This is a test of the Rootsweb lists I am on. It is also some information for the list administrator if they feel the list is not running as expected. And finally it is an attempt to get something posted to the list so Rootsweb does not turn the list off. The list admin should probably go to this page: http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ and try to set up a new mailman login, if not already done. If you do that you will probably get to this page eventually: https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/lists/setupmail Then you might want to sign up for this list: https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/search/Listowners But be warned, you will receive postings from that list almost every day. May 8 a day at times. Another option that I do not encourage is to turn the list over to me - at least temporarily. Again, I do not want that done if you are willing to keep the list. Mike Flannigan

Fellow genealogists and anyone concerned with preserving our sacred cemeteries, Time Warner and The History Channel are sponsoring a 'Save Our History' grant award for which people can go online and cast their vote. Voting ends on April 27th, so time is short. Our cemetery restoration project was the only genealogy group or cemetery project to be chosen as one of the five finalists, so I truly hope that you will go to the Time Warner website and cast your vote for the James Cemetery project. If awarded this grant, we will use 100% of the grant to begin installing an antique-style aluminum alloy fence around the perimeter in order to help halt further desecration of this sacred and historic burial ground. You can read more about our James Cemetery project at the Time Warner 'Save Our History' voting website. Please unite with us as a group of people concerned about the ever-increasing destruction of our cemeteries by VOTING for us at the website below. And note also that ANYONE with Internet access can VOTE!! www.aroundrr.com/SaveOurHistory Anthony
Hello, I have a relative, Enos Guiles, that is buried in the Terra Cotta Cemetery near Carneiro, Ellsworth County, KS. This small abandoned circa 1880's cemetery is located on private land evidently used to range cattle on. I had a researcher from Smoky Hill / Brookville area locate this weed patch of a cemetery for me yesterday, needless to say it is in bad condition and if nothing can be done towards it's preservation I'm afraid it will be lost forever. The researcher, a very kind lady researcher, has offered to go back and mark the cemetery and have her son weed eat the grave area of the cemetery. No, she has not a single relative buried there but is a very kind humanitarian lady. And she won't take a cent for her efforts, some people are just so wonderful! Below is her description on the cemetery's condition. "Just wanted you to know that I had success today in locating the Terra Cotta Cemetery. It wasn't easy, but we did it. I took a friend with me and we drove up and down the road that the cemetery was supposed to be on. We didn't see anything that looked like a cemetery, so I called my son who locates phone lines for SBC." "He said he knew where I was and told us to go a little further down another road. We went about a quarter of a mile and I saw a farmer getting in a vehicle, so I pulled up and asked him about the cemetery. He said he knew exactly where it was because he owned the land. Turns out that it was right beside the road, but was so overgrown with weeds that we couldn't see anything. He said he had only seen a couple of stones, but we were welcome to go look. " "Finally, I spotted something and walked over and would you believe, it was Enos' tombstone. It's been knocked over (probably by cows), but isn't broken. Enos' s tombstone had been knocked down, but the stone itself is not broken. It needs to be "glued" back to its base and the finials put back on. You'll see what I mean when you get the pictures I took. His was the only tombstone that we found, but there could be more under all the weeds and brush. I'm sure there are probably other graves there, but I will have to make another trip over to Ellsworth County and copy the pages from the cemetery records that the DAR ladies did. I took pictures and we (myself, my friend , and my son) decided that we're going back and try to "glue" it back together using masonry cement. That way, someone can at least see a standing tombstone and know that there is something there besides weeds. We even thought of making a small sign that says "Terra Cotta Cemetery." My son said he wo! uld take his weed whip and see if he could knock down some of the taller weeds so that we could see if there are more stones" My question of this wonderful lady was; Doesn't Kansas have any resource for the preservation of old cemeteries? Her reply is listed below: "The State of KS doesn't have a Cemetery Restoration Program that I'm aware of, but it wouldn't hurt to investigate. Ellsworth County doesn't have a genealogical society, although they do have a historical society. I don't know if they'd be interested in helping mark the area or not. The farmer did tell me that he'd thought of having someone come and "witch" the plot to see if they could figure out how many graves are there. I gave him the name of a man I know who is very good at that sort of thing. Maybe the farmer will carry through." The location of Terra Cotta Cemetery is: 29th Rd south off old HWY 40 almost to avenue J and the RR tracks in Carneiro, Ellsworth County, Kansas USA. Just a bit north of Mushroom State Park and west of Brookville. GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 38.7478, Longitude: -97.9628 My great grand uncle Enos Guiles was buried there on 2nd May of 1882, some 124+ years ago at the age of 13. I have hopes that possibly his mother is also buried there as well, my GGGM Phoebe A. Guiles. It shouldn't be totally up to this nice lady genealogist to restore this cemetery to a better condition. Can't anything be done? I am disabled, live in Atlanta, GA and don't get to Kansas very often. But I can send monies towards the preservation of this and other Kansas cemeteries. Living in Georgia I know that Georgia's DNR (Dept. of Natural Resources) has a program to preserve old cemeteries. Example: In March of 2006 alone, the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources was awarded a $86,000 in a Preserve America grant by the National Park Service to help preserve Georgia's historic cemeteries. Thank You, Tony Boos talan66@bellsouth.net
