Hi, It is very nice to see life from the Railroads mailing list. It has been very quiet for a very long time. --- Regards, Rebekah A. I am researching background information on my grandfather, Charles Sumner, who we believe was a telegraph operator for the railroad around 1918 in Kansas & Missouri. Some of the towns he worked and lived in were Horton, KS, Maple Hill and Willard, KS and Toronto, MO. He was born in Miami, KS about 1883. If anyone has any information, please contact me. Thank you, Steve Sumner

I am trying to find information on my grandfather, Everett C. Carrothers, who worked for the ATSF/Santa Fe Railroad from the mid 1920s until his death in 1964. He was 65 yrs old when he died and lived in Emporia at the time. He was born in Mulvane in 1898. He was a fireman, then an engineer. His runs were to Ark City and Wellington in the latter years. I am trying to locate someone who might have known him (though I realize anyone his age would no longer be alive, thought maybe someone younger who worked with him could still be). Also trying to find information on a boarding or rooming house that he would have stayed at when he was there. Any suggestions to help me in my research would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! One of the most interesting items in the annual report of the Inter-State commerce commission is that relating to railway accidents. From this it appears that during the past year in the United States, 1,972 employes (sic) were killed and 20,028 injured. These casualties are as numerous as those of a great battle, and the worst of it is that by far the greater number of them are probably preventable. When the devastation of a Gettysburg occurs every year in the ranks of men engaged in but one line of work it would seem to be time for congress to devise methods looking to the correction of the evil. Doubtless decent precautions by railway managers and a small expenditure of money would reduce this roll of slaughter materially. It reaches all important places in Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico &c. passes through all our principal cities and opens up to settlers all our fertile valleys. Accident on the Gulf Road. Paola, Kan., August 23.--A fatal collision occurred on the Gulf road, two miles north of Paola. Freight train No. 31, south bound, broke in two, and the south bound passenger on the M. K. & T., which uses the Gulf tracks between Kansas City and Paola, was flagged and stopped just above it. Section 2 of freight 31 followed close behind and was flagged; but was running fast on a down grade and could not stop, crashing into the rear of the passenger and instantly killing Pullman Conductor Z. M. CAMP, of Kansas City. A freight engineer was also injured about the back. Two engines and coaches were badly smashed. The coroner's jury returned a verdict of unavoidable accident. "Great Demand for the New Maps." Topeka, March 14.--The new railroad maps have been received by the board of railroad commissioners from the Buffalo publishers. The map is the handsomest, most distinct and complete yet published by the board. The demand for the map is unprecedented. As but 7,500 copies are printed, all cannot be supplied who want them, but as long as the supply lasts, no favors will be shown to any one. WAGGENER, of Atchison, did some tall traveling on legal business. He had a case to look after in the supreme court of Nebraska, at Lincoln, in the morning, and another case in one of the courts at Topeka the same forenoon. He took a special train of his own, a Missouri Pacific engine and Pullman coach, and after disposing of the case at Lincoln, made the run to Topeka on a lightning schedule, arriving here a little after 11 o'clock, in time to attend to his client's interests.
