    3. There was a mercantile store in Fort Lincoln ca 1863 named Knowles & Green; another in Marmaton named Aiken & Knowles. Both stores were destroyed in raids within two days of each other: 20 Oct 1864 in Fort Lincoln and 22 Oct 1864 in Marmaton. Also Knowles homes were burned in both cases. Col. Horatio Knowles (a Free-Stater, and mem of both KS Legislatures 1859-1861 and County Clerk 1860) was murdered at Marmaton in the raid there, mounted by Courcey and Matthews. I am hoping someone has a connection to the Green and Aiken families who co-owned these two stores. Appreciatively, Ellen Knowles Bisson mailto:thebissons@worldnet.att.net