Just thought that everyone might be interested to know that as of July 1, 2006, all 41 rural Osborne County, Kansas cemeteries will have a sign or wooden historical marker signifying the name of the cemetery, to aid all visitors to the county in locating the correct cemetery they are searching for. This has been a project of Osborne County Tourism, Inc. for the past five years with the sponsorship of the Sarver Charitable Foundation. All, I am searching for a cemetery in Reno County called, "Lincoln Township Cemetery." I drove by there last week, but I didn't see anything. I just wonder if it was plowed under? If anyone has any information about this, please notify me through this mailing list. I have an ancestor that was buried there in 1890. Thanks a lot! Les
Dear List Members, If you are interested in knowing about other genealogical mailing list available, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fuller's Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any Rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. If you are having problem and I do not answer you right away, know that I will. I like many of you work full time outside of my home. I am fortunate that I can check my e-mail any time I wish, but know that there are spaces of time I cannot. I always check my e-mail each and every evening and will respond to message as quickly as possible. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. When posting a query regarding a surname it would help all of us if you would put your surname in CAPS. This way the members can easily pick out the surnames you are looking for. On the other hand when the entire message is in CAPS we feel that we are being yelled at. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now, the hardest thing is when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting from one from one of us. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at Kathleen.burnett@era.com or in the evenings at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. 7. If your list has the gateway open, meaning the messages posted on the board also hit he list, know that every once in a while a SPAM message that is caught by the Board filter slips through the gateway and hits the list before it can be stopped. JUST DELETE IT. By responding to the list regarding he offending message, you just continue it on, and there is not one thing I can do about it at that point. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me. Greetings from Alaska: Our church has established a cemetery, and I have volunteered to be responsible for the recordkeeping. Can anyone tell me of a source or sources for cemetery recordkeeping materials such as journals, software, etc.? I would like to keep both computerized and hard-copy records. I would also like to find or design a form to give to family members for the collecting of information. I would like to include genealogical information and, as available, a copy of the death certificate. I would welcome copies of old or new cemetery book pages that would give me some ideas as to how records are kept. It would be nice to be able to purchase ready-made volumes designed for this purpose. But I can design our own forms if it becomes necessary. I would also be interested in materials that would assist us in keeping tract of plats, such as mapping software. Any and all suggestions would be welcomed, as well as addresses for possible sources. We don't have much in the way of resources here in the middle of Alaska! Help woukld be appreciated! Thank you, Sue Renkert Fairbanks, Alaska

Dear List Members, I received the following announcement on the KS-Family-Group-Sheets Mailing List and thought it would be of interest to many of you. Kathleen Burnett List Mom "I'm happy to announce a new Special Project, the Kansas Family Group Sheet (FGS) project. It's my privilege to be managing it, and I hope to be very busy adding family group sheets submitted by all of you. The URL for the page is http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/kansas/ . I think you'll find the page easy to read and use, but if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. The USFGS home page ( http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/) links to all the states. I hope you'll take advantage of this new project. Those of us who have been working to bring it to Kansas are very excited about its possibilities. Any family group that lived in Kansas, even for a short time, can be posted. THE ONLY PERSONS WHO CANNOT BE POSTED ARE THOSE WHO ARE LIVING. Each family group sheet provides space for basic information about father, mother, and children; so if you only know about one family unit, you know enough to put the information up. If you know more, you can add more family group sheets: the father's parents and siblings, the mother's parents and siblings, the children's spouses and children, and on and on. If you've traced the family into other states, you can post your group sheet in those states as well as Kansas. But just one family sheet in one state can be enough to make new and exciting connections. We've prepared the pages and forms, added search engines and links, and now it's in your hands. Send in your family group sheets. One a day, one a week, whatever works for you. Tell your fellow researchers about the site. Talk about it at your next genealogical society meeting. Mention it in your emails. The more people hear about the site, the more contributions we're likely to get; and the more contributions we receive, the more valuable the project is going to be. I'll be waiting for your family to turn up in my mailbox! Charles Barnum, KS FGS manager" I started my genealogy research in Kansas about 40 years ago.
