    1. [KORNEGAY-L] Need help - Red Hill Plantation {Cemetry] location
    2. Hi Ruth, or anyone else that knows, I'm trying to 'polish up' some on this family's records and get a better understanding of locations, etc., and I need help with discernment. Re: Ruth's 2-27-01 msg. - County, NC Heritate Series Reprinted - More About The Kornegay Family 'Our Heritage' by Claude Moore August 3, 1984 "Last week I wrote an article about the obliteration of "Red Hill" an old plantation house belonging originally to the Kornegay family, about four miles east of Mount Olive. There were a few errors in the article and as a historian & writer, I felt I should correct them according to research done by others. The house of which I wrote was the second house at Red Hill & was the home of Basil Kornegay [d: circa 1821], a surveyor & planter, the last family member to live there. The original home "Red Hill" was build during the colonial period on the east side of Holmes' Gardens & Lake & north of NC highway 55 & was probably built by George Kornegay, Sr. [died 1773] for his son George Kornegay, II who lived there. This old house burned in 1905. the Kornegay family cemetery is nearby & those buried there are: George Kornegay II & his wife, Margaret Kornegay, Basil & names others. Re: George Sr. "his place of burial is not certain however, he was probably buried at the 'Kornegay Old Burial Ground' on his land at Kornegay's Bridge on the Northeast Cape Fear River in Duplin County. His memorial stone is now at Red Hill in Wayne County, a few miles up the river from Kornegay's Bridge [Per John Baxter Flowers 'George Kornegay Family' article 651, pg 317, 318 [Someone gave me copies of pages without the name of the book this was copied from. I think it may be from "The Heritage Of Wayne Co NC book, published by Wayne Co Historical Asst. and Dobbs Co Genealogy Soc. Can someone tell me for sure?]. Question: Is Red Hill a community or town ? I've been thinking all along that was the name of their [George Jr and son Basil's} plantation? In Duplin Co? 1. George Sr. Memorial Stone at Red Hill in Wayne Co 2. George, Jr's Red Hill: located east side of Holmes' Gardens & Lake & north of NC Hwy 55, build by Geo. Sr, for son Geo. Jr who lived there - burned 1905. Re: George Jr inherited [from father George, Sr]: 150 acres in the fork of Beaverdam on the North East Branch, Duplin Co 50 acres over Spring Branch, Duplin Co {What does 'over' Spring Branch mean?]. 350 acres on the Horse Pen Branch. Questions: [1] Is Holmes' Gardens & Lake located north of NC Hwy.55 a name of a historical site or a name of a community, town, etc.? [2] Is Holmes' Garden & Lake located on one of the inherited land sites? If so which one? 2. Second Red Hill: Where Basil lived - about four miles east of Mount Olive - tore down abt 1984. Question: Does anyone know what part, if any, of the land that Geo. Jr. inherited from father that his 'Red Hill' plantation house was built on? Question: Did the two different people just give different discriptions of the same location, thence, the first and second Red Hill Plantation house was build in the same location? And this is where George II, wife Margaret, son Basil are all buried and George Sr.'s Memorial stone is in the same place. Would this be a correct entry to make in describing where they are buried -- "Family Cemetery on Red Hill Plantation land near Mount Olive, Duplin Co, NC." Or was the first and second Red Hill plantation house built on different land locations? In other words is the Holmes' Gardens & Lake, north of NC Highway 55, a different location than 4 miles east of Mount Olive. If this be the case then which one has George Sr's memorial stone? Of course I find Mt. Olive, Hwy 55 and see that they are on the Duplin & Craven line and can get a grip on that easy enough, and understand Holmes' Garden & Lake area [which I can't find on map] but the discription of where it is is in the same general area, but is it the exact same area?. Thanks for any help. Kathlynn
