Dee, Sadie Williams was born 25 Oct. 1872 Beginning in June 1922 owned and operated a grocery store at Oak and Broadway in Ft. Scott KS for 27 years. She was married to Jesse William Riley in 1892 Ft. Scott, Bourbon Co. Jesse W. "Chick" Riley owned and operated a barber shop for 50 years at 618 East Wall St., Fort Scott, Kansas. The shop was often used as the West Third voting precinct. "Chick" consistently served as an election judge down through the years. (from Obit. Fort Scott, Tribune August 1950) Sadie always called him "Will". They lived at 203 N. Little St., Fort Scott, Kansas. I believe Sadie was from Madison Wis. Williams is a collateral line, but I have a little more on the Williams if it would be helpful to you, or someone else on the list. Jeanne (Reed) Gaylord

I was interested to read this article because my grandfather, Sam Rudkin, at one time co-owned and co-operated the barber shop in the Goodlander Hotel. According to my uncle Don Rudkin, Sam and his partner a Mr. Rutledge were in business as Rutledge & Rudkin sometime before World War I, but probably after 1901 when Mr. Letton is said in the article to have left Ft. Scott. Sam eventually bought Rutledge out, but around 1917 sold the business in the Goodlander and moved to one on Main St. Eventually in about 1926 my grandfather Sam bought the National Hotel, to which he added a restaurant and he also ran a barber shop in the hotel. My father lived with his family in the National Hotel from the time he was 3 yrs old until he went off to the Army in WW II. Sam owned and ran the hotel until 1945. --Tom Rudkin -----Original Message----- From: Bill or Elayne <wttet@ptd.net> To: KSBOURBO-L@rootsweb.com <KSBOURBO-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, February 22, 1999 5:03 PM Subject: [KSBOURBO-L] LETTON/WRIGHT WEDDING >Dec 23, 1941 Fort Scott Tribune: > >J.F. I have a copy of the Cemetery Inscriptions Vol 1 of Evergreen/Pine Lawn Cemeteries from Fort Scott, and a typewritten listing of burials in West Liberty Cemetery of Bourbon Co. The Evergreen/Pine Lawn book is available for purchase from the Old Fort Gen. Society. I would be happy to do look-ups in the book, however, or the West Liberty Cemetery records. Does anyone on this list know of the best resources in the Fort Scott area to obtain information from old city directories, newspapers, cemetery indexes, etc. Preferably something fast and inexpensive, not a paid researcher. Does anyone on this list have access to Fort Scott resources that is willing to do lookups if name, place, dates, are known? If so, could you post the resources you have access to on the list? My mom has a few books, I'm not sure what they are and if they would be helpful. As soon as I get to see her, I'll post anything that might be helpful with an offer to do lookups. I know she has a cemetery index, but don't remember if it is Fort Scott or Bartlesville, OK. Thanks Elayne

>From the Fort Scott Monitor, May 19, 1909 John Manning, who has been in the insane ward of the jail for weeks and weeks, disturbing a whole block about every hour of the day is a free man. Judge Russell paroled him today and he left town at once, going to Kansas City, where he says he will stay. last night Manning got on a tantrum, in fact, about every evening he has been delivering a short lecture on virtue, chastity, and a few other subjects of which he is scant and found wanting. The language he used last night was something dreadful. He yelled in such a manner that he could be heard a whole block. Manning knows the best people in town and the way he painted some of them last night was a sight. He would get up in the north window, take out the panes of glass and begin to buz and everyone within a block could hear him. It is a common nuisance, this manner of keeping insane persons where their blackguard disturbs a whole block. Some of the....................(rest of article missing on page I copied.) Elayne

Some of my ancestors lived in that general area and many of them are buried at Clarksburg Cemetary near Garland. I have the cemetary book for Clarksburg published by the Old Fort Genealogical Society and I checked for Joel Perry Jackson and he is not listed. There was a mercantile store in Fort Lincoln ca 1863 named Knowles & Green; another in Marmaton named Aiken & Knowles. Both stores were destroyed in raids within two days of each other: 20 Oct 1864 in Fort Lincoln and 22 Oct 1864 in Marmaton. Also Knowles homes were burned in both cases. Col. Horatio Knowles (a Free-Stater, and mem of both KS Legislatures 1859-1861 and County Clerk 1860) was murdered at Marmaton in the raid there, mounted by Courcey and Matthews. I am hoping someone has a connection to the Green and Aiken families who co-owned these two stores. Appreciatively, Ellen Knowles Bisson mailto:thebissons@worldnet.att.net
