    3. The La Cygne Weekly Journal Linn County Saturday June 15, 1878 W.A. MITCHELL, secretary of La Cygne Hook and Ladder Company, No. 1, has been corresponding with John CORSCOT, city clerk of Madison, Wis., in regard to the purchase of "Mendota No. 1," a fire engine formerly used in Madison, but which has now been cast aside for increased facilities to fight fire. "Mendota No.1" can be bought for $600. It cost $2,200 when new. Corscott writes that the old firemen all say it is now as good as it ever was. From a personal knowledge of the engine we feel safe in saying that it is just what is needed in La Cygne. It works by hand, has 600 feet of hose and throws three streams of water. It is undoubtedly a rare bargain. The fire company here talk of raising a stock company, issued 125 shares at $5 each and buying the machine. No difficulty should be experienced in disposing of the stock.
