    1. [KS-OLD-NEWSPAPERS] Article: A Serious Affair: January 26, 1878
    2. Jim Laird
    3. The La Cygne Weekly Journal Linn County Saturday January 26, 1878 At about 11:30 o'clock on Thursday morning a serious affair occurred on Broadway, this city. For several weeks C.S. LOVELL has had a barber shop in one corner of C. JACOBS' shoe store. It is stated that he rented the room for a year. He has been dissatified with his location and has wanted to leave town for some time, but has been prevented from doing so on account of his contract for the room occupied. It is claimed that Lovell has reciepts to show that his rent is paid until some time in February. On Thursday morning it transpired that he has sold the fixtures of his barber shop to a Mr. PARKER, giving him a bill of sale for the property. As near as we can get the facts in the case he either informed Mr. Jacobs or his sons that he was going to remove the property, or they discovered the fact. At any rate they knew what was going on, and when the dray came up for Parker to take his goods away on, Robert E. JACOBS, the son of C.JACOBS in the employ of Jones & Slater, went to the door of the barber shop, and holding a cocked revolver in his hand, forbade Lovell to move his property under penalty of shooting him. Lovell made a motion to go on with his work and Jacobs prepared to shoot. He was caught by the arms, however, and of the two shots discharged from the weapon in Jacobs' hand, one took effect in a sash of the shop and the other the sidewalk. Young Jacobs was immediately arrested and taken before Esquire DONALDSON, who bound him in the sum of five hundred dollars to appear at 2 o'clock yesterday (Friday) to answer a charge of "unlawfully and feloniously shooting with intent to kill or maim."

Mr. Gliem was in his eightieth year, and had lived on his farm near Arrington over forty-five years. He divided his time with his children, and had left the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.B. The funeral was held from the home of John Gliem Thursday, with services at the Congregational church at Muscotah and interment in the Muscotah cemetery. The death of Fredinand Gliem March 8 made his father hier to an estate valued at $10,000 or more. It will be recalled that some of the children feared undue influence would be brought to bear upon the old gentleman, causing him to give his property away, and proceedings were brought April 1 to have him declared insane. The trail was held April 12, when Matthew Gliem gave such evidence of a sane mind that the insanity charge was dismissed.--Atchison Globe.

    1. [KS-OLD-NEWSPAPERS] Around the Court House: June 2, 1910
    2. Jim Laird
    3. The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday June 2, 1910 Around the Court House. Marriage license was issued this week to John C. PUDERBAUGH and Mystie HANEY of Ozawkie. William F. COFFMAN, the delinquent boy that was paroled by the juvenile court about a month ago, was in Saturday with his mother to report to the judge. Mrs. Coffman says that Willie has a been much better boy since he was up before the judge and that she thinks that he will be all right from now on. Frank BLUMENTHAL, otherwise known as "Frank, the warbler," who was arrested last week at North Cedar for "tapping the till" at the telephone office at Valley Falls, is to be returned to the Ohio Reform School at Toledo. After Frank had been arrested he requested the officers to notify the school and said that he had been paroled from this institution some time ago. County Attorney WORSWICK notified them and received word Wednesday that they would send a man after him. On October 6th, 1889, in the town of Bigelow, Mo., Minnie HICKMAN, of Meriden, alleges she was married to Oscar Hickman; but it would seem from the petition filed in the district court this week, her dream of love was not of long duration. She alleges that her spouse is anything but what a loving husband should be, and that in October 1909 he left her and said he was never coming back; that at this time she bought his interest in their household goods and since then she has not seen him--does not know where he is, whereupon she prays the court to grant her a divorce and the custody of their two living children, which undoubtedly the court will do at the coming term.

    1. [KS-OLD-NEWSPAPERS] Shot Him Three Times: BLOOMBERG, BOLEJACK
    2. Jim Laird
    3. The Wasington Republican-Register Washington County Friday September 29, 1905 Shot Him Three Times. Eric Bloomberg Settles a Dispute in Regard to Some Hay. Washington County is apt to have another trial on its hands for murder. It all depends whether or not the shots which Eric BLOOMBERG is alleged to have taken at Joseph BOLEJACK result in death. Last week on Wednesday Mr. Bolejack cut some tall grass along the road because the children were complaining about it on their way to school. He had it piled up and the next day when he went to haul it in he found that one load had already disappeared and that a neighbor, Eric Bloomberg was there with his wagon loading on another. Bolejack says that he ordered him to leave the hay alone as he had cut it himself for his own use, and that Bloomberg not only refused to pay any attention to his request, but that he called him an unprintable name and pulled out a revolver and fired at him. One shot took effect in the thigh, another in the arm and one somewhere near the shoulder. Mrs. Bolejack arrived on the scene at this time and Bloomberg put up his weapon. The family of Mr. Bloomberg were also on a hay rack near by. Mr. Bloomberg in now lying in jail awaiting trial. In may go hard on him unless Mr. Bolejack recovers. At last reports he was lying very low. This shooting is probably the result of a feud that has prevailed in this neighborhood for quite a number of years. Mr. Bloomberg has had a case of some kind in court against some of his neighbors for the last four or five terms.

    3. The Harper Advocate Harper County Thursday September 29, 1921 Birthday Surprise. On Friday, September 23, Mrs. J. L. POUNDSTONE, living northwest of Harper, having reached the 69 milestone in life, was given a very pleasant surprise by members of the Royal Neighbor Camp of Anthony. At the noon hour, a dray load of these neighbors drove in the yard, unloaded, and took possession. As is their custom, they came with well filled baskets and, such a feast. Few of the good things that make up a good dinner had been omitted. The surprise was complete, but none, the less enjoyed. The entire afternoon was spent in a social session. Mr. Edmandson, the driver, ate dinner with us to save Mr. Poundstone the embarrassment of eating alone with so many women. A beautiful boquet of flowers were given Mrs. Poundstone in honor of the occasion. At 7:30 Mr. Edmandson called for the ladies and a happy crowd they were. The kind sweet feeling, the atomsphere of a true fraturnal spirit, made it a day long to be remembered, and as we clasped hand at parting, we felt it indeed a day well spent. A Guest.
