In "Footprints of Bourbon County Families," it appears that Drywood is a township area, not specifically a town in and of itself. It is in the far lower right of the county, bordered on the north by Scott Twp (location of Fort Scott) and on the west by Pawnee. Missouri is on the east. Town of Garland is included in it, but Garland was named Applewood first, Elnor, and Memphis in what was Drywood Twp. It appears that the area includes at least 4 cemeteries: Tweedy; Spence; Custard; and Glor and, I think (if I am reading the map correctly) Pleasant View and Conner. Hope this helps. Contact the Genealogy Society in Cherokee County, they are wonderful people. The county turned most of their records over to them years ago. I'm a bit surpised they didn't send you a flyer with the holdings of the Society, they did that for me a few years ago. The lady in the Labette County Clerk office goes way out of the way to help. But the lady in the probate court won't even check. I have had very good luck with the recorder of deeds in Labette Co. Malinda - I am so sorry you have had this unfortunate experience in Bourbon County. I must tell you that I have had so much luck with the wonderful researchers I've encountered there, the genealogical society, the local courthouse, the funeral homes, etc. etc. - I simply cannot believe someone was so uncaring! Please believe this is an atypical response from the wonderful people of Bourbon County! I am researching my family history. My great grandparents, Frederick Elllsworth Chidester and Ada Mae Lorton were married on Christmas Day 1898 in Ft. Scott, KS. Fred's parents were Isaiah Chidester and Mary Elizabeth Tucker. Ada's parents were Thomas Jefferson Lorton b. 1833- Greene Co. IL d. 1906-Ft. Scott, KS. Tom was the City weighmaster for Ft. Scott. Does any one have any information on my family? Linda
Just want to let you know that the Bourbon County Registrar of Deeds office is on the ball and really helpful which should encourage those of you seeking that information. You can call (316 223-3800) for basic data, but need to write and send a SASE identifying your search inquiry. The address is: Office of Registrar of Deeds - Bourbon County 210 South National Fort Scott, KS 66701 When I called they told me their records are cross-indexed by buyer & seller and date back to KT days. I sent a ck without knowing exactly how much I'd get in return, but they refunded a $1 and sent me 8 pgs (dbl sided) @$3 a page. Perhaps a bit higher than some offices, but I got it back within DAYS! Wouldn't it be nice if all of our searches were that painless! Regards, Ellen Bisson mailto:thebissons@worldnet.att.net
I've checked my Rand McNally and the USGS GNIS site. Am I correct in assuming that refs to Lincoln and Fort Lincoln mean the historical location abt midway between Mapleton and Fulton? Was there actually a fort there, either during the CW or as an Indian outlook? Does anyone know what type of settlement was there ca 1858-1860ish? And, just to clarify, I know there is a Lincoln County in north central KS, but my search if for the Bourbon County Lincoln community. Kind regards and thanks, Ellen Bisson mailto:thebissons@worldnet.att.net
Would like to correspond with anyone who is either researching or aquatinted with the KARLESKINT (KARLESKIND/CARLESKINT) family of Fort Scott, Bourbon County, KS. I have a female ancestor (Barbara BEECHWOOD) who married into the family, and I have reason to believe the two families originated from the same town in Germany. The KARLESKINTs came to Fort Scott, KS from West Turin, Lewis Co., NY about 1860. There are still KARLESKINTs in Montgomery County, KS today. If you have any information on either of these families, I'd love to hear from you! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Niki (Beechwood) Curry niki.curry@bain.com Researching in Neosho County, KS (1865-1909): BEECHWOOD, BELL, BLAISE, CAVANAUGH, DUMAS, SAUNDERS, Researching in Montgomery County, KS (1909-1940): BEECHWOOD Researching in Bourbon County, KS (1860 - present): KARLESKINT or CARLESKIND
Hi everyone! My query is a little different here - but I'm at a loss to find descendants of my ancestors who resided in Bourbon Co. There simply MUST be some descendants around of the STOELK (STULK) and/or KLOCKSIEM (KLOCKSON) families who immigrated to Bourbon Co. circa 1872 - my grandmother, Maria Martha KLOCKSIEM GUNSAULLUS was born in Bourbon County, Dec. 12, 1881 - she had two brothers and a siister, Sophia, Heinz (Henry) and Fred who were all born in Germany. I have been unable to trace any descendants of this family - as a strange commentary on the fruitlessness of my search, I have found more info on this family in Germany than I have found in the U. S. Surely there must be some descendants of these siblings of my Maria Martha out there somewhere - family oral history indicates that due to anti-German sentiment, their true ancestry was hidden or at least kept secret - but I would love to hear from others who may have had German or other Eastern European-born ancestors who settled in Bourbon Co. in this time frame. Sorry to be so wordy - just on a roll tonight! Willi