Dear List Members, If you were effected by the Comcast buy out, then you need to read this, if not delete it. Just this evening, I have receive over 100 requests for me to change e-mail address to a Comcast address. Many of these requests mention multiple lists of which the sender needs their e-mail address changed. It will take me a good week or so to get through them all. My suggestion is; If you still have the ability to unsubscribe go to PASSWORD Central at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ type in your old e-mail address, and follow the directions. You will receive an e-mail from which you can unsubscribe. If you can't do this, then you will just need to re-subscribe with your new address and let the old one bounce off. To re-subscribe this go to John Fuller's mailing list site http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html or remember you can subscribe and or unsubscribe by sending only the word UNSUBSCRIBE or SUBSCRIBE to XXXXXX-L-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM or XXXXXX-D-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM if you are on the Digest List. Naturally change the XXXXXX to the name of the list. If all else fails, contact me, but be understanding if it takes me a while to get to you. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
For those of you who are visiting the cemeteries and graves of your loved ones, your ancestors this weekend and have a few extra flowers, think of placing them on one of the lonely graves which are never visited. Or, if you are living in an area where you have no one, think of visiting a cemetery and placing flowers by one of these lonely graves. I live in Logan Utah and tomorrow I will be visiting several local cemeteries and will be placing flowers on graves. Over the past years I have adopted these graves, these people and I hope that someone out there is doing the same for my loved ones. This is the day to remember those who came before us, who forged the paths that we now walk. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
Dear List Members, It is that time of year when some of you will be leaving on Vacations. Dear List Members, It is time again for one of my information messages. First of all I want to thank each of you who go out of your way to follow the list rules. I belong to many lists in my research and truly feel you are the best list members out there. If you are enjoying this list and would like to know what other genealogical lists Rootsweb has for you, go to John Fuller's site located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html It is the best source for Genealogical mailing lists that I know of. If you would like to visit the archived messages for this list or any Rootsweb List you may go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com and type in the name of the list and from there you can search by date. There is a great Rootsweb site, Password Central, you can go to if you want to find out what Rootsweb lists you are a member of or need to unsubscribe from a list, just follow the instructions. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ To unsubscribe from any Rootsweb list send only the word UNSUBSCRIBE to XXXX-L-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM Naturally exchange the XXXX with the name of the list and the L with a D if you are on the Digest List. I have very few rules on the lists I take care of; the main one is to treat your fellow members as you would like to be treated, also Roll Calls will be called by me, with a beginning date and an ending date. The posting of virus warnings, chain letters, political announcements, current events and test messages are NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me, KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net Please remember that I am here, working behind the scenes. When an offending message is posted, just DELETE it. Know that I am most likely taking care of the problem personally with the person who posted the message. When you send your unhappiness to the list you just continue on the problem both for the members and for myself. If you are concerned that I have missed the message, you can send me a message at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. Would you like to see the growth in the United States between 1650 and 1983? This is a great visual. I have shared it before but I am sure we have many new members since then. http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~stephan/Animation/us.gif This is your list.
