The Washington Register Washington County Thursday August 25, 1904 Mr. John Cooney. Another old soldier has answered to the last roll call. Mr. John COONEY whom we mentioned in last week's Index as being seriously ill, passed over the river, August 16, 1904, after a sickness of several weeks. Mr. Cooney was one of the old residents of Palmer having come here when the town was new. He has made his home here since that time and leaves many relatives and old friends. Mr. John Cooney was born in Hunting county, Penn., April 23, 1826, and died at Palmer August 16, 1904. In the early part of his life he moved to Iowa and in 1867 he moved from North Liberty, Ia., to Kansas. Was twice united in marriage, his first wife, being Miss Mary ROBINSON, to which union there were born eight children, seven of whom survive him, the only one living here, however, John Cooney, Jr., south of Palmer. He was married at second time to Mrs. S.M. HILEMAN on March 10, 1870. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the M.E. church conducted by Rev. Weidenheimer and the Grand Army of Linn of which he was a member. The remains were laid to rest in Peach Creek cemetery where lie nearly a score of the nation's brave defenders.--Palmer Index.
The Washington Register Washington County Thursday August 25, 1904 Mrs. Geo. R. LEE Eliza V. BRUNDYDGE was born near Ithica, Thompkins county, New York, on the 9th day of July, 1829. She was married twice, the last time to Geo. R. LEE, in 1862. She came from Michigan to Kansas in 1870 where she has lived ever since. She died Monday, August 15, 1904, at the age of 75 years, 1 month and 6 days, and leaves a husband and five children to mourn her loss. The funeral services were held at the Parallel Presbyterian church and the remains interred in the Parallel cemetery Monday.--Palmer Index.
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank MARTIN died Thursday at the age of one week and was buried Friday afternoon in the Denison cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.N. Brown at the house. (Denison.)
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 Enda Pearl Allen BROWN died Friday morning, Dec. 16, at her home in Denison, aged 19 years, 11 months and 28 days. Her mother died soon after Pearl's birth and she lived with her grandmother, Mrs. BALES until the death of Mr. Bales on Feb. 10, 1910. She was married to William Brown and an infant son survives her. She united with the Christian church soon after her marriage and continued a consistent member until her death which took place after an illness of four weeks. Funeral services were conducted Saturday in the Christian church by her pastor, John Hopkins. Burial was made in the Denison cemetery.
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 Sudden Death of Gene Allen. Tuesday morning early Gene ALLEN was found dead in the home of his brother, Samuel Allen, in this city, where he had called the afternoon before. He was lying in the hall at the foot of the stairs where he had lain all night with his clothes on, dead and cold. It was known that he was there early the evening, before, in a stupor, but it was supposed that he would soon sleep it off and go home, or take care of himself. Dr. Lowry was called and after viewing the body called an inquest in the afternoon. County Attorney WORSWICK accompanied by Sheriff RILEY, came over from Oskaloosa to conduct the inquiry. After the examination of half a dozen witnesses the jury, composed of Neil McLEOD, Will ONEAL, H.H. MITCHELL, Elmer LEWIS, J.E. TUTT and Sam CONNELL, found that death was caused by heart failure. James Eugene Allen, one of ten children born to Ricahrd and Malinda Allen, was born June 29, 1868 on a farm on Brush Creek east of Valley Falls, and died in that city December 19, 1910, aged 42 years, 5 months and 20 days. Gene was never married. Valley Falls has always been his home. He is survived by his aged mother, four brothers, LIvy, Chris, Samuel and Ebert, and two sisters, Mrs. Bud HOGAN and Mrs. Albert ROSE. The funeral was held from the home of his brother Samuel Thursday at 10 o'clock, Rev. H.R. Murphy officiating the services. The burial wa in Farrar Cemetery.
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 Hurt In A Runaway. As they were driving home in their surrey late Saturday afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Guy McFARLAND were injured in a runaway. They were taken immediately to Dr. M.F. MARKS' office for treatment. Mrs. McFarland escaped with slight scratches and bruises, but Guy was hurt about the eye and so stunned by the blow that he was not himself for a day or two. The team, one of that a little high spirited, frightened when Clarence STAFFORD in a lumber wagon drove rapidly around McFarlands, whose team starting to run upset their surrey and dragging it along for a few yards with the occupants helpless within, pulled the tongue out of the clips, and ran across the bridge where they were caught by Parker LEWIS, who with Clayte BURKERT was driving in from the north, and brought to town. Beech CHAPMAN assisted Guy and his wife, out of the rig, straightened it up, gathered up and cared for the their several scattered packages. After treatment and they were able to travel, Jess GLASSELL took Mr. and Mrs. McFarland home in his carriage. Guy is now alright.
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 Death of Mell Hefty. After a very brief illness Mell HEFTY aged 53 years died suddenly at his home at Half Mound Tuesday afternoon. The cause of his death was heart failure due to pneumonia. He attended the funeral of Mrs. Freeland last Friday but went home with a chill. Sunday a physician was called, when it was found that his condition was serious. Mr. Hefty was a prominent farmer an stockman on Coal Creek, where he had lived for over thirty years, a leader in church and best civic life. The funeral will be held from the Coal Creek Evangelical church Friday at one o'clock, Rev. Berhinger officiating. The burial will be in the cemetery nearby.
