My father, Curtis Kornegay, has obtained a journal dating from the 1880's with entries by RICHARD HENRY KORNEGAY born August 30, 1854 son of WILLIAM Kornegay and Susan Winders, grandson of HARGETT Kornegay and Susanna Simmons (ISAAC4, WILLIAM3, GEORGE2, JOHN GEORGE1). In this journal are recorded business transactions, purchases and travel expenses. There is an entry where he purchased a bed and various bedding items from the estate of his grandmother Susanna Simmons (widow of Hargett Kornegay,Sr.) in 1881. Among his grocery list were an occasional entry for "beer" and "whiskey". He also had notes from a sermon with the entry, "In my father's house are many mansions". One of the more interesting pages has written with an old ink pen in excellent handwriting the note: "When this you see, remember me though many miles apart we be." Many miles and 120 years! If anyone would like to see a scanned image of this, I'll be glad to share. I also have a photo of Richard Henry, Email me at [email protected] This journal is remarkable for me because there is an entry where my great great uncle (my father's line) made a purchase from my great great grandfather J.J. Hillin (my mother's line)!!! The journal was graciously given to my father by his sister, Dorothy Kornegay Rockett, who has a wealth of geneology on our family collected over many years.
