From today's Goldsboro New Argus (North Carolina) Kornegay wins Jaycee DSA award By Staff Writer BONNIE EDWARDS MOUNT OLIVE -- Kevin Kornegay was presented the 2000 Distinguished Service Award by the Mount Olive Jaycees for his work on the Kids World playground, a $133,000 community project built by hundreds of local volunteers. Kornegay said he wasn't expecting anything like that when he went to the Southern Wayne Country Club on Thursday night to attend the Jaycees' annual banquet. He received the award from last year's recipient, Hervy B. Kornegay Jr., who praised his cousin's work to raise the $133,000 needed for the playground. Kevin Kornegay also donated free lodging for the visiting consultants at the Sleep Inn motel he manages. He coordinated many volunteers and worked at the playground construction site all day, every day of the project. "It's been an extremely exciting year for the town of Mount Olive and all of us," Kevin Kornegay said. "I think it really goes to show what we're capable of doing when we work together."
Pat - Thanks for the note. I believe that I had the information that you referenced. When I lived in Houston I was lucky enough to acquire two copies of the book by Zae Hargett Quinn and a couple of different histories of Fayette County, Texas at a wonderful used book store named Colleen's. My uncle had the state archive records and that is what originally got me interested in genealogy. I still remember the day at the Clayton Library in Houston that I discovered the Zae Hargett Quinn book. Over the course of a couple of hours I went from David Smith Kornegay to George Kornegay. I was completely overwhelmed with emotion when it was over. I had the same emotional experience last night when I saw David Smith's and Elizabeth's picture on the website. That experience would not have been possible without this list server and I thank everyone involved. I sent a long email to Eduardo this morning hoping to make contact and forward him the pictures I found. One is stamped "From W.M. Tauch's Photographic Gallery, Schulenburg, Texas, FITCH Operator. They are probably either Kornegays or McGarys. They are too small to photograph with a digital camera but I would love the opportunity to send them to anyone that might help identify who these people might be.
I am interested and would like to "meet" these Kornegay relatives. Ruth At 11:35 AM 2/16/01 -0500, you wrote: >We all would like to see them. Benny: Due to the lateness of the hour, I had forgotten that I received more information on your family from Marjorie Lawrence, a lady working on my line, She obtained the data from the Texas State Archives. In 1969 a friend in Texas, who lives 6 miles from Broqueville, knowing that I had a KORNEGAY line sent me a picture from the Waco News (Apr 21, 1969) of the gravestone of a San Jacinto Veteran, David Smith KORNEGAY . The Item said "SAN JACINTO VETERAN David Smith Kornegay's gravesite is nearly hidden in Basqueville Cemetery by the giant limbs of a nearby oak tree. The simple marker erected in 1936, 80 years after his death, is surrounded by native grass and Bluebonnet flowers. Today, Kornegay and the others who fought at Aan Jacinto in 1836 for Texas independence, will be honored with all state offices and local banks closed. Local historian Bob Davis reports that Kornegay came to Texas from his native North Carolina in 1830 and married the former Miss Elizabeth McGARY of Sequin. After surviving the San Jacinto battle with Sam Houston, Kornegay wa one of only five Texans believed to have escaped from the Dawson Massacre. He died 12 years later, at age 46. (Wilton Abel photo)" I wondered for years who this KORNEGAY could be and then a couple of years ago I met via computer, Eduardo and Margaret and all of the peices started falling into place after finding the wills in Jones County by Zae Hargett Gwynn. Did you know that some of the HARGETT's are related to some of the KORNRGAYs? You are lucky that your David Smith KORNEGAY is so well documented and you may want to write to the Texas Archives for the folder that they have on him if you don't have that. There is also material in the Sam Houston Library. On 5/5/1999 Jerry Quinn wrote to the list" Cousin Eduardo has sent me a picture of Elizabeth McGARY, wife of David Smith KORNEGAY, and I have posted it to our web site for all to see. He's sending me a picture of David Smith KORNEGAY too and I'll post it as soon as I get it". I am sure that Eduardo descendant of Edward Dawson KORNEGAY would love to get your pictures. I will look for his address. Pat Hoffman

