The La Cygne Weekly Journal Linn County Saturday October 11, 1879 The body of a very young infant was found, about noon, by two young boys, Charley FUNK and Freddie PLATTS, in the Marais des Cygnes river, near the grist mill, this city. An inquest was subsequently held, the same day, before J.V. DONALDSON, justice of the peace, who acted as Coroner. The following jurors were summoned: J.P. WAY, W.H. JUDSON, J.C. BRYSON, H.F. HAMLIN, A.L. MICHAELS and William MILLER. Dr. R.G. MNDENHALL viewed the corpse and pronounced it that of a colored baby. The jury also viewed the remains, after which they were buried. The discovery is the undoubted revelation of a crime, and before returning a verdict, the Coroner's jury will wait for evidence to show who the perpetrators or participants in the affair may be.