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 Julia Anna COOK was born in Paltte county, Mo., Augut 21, 1847, and died six miles north of Valley Falls, Tuesday, December 13, 1910, aged 63 years, 3 months and 22 days. With her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John COOK, Julia moved to Leavenworth county, Kansas, in 1854, where her mother died three years later. In Leavenworth county, Feburary 25, 1868 Julia Anna Cook was united in marriage to Joshua FREELAND of Valley Falls. To this union wer born four children, two daughters, Mrs. Sarah GLENN, of Toepka and Mrs. Katie SUMMERFELT, of Texas, and two sons, Edward R. and John J. FREELAND of Valley Falls, who with the bereaved father, survive mother, besides fourteen grandchildren, two brothers, and five sisters, namely: Robt. and Frank COOK, Mrs. Joe RASWELL and Mrs. Warren WOODSON, of Leavenworth, Mrs. Donnie MYERS, of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Robert BAKER, of Wichita, and Mrs. Henry BOWERS of Leavenworth. In 1867 Julia united with the Baptist church, but as it was not convenient to attend the church of her first choice, Mrs. Freeland joined the South Methodist church in 1879, wherein she continued to live a devoted and loving Christian life. Two of her sisters, Mrs. Warren WOODSON and Mrs. Henry BOWERS of Leavenworth attended the funeral. Last Friday noon from up Coal creek way where Mr. and Mrs. Freeland had lived for more than forty years, so well and favorably known, one of the largest funeral processions in local history wended its way to Valley Falls, where from the Methodist church, the funeral of Mother Freeland was held, Rev. C.B. Zook of Topeka, assisted by Rev. Beauchamp, the pastor, conducting the services in the presence of a large congregation. The burial was in the Farrar cemetery. Card of Thanks. The Washington Register Washington County Thursday August 18, 1904 Hull-Mundis. Wednesday evening at 9:30 a.m. Miss Lucy A. MUNDI and Mr. Wm. P. HULL were united in marriage by Rev. E.O. Johnson, at the home of the brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Mundis. Mrs. Hull has been engaged in drug work as a registered pharmacist for several years and Mr. Hull is a civil engineer of Osawatomie, Kan.
The Washington Register Wahington County Thursday August 18, 1904 Mrs. Cora Parker. Cora IDLET was born in Elsworth county, Kans., in 1881. Four years ago she was married to Henry PARKER. She departed this life on Friday, July 8th, at her home, 9 miles southwest of Stromsburg, at the age of 23 years, of tuberculosis. She leaves, to miss her, a husband, an infant daughter, father, mother and numerous other relatives and friends. The funeral which occurred Sunday afternoon from the family residence was so largely attended that it was necessary to hold the services in the grove. Rev. Reed of Benedict conducted the services. Eighty carriages followed the body to its last resting place in Benedict cemetery. This large gathering of neighbors and friends to pay their last respects is a testimony of the respect and esteem in which the departed was held by those who knew her.

The Washington Register Washington County Thursday August 18, 1904 Wm. WILKINSON, an old resident of Little Blue township, died Monday, August 8. The deceased was 75 years old and had lived in this county about thirty-five years. He had raised a large family most of whom survive him. The funeral was held Tuesday and the remains were interred in the Hanover cemetery.
The Washington Register Washington County Thurdsay August 18, 1904 A Family Reunion. Friends and relatives to the number of about fifty met at the pleasant home of A.A. GRINDLE, August 14, in honor of Mrs. Anna Sheldon PEASE and her two sons of Wellington, O. She has been absent from Kansas 23 years and is visiting in the vicinity of her early childhood. Mrs. Pease is a niece of Mrs. Geo. F. DUNNUCK and Mrs. Sarah DRISKELL. The guests arrived early with well filled baskets and enjoyed a very good time in social conversation and music. As each family came well prepared a sumptous dinner was soon spread in the shade of the lawn trees. After a well spent day the guests were summoned to a place where Mr. BOYD took a picture of the following families: G.F. DUNNUCK, Mr. and Mrs. Louis KEMPER, Mr. and Mrs. E.A. The Washington Register Washington County Thursday July 18, 1904 Frank FRAZIER the son of Wm. Frazier of this city, died at the Topeka asylum Tuesday, July 26. He was taken there a month since on account of softening of the brain caused by excessive heat, he was an unmarried man about 35 years of age. The remains were brought to this city, the funeral was held at his father's residence today at 1 p.m. under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. of the Throop lodge, and the sermon was preached by Dr. Hageman and the corpse was interred in the city cemetery.
The Washington Register Washington County Thursday July 28, 1904 Wm. J. SWAN was born in Cuba, Kan., August 16, 1871, and died in Los Angeles, Calif., July 16, 1904. During his early life he lived in this city with his parents, but when he was about fourteen years of age the family moved to Haddam, and the deceased was employed in the bank at that place, afterwards for several years he was cashier in the Washington National Bank of this city. Three years since he severed his connection with the above named bank and became connected with the First National. His health failed and after struggling heroically with the disease consumption, he finally resigned as cashier a year ago and went west in hopes of regaining his health, but of no avail. He was married in this city, October 1899, to Miss Laura SOFIELD and one child, a boy was born to them. The wife and child, two brothers and one sister, J.B. Sofield, the father of the widow and all relatives have the sincere sympathies of many friends in the hour of affliction. The remains were brought from Los Angeles and the funeral was held Friday at the residence of this city. Dr. Hageman officiating, and the body was interred in the city cemetery.
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 Death of Grandma Rhea. After a long illness Mrs. Amanda RHEA, with her husband, Spartan Rhea, one of the first settlers in Leavenworth County, died Wednesday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.R. YOUNG in this city, where she lived many years. Mrs. Rhea was a widow and 81 years of age. The funeral will be from the Christian church this Friday morning.
