    1. Re: [KRUGER] DNA INFORMATION UPDATED
    2. Audrey Hancock
    3. Hello, Marguerite, The Y-DNA Project requires a male individual bearing one of the surnames of the group...KRUGER in your case. Since Y-DNA is that part of the genes passed from father to son which makes a person a male, only males inherit it. Since it is much easier in the case of genealogy to trace descendancy based on a male's surname, since in most cases the surname is passed from father to son through the generations along with the Y-DNA. There is a test (mtDNA) for women, but since women change their names when getting married, the surname lineages get lost and old records don't help much either, as if records are to be found women's maiden names are usually not given...they merely become Mrs. John Doe or Mary Doe, wife of John Doe or not even mentioned. In tracking lines per genealogy sake at this time, we have to resort to a male in the family. So...frequently females sponsor a male cousin, uncle, brother, or like bearing the surname (Kruger) of interest. I don't know anything about the National Genographic Project and its goals, nor how it would work in conjunction with family history and the goals of FamilyTree DNA company's results. FamilyTree DNA company as I understand use junk genes in their process, which means it does not identify paternity, health problems, etc., but can only tell you if you are a descendant of a particular line with the surname of interest. Of course, one could discover through this process that their markers/Alleles do not match those of others of their family group. In this case, one would have to consider a variety of reasons: adoption, illegitimacy, alias, etc. somewhere in the genealogical line. Hope this helps.
