My wife and I are on a vacation. We set out Monday (Aug 6) from Murfreesboro, TN (near Nashville) with no plans or deadlines other than to make it down to Columbia, SC by Saturday (Aug 11). After moseying (first time I ever tried to write that word down!) through East Tennessee and Western NC for a couple of days, I made the trek I have been wanting to make for years...I drove to the eastern side of NC and drove through Duplin County. We drove through Kornegay three times trying to find it! Then we drove to Kenansville. On the way there, I passed a "Ward's Bridge Rd.", and, since my Ward ancestors are from that county, too, I had to back up and turn on it to see what I could see....mostly turkey farms! We visited the museum in Kenansville and drove around in the historic district (which is just about the whole town) for a short while. Interesting incident occured while eating lunch in a Bojangles in Goldsboro just before we turned south to go to Duplin Co: I was studying the map to see the best route to take and an older fellow at the next table asked me where I was going. When I told him Duplin Co. to see where my ancestors had come from, he asked if I had ever met......Dallas Herring! How about that! I told him that I hadn't had the privilege of meeting him but I had corresponded with him years ago. Many of us with roots in Duplin Co. owe a great deal to the genealogy work of Dr. Herring. Turns out the fellow at the next table had served on the NC community college board under Dr. Herring and later I believe chaired it himself. I regret that it was getting late in the day as we left Kenansville and I wanted to make some tracks toward New Bern before dark, so we didn't take the time to back track up the other route that would have taken us to Mt. Olive and Rose Hill. Maybe next time. We drove on to New Bern, the landing place of our Kornegay ancestor. I was surprised to find that they pronounce New Bern with the emphasis on the "New", basically like it was one word "Newbern". The old historic district of New Bern is fascinating! It's like a little Savannah or Charleston. I wish we hadn't had that Saturday deadline to get to my son's house in SC, but my granddaughter's fourth birthday's won't wait! Anyway, I just wanted to say, I have made my pilgrimage, now. Matt Ward (gggggrandson of Capt. Jacob Kornegay through his daughter, Rockalena (Roxie Laney) and John Ward.
Matt, Thanks for sharing with us. I hope to make a trip to NC in the near future. I am more anxious than ever now.
