The La Cygne Weekly Journal Linn County Saturday June 8, 1878 Miss Lucy TAFT was accidentally drowned while bathing in Middle Creek, near the residence of J.M. DAY, Liberty township, this county, last Saturday. Two of Mr. Day's daughters were with her at the time. She ventured in too deep water and was strangled before held could reach her. She was 17 years of age, a music teacher of rare accomplishments, a favorite and friend of all who knew her. The parents of Miss Taft reside in Centerville township. She was buried in Oakwood, this county, on Sunday. Her sudden death is mourned by many.

WICKART, of Franklin county, Kansas, and Mrs. Sarah A. PRISER, of La Cygne. Mrs. Priser has been a resident of La Cygne from its beginning in 1869. Public spirited, kind hearted, a worker in every good enterprise, we congratulate the fortunate gentleman on his success in gaining the life companionship of such a woman.

The La Cygne Weekly Journal Linn County Saturday April 13, 1878 Mound City has a military company. The Clarion furnishes the names of the officers and other information as follows: "First Lieutenant, R.B. BRYAN; First Sergeant, Theo. BOTKIN; Secnond Sergeant, G.W. COUTS; Third Sergeant, George W. JONES; Fourth Sergeant, W.W. AUSTIN; First Corporal, Will VERTEES; Second Corporal, Dolph BALDWIN; Third Corporal, I.N. DOW; Fourth Corporal, Frank MORRISON. The necessary returns have been made to the Governor of the State, and as soon as the commission of the commanding officer is received and he is regularly mustered, application will be made to the Governor for arms. He agreed to furnish the improved needle gun."

The Harper Advocate Harper County Thursday November 17, 1921 The funeral of Mrs. Jennie Maud HOPKINS wife of Ben Hopkins of Castleton, Kansas, was held Thursday afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. J.C. Fisher, officiating. Mrs. Hopkins died at her home at Castleton on November 15 and was brought here for burial in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
The Harper Advocate Harper County Thursday November 17, 1921 Angel Of Death Takes Early County Settler. Almarion Haskins Dies at His Home in Harper, November 13--Funeral Monday. Almarion HASKINS was born in Canada, July 15th, 1846 and passed away at his home in Harper, Kans., November 13th, 1921, age 75 years, 8 months, 28 days. When he was 18 years of age he came to the United States and 36 years ago he came to Harper County, Kansas. He settled near Crystal Springs where he remained until 15 years ago, when he moved to Harper. He was the father of five children, four of whom are living at the present time, Urwin A., Eva May McDOWELL, Roscoe of Harper, and Purley HALSTEAD of Wichita. On the 24th day of November 1903 he was married to Mrs. Louise PEARL. Mr. Haskins was a man of strong constitution and has been a hard worker all his life. He has been prosperous and provided well for his family. He united with the church years ago and has been very active in all the activities of the church. He was the teacher of the Men's Bible Class and always present. He taught his class the last Sunday before his illness. He was faithful to the end and there is layed up for him a crown of life. He leaves to mourn his loss a devoted wife, four children, 3 step-children, 20 grandchildren, and a host of friends. He will be greatly missed in the community and especially in the church, where he has been such a worker. The sympathy of the church is extended to the family in this their great loss.
The Harper Advocate Harper County Thursday November 17, 1921 James R. SEAMAN, deceased was born at Midway, Kansas, February 14, 1883 and died November 8, 1921, aged 38 years, 8 months and 24 days. He leaves to mourn his departure, two sisters, Mary DOOLEY of Colorado and Mrs. Mary BRILL of Joplin, Mo., and one brother, M.A. Seaman of Harper, with whom he made his home. Funeral services were conducted by H. LeRoy Goodwin at the Baptist church, Friday, November 11 at 2 o'clock. Although Mr. Seaman had lived in Harpre only a short time, he leaves many friends to mourn his decease.

Mrs. Mary Ann WOLF died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kate DeMOTT at Harper, Kansas, after an illness of several months, Wednesday morning at 2:45 at the age of 74 years, and 19 days. Mary Ann WERLING was born in Bavaria, Germany, October 21, 1847 and came to the United States with her parents in 1848 and settled in Peru, Ills., and in 1867 was married to Karl Martin Wolf at Mt. Palenstine, Ills., and to this union, five children were born: Mrs. John DeMOTT, Harper, Kansas; Mrs. B.B. McCORMACK, Sunny Dale, Kansas; Mrs. Frank WHITMORE, Prague, Okla.; Mr. Martin F. WOLF, Wichita, Kansas, and Mrs W.B. WILLIAMS, Kansas City, Mo., besides those, she leaves eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth WEBER, Lostant, Ill., two brothers, Louis and Joseph Werling of Fairbury, Ills., and a host of friends. Services were conducted at Undertaking Parlor at 2:45, Thursday, Rev. Jesse C. Fisher, officiating. The ladies quartet of the Methodist church rendered several beautiful hymns. The body was taken to her old home at Valley Center, where the remains were laid to rest.

According to the Enid Daily News, Miss Ethel GENSMAN is dead and Miss Winifred MAJOR was badly bruised when they were struck by an automobile drivenby Kenneth PARKER, son of John G. Parker, last Saturday evening. According to the news the girls just stepped out upon the pavement, when they were struck by the car. "Blinded by the glare of lights of approaching automobiles, young Parker declares he did not see the girls who were crossing the Madison intersection. Parker was driving north on Madison and cars coming from both ways on Main made a glare he was unable to see through, it was said."

The La Cygne Weekly Journal Linn County Saturday February 2, 1878 The Journal regrets to announce the death, in this city, on Wednesday morning, of little Susie DONLEY, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.V. Donley, at the age of four years and six months. Her demise was occasioned by a severe attack of membraneous croup. She was buried Thursday. Her brother Harry has been very ill with the same disease, but at last accounts was improving. In their bereavement the afflicted parents have the assistance of many kind friends and possess the sympathy of all.
The Washington Republican-Register Washington County Friday October 6, 1905 Haddam. Mr. REED, an aged and respected citizen, who lived just over the line Republican county, died of kidney trouble Tuesday morning. Mr. Reed is an old settler, having settled here over thirty years ago, and leaves a host of friends and neighbors to mourn his death.
