    3. Cato was here: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=37.66778,+-94.73972+%28Coordinates%29&iwloc=A&hl=en "In 1854 a merchant named John Rogers opened a store/trading post here.  He soon had a thriving business trading with settlers, traders, hunters, and Indians moving through the sparsely settled area.  His store also became a stopping place on a stagecoach line running from St. Joseph, MO to Fort Gibson in OK Territory.  Peter Smith (Sonneson), a newly arrived immigrant from Sweden, liked the area and became Rogers' business partner in 1858.  Ezekiel J. Boring established the first post office in 1858 and suggested the community be named in honor of Judge Sterling G. Cato, a KS Territorial judge.  Organized opposition to the planned rail line forced the railroad to build elsewhere and Cato began to decline." Dry Wood was 1.6 miles ESE of Cato. 1. [KS-GHOSTTOWNS] Introductions
    2. Thank you for your introduction and for the invitation to introduce ourselves. My name is Lois Kay (Parrish) Hoxsie, and I live in Mesa, Arizona. I subscribe to the list because of my interest in the ghosttown of Cato, Kansas and in the families who lived near it. According to history books I have read, in 1854 a merchant named John Rogers opened a store/trading post about eight miles south of Fort Scott. He soon had a thriving business trading with settlers, traders, hunters, and Indians moving through the sparsely settled area. His store also became a stopping place on a stagecoach line running from St. Joseph, Missouri to Fort Gibson in Oklahoma Territory. Peter Smith (Sonneson), a newly arrived immigrant from Sweden, liked the area and became Rogers' business partner in 1858. Ezekiel J. Boring (my great-great-great uncle) established the first post office in 1858 and suggested the community be named in honor of Judge Sterling G. Cato, a Kansas Territorial judge. When the Civil War began, Rogers raised a company of the Sixth Kansas Cavalry from men in the area and became its captain. Peter Smith was one of the men who enlisted with Rogers. While Rogers was home on furlough, bushwackers attacked; and Capt. Rogers was killed. "After the war ended, Peter Smith returned to Cato, married Rogers' widow, resumed running the store, and began to expand the business. "Crawford County was legislated into being Feb. 13, 1867, and a line was drawn between Crawford and Bourbon Counties right through the center of a building Smith had constructed when he returned from the War. A tax problem between the counties arose and Smith moved his holdings a half-mile south into Crawford County where he built a two-story store building with a residence attached and proceeded to engage in a number of enterprises. "He owned a sawmill and in 1868 added a mill for grinding grain, the first in Crawford County and the second in Kansas. Machinery for the mill was shipped by rail to Fort Scott and Smith drove there in a wagon drawn by six oxen to transport it to Cato. It was powered by a steam engine and frightened the Indians who came to watch. Its steam, they thought, was a manifestation of the Great Spirit and the shrill blast of its whistle, the screams of demons. "Another of Smith's enterprises was breaking and selling Texas longhorns to be used as working oxen, using his own unique method. On long hauls he hooked a team of experienced oxen directly in front of the wagon, with a pair of wild Texas bovines ahead of them, and a third pair of oxen, also well-broken, in front as the lead team, thus placing the wild pair between two teams of seasoned animals. By the time he returned from his journey, he had a team of trained Texas oxen for sale. "Peter Smith thought Cato might become an important town but his plans were ruined when the Kansas City, Fort Scott & Gulf railroad tried to build through the place. Organized opposition to the rail line developed in the community and as fast as rails were laid they were torn up and bridges built across the creeks were burned. Promoters of the railroad gave up and moved to a different location to lay their rails and Cato began to decline. It is no longer shown on most Kansas maps and only one building, the old store built by Peter Smith remains. ("The Seeker," Crawford County Genealogical Society of Southeast Kansas, Spring 1977). The 1906 plat map shows a community of thirty or more buildings including a school, a doctor's office, and a livery. According to John Spurling, who was a local historian, Peter's niece, Eva Lindsay, operated the Cato store and post office until 1915. The store building was destroyed by fire 17 Jul 1994 after it was struck by lightening. I'm really not sure what is left of Cato. About fifteen years ago, I took pictures of three buildings: the original log school, a rock-walled school/store, and the wood-framed Christian Church. It is my understanding that the church building has since burned. There are several nearby cemeteries. The two largest are Large Cemetery in Bourbon County, and McGonigle Cemetery in Crawford County. Both cemeteries are well maintained. All of the Crawford County cemeteries have been surveyed. Some of the burials are online at: http://www.interment.net/us/ks/crawford.htm and http://www.rootsweb.com/~kscemete/kscem.htm. I have done a lot of research in the area as I am descended from four families (Elliott, McGonigle, Bixler, and Nickell) who were all in the area of Cato as early as 1870. I would enjoy helping anyone who is researching families from the area. My cousin, Walter Parrish, maintains a website that would also be of interest to anyone researching the area: http://lincolntownshipcrawfordcountyks.com/default.aspx. ____________________________________________________________ Click to become an artist and quit your boring job. http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL2141/fc/Ioyw6i3mzjsD7gyB8EUarSgrV4TyzsBfNRvA8u0kjHES9S3nywhS25/

    3. Greetings to all Kansas Ghost Town mail list subscribers. I'd like to first thank Kathleen Burnett for one starting the Ghost Town mail list for each state and your years as the administrator of this list. My name is Fred Dittmar and I am here to offer any help and direction I can. Although I'm not living in your state I may have some information to give you directions in researching. In order to stimulate my quiet lists I'm writing to ask some questions of you the subscribers. There are 72 subscribers on this mail list at the moment. No one on the list bites or says Boo to any questions or comments so feel free to write and talk with others. Where do you live? What Ghost Town or area are you interested in? What county was your Ghost Town located in? Are there any remnants left of the town? Foundations? Buildings? Cemeteries? Do you have any information about the time line of the town? Did it have a post office? If a cemetery is there is it currently maintained? Has it been surveyed and is it posted on the internet? What's the link? Do you know if the State has posted a Historic Sign or Marker noting the town or area? Please cite any sources (book, publication, family history) you find the information in. Thank you all.
