    3. The La Cygne Weekly Journal Linn County Saturday June 29, 1878 Last Sunday died at the age of 71, our old friend and neighbor, Hopkins CARPENTER, sen., after a long illness. Mr. Carpenter settled here in 1859, coming from near Peoria, Ill. He was born at Dayton, Ohio, and after having learned his trade as carpenter went to Natchez, Miss. After some time he removed to the wilds of Louisana and occupied his time farming and hunting. His stories of his exploits with bear, deer, panther, allligators, et id omne genus, were very entertaining. From Louisana he removed to Illinois, and thence here. He was an honest upright man, and will be a loss to the neighborhood. He leaves a widow and eleven children.
