Can anyone give me info on the availability of land records for the county during the period from 1855-1865? Where is the best place to start looking. Thanks, Ellen Bisson mailto:thebissons@worldnet.att.net
Thanks, Willi. Do you happen to know whether the Old Fort Genealogical Society (OFGS) has done other cemeteries in earlier years? Are they the only source of cemetery data for Bourbon? When there last spring, we worked really hard to find Xenia, where (or near where) my grandfather and most of his siblings were born, but there didn't seem to be anything resembling a town any more. A road sign, perhaps a couple of tumbledown houses, yet I see FOUR cemeteries for Xenia. And from the USGS map coordinates, they aren't exactly where we found the Xenia roadsign. Any help on this incongruity? Cheers, Ellen mailto:thebissons@worldnet.att.net Wilda Marshall Brown wrote: > > OK, now book is in front of me - here are the 1998 offerings > from OFGS > > ST. I am trying to establish a link between Caroline Babbitt Knowles, who is buried in Mapleton Cemetery (off Route 31) in a plot which was purchased by George Darling. Mr. Darling and his wife Kate Darling are buried next to Caroline: George 1843-1909; Kate 1855-1916. Caroline was the wife of Daniel (orig named David) Knowles, but he is buried in Independence with his parents, my gggrandparents, Caleb and Rachel Knowles). Caroline was born in Lorain, OH 1835 and died 1911. David/Daniel d 1880. Caroline Babbitt Knowles and the Darlings are buried with identical stones, engraved with a unique floral design. Thanks, Ellen Bisson mailto:thebissons@worldnet.att.net
Thanks to Marlene (and Pam Mascher), I've got that nifty list of Bourbon County cemeteries. Now, the big question is...is there any published data available on the cemeteries in Mapleton and Xenia particularly. Curiously, we went to what I thought was the "Mapleton Cemetery" off Route 31, just outside Mapleton's "downtown" but it isn't listed as such. I'm always on the lookout for KNOWLES burials in that area of Bourbon. Cheers and thanks again ladies! According to KS Dept of Health Office of Vital Statistics, their death records file begins July 1, 1911. I need info on a death in Mapleton, Bourbon Co., which occurred in April of 1911. Am I out of luck? Thanks for your help, Ellen Bisson mailto:thebissons@worldnet.att.net
Looking for someone who might have census information for Bourbon Co. for 1875. My greatgrandparents lived in Fort Scott close to that time. Their name was PARWAY - Charles Phillip and Josephine. Their children were Geneva, John, Rose, Mary, and Clarence. The PARWAY name is French and may have been spelled differently. The French spelling is PIROUET, their marriage license is spelled PIRVEST. I have also seen Paraway, Perroway, etc. Thank you. Dorothy in MI

While I am not researching either of the names mentioned, I do recognize the name of Glen Soellner. He was a few years older than me; his parents lived in the 500 block on National Ave. in Ft. Lucy (aka May Lucy) PICKETT b 16 May 1871, Fredonia, KS, married 4 Dec. 1891 Nevada, MO to George W. LOOKINGBILL. Lucy appeared in 1905 census, City of Girard, Crawford Co. KS with husband and children. DID NOT appear in 1910 census, only husband (listed as widower) and boys living together, her daughters were living with Lucy's mother. WHAT HAPPENED TO LUCY? Did she pass away, moved, or what? Can you PLEASE help me find my grandmother. Thank you. Will respond.
I have searched for 11 years now for any evidence that my grandfather existed. Bert Mills was probably from Baxter Springs or Ft. Scott, KS. He married my grandmother, Stella Carroll (marriage not found), who was of Joplin & Pittsburg, KS. My dad (Guy Edward Mills) was born to them 2/14/08 in Oklahoma City, OK (no record of his birth was recorded). Bert supposedly died when dad was a baby. I have searched OK, MO, & KS w/o any luck for a marriage, a death,a census, newspaper article, funeral home record or a cemetery record. There seems to be nothing on Bert Mills. I do know Bert laid the first gas lines into OK (I've even written to oil companies with no luck) and that he had a brother named Charles who supposedly died in the Joplin, MO area in the 1970's . I have also found a note of my mother's saying he died in Denver, no records there either... Any help, ideas, or miracles would be greatly appreciated! Is there anyone in Bourbon Co., KS who could look up an obituary or death certificate for me for Elvira J. (Dwyer) Hill who died in 1887 in Bourbon Co.? She was married to John Wesley Hill. Her daughter, Minnie Mae Hill, was my great grandmother and was born 15 November 1877 in Mapleton, Bourbon Co. She died 29 November 1952 in Kansas City, KS. (Ironically, my daughter was born on what would have been her 101st birthday.) I have been searching for a long time for more information on both this Hill and Dwyer family. Any information or lead would be greatly appreciated.
Looking for information on Jonathan KEARNES (various spellings), b. abt 1852 in Ohio. According to the 1880 census, his parents were from VA. I've been told they moved to Laclede Co., MO. Carrie with her two youngest children went to Oakland, CA, abt 1908. I don't know what happened to her husband, Jonathan, or oldest son, William. Karly, I do not have convenient access to the census, however, I will be ordering it from the LDS in the next few weeks. It might be a month before I could look it up for you. I'll let you know when it is ordered and in. I need to look up Rene Maenhoudt and Alena Baert. Marlene MAENHOUDT STRUBE mbstrube@memphisonline.com Germantown, TN
I am researching my husband's family in Bourbon County. Names are: WILSON (James F., William, James Levi), GUNSAULLUS (Henry, Levi, Dorah) MOSS, (Daniel, Barbara) DAVEE (Willis, James Oscar) ZOOK (Joseph, Catherine) BOOTH (Walter, Grace) and FABRA (Anthony, Julettia). Especially missing information on Anthony Fabra - Grandma said she thought he was buried in Deerfield but that is all we know of him. Hoping to find others looking for the same folks. Does some kind person have access to the 1910 and 1920 Kansas census for Linn and Bourbon counties and could look up the names Updike and Barlow. Specifically, I am trying to determine if my grandfather Karl Barlow, who would have been 14 years old in 1910, was living with his grandparents, Isaac and Rosina Updike during this time period. Thanks for any assistance. Karly (upstate New York) _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com
Marlene-I don't ever remember a Marion community in Bourbon County. There is a town called Marion north of Fort Scott, I believe near Kansas City. Could this possibly be what you are looking for? Connie