I don't know about the rest of you, i would like it if you wrote to the whole list. Barbara Green Justice
Benny, Hey don't be ashamed, with out the advent of the home PC probably none of us would have much knowledge of the other family lines. This has made it easier to encompass the entire family tree. There are folks out there everyday who discover the Kornegay's on line for the first time. Thinking, "gee, I wonder if they are kin to my granddad or great aunt so and so" It is only natural to discover your own line first. That is what we do and know best. Then we share, to complete the whole family tree. Sheila
Pat and Kathlynn - Hello and thanks for the response. My Kornegay lineage is George>David>Robert>David Smith>Annie Elizabeth Kornegay Cook>Annie Belle Cook Huff>Nathan David Huff>Sammie Clinton Huff>me. I am almost embarssed to join this list because I know so little about the Kornegays. I cannot verify whether Mary Fisher was the first wife of George, Sr. In the 1970s I became interested in genealogy because of an uncle, John Huff. He has passed on to me family folklore about David Smith Kornegay. I have additional bits of family folkore about his incarceration in and escape from Mexico that I have not found in any published accounts and therefore are unable to validate them. His daughter Annie Elizabeth from whom I am descended was born after David Smith died so I am lucky to be here. My uncle did not know any family history prior to David Smith. I found a reference to Robert and Latitia Kornegay in an old family bible and the trail led to Jones County North Carolina. I did the research there primarily from a book by Zae hargett Gwynn. In the 1970s I visited Jones County and made zerox copies of many of the records that established the trail from George to David Smith. These records are available for sharing if anyone needs them. If any of you can give me a link to Eduardo Kornegay I would greatly appreciate it. I have three photos that came from the trunk of Annie Elizabeth Kornegay Cook after she died. My uncle believes that they are photos of Kornegays. One looks like a young David Smith without the mustache. I would love to send the photos to Eduardo to see if he can identify them. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2001 11:59 PM Subject: Re: [KORNEGAY-L] Hello Everyone > Welcome! to the list Benny. Welcome! to the list Benny. You have a very interesting family. I have quite a bit of information on your family due to the generosity of another descendant of the David Smith KORNEGAY line. He is Eduardo KORNEGAY from Mexico are you familiar with him? I descend from Jacob KORNEGAY and his 2nd wife Mary (WARD) KORNEGAY through Henry and Nancy (CARRAWAY) KORNEGAY Wyatt Y. and Mary Anna----------- KORNEGAY who left North Carolina and migrated to Oktibbeha and Clay Cos MS by 1850 through dau Martha Rebecca KORNEGAY & Thomas Richard NOBLIN I have been doing KORNEGAY research off and on since the 1960's. I, like Kathlynn, would like to find documentation that Mary FISHER is or is not the first wife of George KORNEGAY. I would also love to find out the maiden name of Mary Anna the wife of Wyatt Y. KORNEGAY or a marriage record for them. Two of my many brick walls. We have a nice congenial and helpful group here and always welcome another KORNEGAY Cousin. Pat Hoffman
Hello Benny & Linda, Welcome aboard to the wonderful Kornegay family history searchers. I have your lineage on my database. I live in TX [Dallas area] but originaly from AR where the "triple" Kornegay blood line ended up. My 3 lines are: 1. John George > George Sr > George Jr > Sevil Louella > Miller > John Ward > Hannah Elizabeth Kornegay Simpson > Edmond Simpson > to me. 2. John George > George Sr > Capt. Jacob > John > Miller > John Ward > Hannah Elizabeth Kornegay Simpson > Edmond Simpson > me. [1st cousins of Sevil Louella & John married and had Miller} 3 John George > George Sr > Capt Jacob > Roxy Lanie [aka found Rockalena] Kornegay Ward > Nancy Ward Kornegay > John Ward Kornegay > Hannah Elizabeth Kornegay Simpson > Edmond Simpson > me. [1st cousins Miller Kornegay & Nancy Ward married]. In your records search did you find any document that revealed the name of George Sr's first wife? Earlier researchers claim she was Mary Fisher and that is what everyone