The Topeka Daily State Journal Monday May 13, 1918 John G. West Dead. Old Citizen Had Been in Grain Business for Many Years. John G. WEST, 73 years old, died this morning at 11:30 o'clock at his home, 1016 Harrison street. West was an old resident of Topeka and had lived in the home he died in for the last 35 years. He was engaged in the grain business in North Topeka for many years and during the last few years maintained an office on the South side. His health has been failing rapidly for the last two years. For the last years he has been confined to home for the great part of the time. He was confined to his bed for two weeks before his death this morning. Funeral announcments will be made later.

SCOTT, 42 years old, died Sunday in a local hospital. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Church of God. Burial in Ritchie cemetery. Mrs. Laura M. MEREDITH, 62 years old, died this morning at her home, 205 East Twelfth street. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock from the First United Brethren church. The Topeka Daily State Journal Friday May 10, 1918 Suffrage To Wait. Senate Decides Definitely to Postpone Women's Wants. Washington, May 10.--Formal announcement of the definite postponement of consideration of the woman's suffrage resolution was made in the sentate today by Senator Jones of New Mexico, chairman of the Woman's Suffrage committee. As soon as sufficient votes can be obtained to insure its adoption he said, the measure will be taken up. Senator Smith of Georgia said when women in his state desired suffrage, a constitutional amendment would not be necessary to get it. Senator Martin, majority leader, said he would be glad to see the question submitted to a referendum in Virginia. Senator Curtis of Kansas asserted that "two-thirds of the Republicans are ready to vote any time." Thirty-two Republicans, he said, are ready to vote for the amendment, eleven are opposed to it, and one is doubtful. Senator Reed of Missouri, insisted on a vote today as did Senator Gallinger, minority leader.
The Washington Register Washington County Thursday October 13, 1904 Sherman CLINE was born in Iowa June 17, 1871, and died Wednesday morning October 5, of typhoid fever. He leaves a wife and six samll children. The funeral was preached at the Lowe Center school house Thursday at 1 p.m. by Rev. Lodwig of Morrowville. The remains were buried in Allen's cemetery. The Washington Register Washington County Thursday October 13, 1904 Mrs. Emma WHINNINGTON, wife of W.E. Whinnington, died at her home five miles west of Hollenberg, October 8. She was only twenty-one years old and had been married a little more than a year. Her funeral was preached by Rev. W.P. Botts, in the presence of a large congregation of relatives and friends. Her remains were laid to rest in the Steele City cemetery.

The Topeka Daily State Journal Wednesday May 8, 1918 Topekan Is Hit. Sidney C. Harris Wounded in Trenches in France. He has Father, Mother and Sisters Living Here. J.F. HARRIS, 400 East Fourth street, today received a telegram from the war department announcing that his son, Sidney C. HARRIS, had been slightly wounded in the trenches in France. Sidney Harris is 19 years of age and enlisted in the regular army at Topeka, April 18, 1917. he went to Jefferson Barracks right after his enlistment and traveled across the sea with General Pershing. When a lad he was a messenger boy and at the time war was declared he was working in a packing house at St. Joseph and came to Topeka to enlist. Harris has two brothers and two sisters living in Topeka. They are: Mrs. Frank PARKINSON and Mrs. L.R. SUMMERS, 406 Market street; John Harris, 425 Cedar street and Irwin Harris who lives at 400 East Fourth street. His mother also lives here.
The Topeka Daily State Journal Tuesday May 7, 1918 Norton Loses Soldier. Walter Harmonson Died Few Days After Going to Camp. Norton, Kan., May 7.--Norton mourns the loss of its first soldier boy today, Walter Harmonson, 26 years old. He left Monday of last week with twenty others for Camp Funston, apparently in good health, but was stricken with pneumonia Saturday morning and died there Sunday afternoon. Harmonson was a most exemplary young man and it was a sad blow to his widowed mother and to this community where he was born and reared.
