    1. [KS-OLD-NEWSPAPERS] Death: Mrs. C.K. SMITH
    2. Jim Laird
    3. The Colby Free Press Thomas County Thursday April 1, 1915 On last Saturday Mrs. C.K. SMITH, wo had been quite low for several days, peacefully passed away at her home in the east part of the city. The funeral was held from the M.E. church on Sunday afternoon at three and the remains, followed by a large concourse of friends, were laid away in the Colby cemetery. Mrs. Smith was one of the early settlers here coming with her husband and family and settling on the homestead in the early days of pioneering here. Some years later they moved to Colby and have lived her since. Mrs. Smith was one of those kindly, clever women who endeared herself to a large circle of friends and because of her good heart and consideration for others never gave offense to any one. The last six or eight years her mind failed her and all during that time she was tenderly cared for and nursed by her husband, who has done little else but look after her wants. She was born in Ohio in 1845 and had she lived until June would have been seventy years of age. She leaves a husband and three sons and many friends who will cherish for her the ever green plant of sweet remembrance.

    2. Jim Laird
    3. The Topeka Daily State Journal Thurday August 7, 1919 Cost $1.50 An Hour. Electrical Labor Rises Since Settlement of Price. Electrical labor costs the consumer $1.50 an hour since the settlement of the electrician's union strick Monday. Before that time the same labor cost the consumer $1.35 an hour. The electrician's local, No. 226, went on strike last Friday alleging that the local association of electrical contractors wished to insert an objectionable stipulation in a new contract with the union. This stipulation was alleged to provide that the electricians would refuse to work on any jobs which were not being done by the members of the contractors' association and that they would refuse to install wiring or fixtures not furnished by members of the contractors' association. The contractors' association, thru H.S. Lee, secretary, denied that this stipulation had been offered the strikers as one of the terms of the new contract. The strike was settled Monday morning, when the union men returned to work. The new contract with the union gave the men an increase in pay of 17 1/2 cents an hour. The old scale was 70 cents an hour and the new scale is 87 1/2 cents an hour.