has carried forth to date, but it has been determined that no one has any documentation/proof. We all keep waiting for something to spring forth to validate this assumption based purely on the fact that the Fisher name was given as the middle name in several different descendant lines. Benny, tried to make a map - but am not that good and I couldn't copy the one I found on the internet. but this is the direction from Kenansville to New Bern. Only thing, I live about a mile before you get to step # 3 and set # 3 is also near the location of the oldest Kornegay cemetery in this community. If I recall correct - as I said I live in Duplin, Lenoir is the next county going in direction of New Bern and Jones county is next to Lenoir. Hope this makes sense. Hey Benny, Great to meet another Kornegay Kuzin. I have looked up info on David Smith Kornegay about a year ago. It is very interesting history there. My line is George>William>Isaac>Lewis William>Louisa Kornegay. Have you checked out the Kornegay web site? jbquinn.net All the lines are there, some go farther than others, there are pictures there also. Be glad to share any info I have with you. Sheila Lawrence Meridian MS
Sheila - Nice to meet you and thanks for the tip on the web site. I have not yet visited it but will do so now. And thanks for your kind offer of help. I may take you up on that as I get back into the research mode. Also, what is the etiquette of exchanging messages with people from the Kornegay list server. Do you always send everything through the server or is it more appropriate to send small messages like this directly. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2001 6:13 PM Subject: Re: [KORNEGAY-L] Hello Everyone > Hey Benny, > Great to meet another Kornegay Kuzin. Welcome Benny. My Kornegays are from NC and moved to Alabama. My greatgrands married in Jones Co.,NC. They were John W. Kornegay and Eveline Branton. Barbara Green Justice Jax.,Fl.
Ruth, thanks for the reply. I wish I had met you before I visited North Carolina several years. When I did my research it was in the 1970s before genealogical records were computerized. I found a book titled "Records of Jones County, North Carolina 1779-1868" by Zae hargett Gwynn. It has an indexed copy of all the records of Jones County. It starts with at least one of the original Kornegays, George. It has wills, land transactions, etc. Most of my research on the Kornegays came from this book. When I went to the Jones County I was able to tell them the volume and page that I wanted copies of. I have them stored away in a closet. I will get them out and send you an index of those records I copied. I only copied those things that were concerning the Kornegay line from me back to George. When we visited North Carolina we stayed in New Bern. When we got to New Bern I found about 20 Kornegays in the phone book. I called most of them and they were all descendents of the Kornegay slaves. I found out later that most of the Kornegays migrated inland away from New Bern. We drove around the area and found several old grave yards that had Kornegays but none of my ancestors. From records of the Texas war of independence from Mexico I believe that I have discovered what the original pronunciation of Kornegay may have been. I pronounce it Carnegie, like Carnegie Hall. I have one doucument where David Smith Kornegay's commander listed him as Kenegge (I believe that is the spelling). I will verify it. Where is Duplin Co. in relation to New Bern. ----- Original Message ----- From: Ruth R. Hello Everyone - I am Benny Huff. I live in Henderson, County, Texas. Twenty years ago I did some genealogy research on the Kornegays. I have retired and am just now continuing my research. My g-g-grandfather was David Smith Kornegay. He migrated to Texas in 1830 from Jones County, North Carolina. He was the son of Robert and Letetia Kornegay. I made the connection to Jones County through records in an old family bible. I have traced him back to George Kornegay. In the 1970s I visited Jones County, North Carolina and got copies of wills, etc. from George down to David S. I don't have a lot of information but if I can help anyone please let me know. I do have lots of knowledge on David Smith. He was in the battle of San Jacinto, was the first county clerk of Fayette County, Tx. He was in Dawson's Massacre near San Antonio and spent time in a prison in Mexico before escaping.
I have no idea. Barbara