Ellen, Thank you so much for listing all the known cemeteries in Bourbon Co. I have just begun my research in Bourbon Co., and your info should help. Are you from this area? If so, would you know the best library in the county or surrounding counties that might have access to cemetery books, as well as other helpful research material? Hope to do some research traveling this spring to KS and MO, and don't know exactly where to find my best resources. Thank you very much. Kirsten PLAINO4@aol.com

Since the subject of Bourbon Co. cemeterys have come up, I will again make an offer to lookup for anyone, names that are in the Clarksburg Cemetery book issued by the OFGS. I found dozens of my ancestors in it, but of course, they lived in that area. Karla dolly@thegrid.net
Hi all: Is it possible that the cemeteries listed could be larger family cemeteries located on farms, etc. I know that here in Tennessee there is a lot of my family (3 genereations + back) in an old family cemetery. The farm land long ago sold, but with the stipulation that the cemetery be left as is. My older family members cleaned the cemetery up and started a trust fund to repair broken stones and maintain the cemetery. Maybe an older member of the community could direct you? or a local historian? You never know, some adventuresome youths could even be of assistance. There is an old family cemetery located about a mile from my parent's home that we stumbled across while tromping through the woods and farmland one day. Hope I've helped. I'll stop rambling now. I wasn't sure about posting this info, but since I'm not the only one interested and there are others like me who are not as familiar with the county as we'd like to be...I'll go ahead. Below is an alphabetical listing by town of the cemeteries in Bourbon County. The info is from the USGS GNIS survey of the county. There could well be cemeteries which do not appear on this list...blame the USGS, not me. Obviously, many of the little old family plots may not be included. USGS provides latitude/longitude coordinates and a map locating the cemetery with reasonable clarity--route numbers aren't marked though so you have to get a good KS map to be more successful. The URL for the Bourbon County site is: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/bourbon/index.html#County click on the link titled "Cemeteries in Bourbon County." You can click on any of the cemeteries listed to bring up the geographic description of it; you will also see a highlighted "Show Feature Location," which gets you a map that can be zoomed in/out for better identification. Hello Ellen and other fellow Kansas researchers: Yes, it is nice to see activity on the list. Ellen, if you are out in the cemetery and you happen to see a Maenhoudt let me know. My great grandfather Rene Maenhoudt had more than one child that died very young. I'm not sure where they are all buried. They lived on a farm between Mapleton and Uniontown. Also in the populated area called Marion (in Bourbon county). I'm having trouble locating his immigration papers. Kansas City region archives doesn't have them, neither does New York (Ellis Island). He went to reapply at Fort Scott later on (after WWI) as he had been out of the country over 90 days. When they took off his travel time to New York before leaving the USA it was only 88 days. Any suggestions, anyone? I'm preparing to write Bourbon County records. I'm hoping there is a trail that I can attempt to follow. I believe he got his papers through Ellis Island 1905-1907. Now, the big question is...is there any published data available on the cemeteries in Mapleton and Xenia particularly. Curiously, we went to what I thought was the "Mapleton Cemetery" off Route 31, just outside Mapleton's "downtown" but it isn't listed as such. I'm always on the lookout for KNOWLES burials in that area of Bourbon. Cheers and thanks again ladies! Hello List, I am looking for any information on JOEL P. JACKSON. He was living in Jasper Co., MO at the time of the civil war. When the fighting became too close, he took his family and sought refuge at FT. SCOTT, KS. I do not know if he fought or not, but he died @ 1864.
