    1. [KS-OLD-NEWSPAPERS] Sad Accident: Death: James HAMMOND
    2. Jim Laird
    3. The Oskaloosa Independent Jefferson County Saturday August 5, 1876 A sad accident happened last Sunday morning, resulting in the death of James HAMMOND at his residence five or six miles north of the Falls. The evening before, Mr. Hammond attempted to shoot a hawk with his gun, but it only snapped and would not go off. Sunday morning the hawk made it appearance again, and as a number of the family were going out to the cow yard to milk, they heard him remark he was going to try his gun again on that hawk. Shortly after this a report of a cap was heard, and a second or so afterwards, the report of a gun. It is supposed that Mr. Hammond attempted to shoot his gun off, but that the load hung fire, and in bringing it down to the ground it exploded, the ball striking Mr. Hammond in the right temple, and lodging in his brain, causing immediate death. The sad accident has cast a gloom over the neighborhood where it happened. Mr. Hammond was a young man well thought of and it was only on Sunday two weeks before that the was married to Miss Phoebe GLEMM(?). Valley Falls.

    2. Jim Laird
    3. The Oskaloosa Independent Jefferson County Saturday July 8, 1876 The sickness and death of Mrs. Wm. POSEY was peculiarly sad. She was a daughter of Mr. Samuel STRAWN. The funeral was very large. The order of Patrons of Husbandry performed the burial ceremonies. The discourse delivered by Dr. Wilson. "As thy days thy strength shall be" was very fine. It did all good that heard it. The bereft husband and children have the sympathies of the entire community. Almost every household has been afflicted in this community. Almost every home has been robbed of a member, so their sympathies are deep and heartfelt.(Valley Falls Reporter, July 5, 1876.)

    1. [KS-OLD-NEWSPAPERS] Horrible Massacre.
    2. Jim Laird
    3. The Oskaloosa Independent Jefferson County Saturday July 8, 1876 Horrible Massacre. On the 25th of last month, on the Big Horn river, in Montana, General Custer, with a few hundred troops, attacked an overwhelming force of Sioux Indians, under the command of Sitting Bull. The result was the most fearful massacre of the present century. The Indians stood their ground and being well armed, poured in a murderous fire upon the soldiers. Gen. Custer, his brother, his nephew, and fifteen other commissioned officers, together, with about 300 privates were slaughtered, the whole force being cut to pieces. Reno's command, which had attacked the village from the other side, came near sharing the same fate, but were saved by the arrival of reinforcements, when the Indians retired. It's a dreadful affair, and has startled the nation. It is, to be hoped, that it will result in some good by calling attention to the fact that 20,000 brave, well-equipped and armed indians are not to be trifled with when it their mountain fastnesses.
