Sounds to me like "Arbeitlager" which was like a boot camp before military service and was mandatory for all young men and women. Their term of service was called "Arbeitsdienst" a year long public service for the country. Most of them, especially the women, were assigned to farms, while men were doing community projects like draining swamps, working for the forest service or wildlife department. A comprehensive course accompanied these practical work applications at the camp. They did not stay with the farmer's family, they went to the "Arbeitslager" after their work day. Wmen and men's camps were separate and not even in the same vicinity. Immediately after the Arbeitsdienst they were drafted into the Army, Navy or Air Force. Men only. Here is a link to the Reichsarbeitsdienst. During the war they served as military auxiliary. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichsarbeitsdienst More on here, where the initial purpose is stated for the RAD to eliminate unemployment. http://www.schoolhistory.co.uk/year9links/nazigermany/work.pdf Aida Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
