    3. Patty, I send my condolences. I am so sorry. Life never prepares us for this event. My Uncle on my Dads side was killed in an automobile accident recently. 2. Jerry Quinn
    3. Friends - First off, please accept my apologies for being absent for so long. Sometimes life just gets too involved to do everything you want to do, don't you think? I'm almost disappointed that the President has decided against human clones because I could use another two or three Jerry's around here!! Anyway, if there wasn't enough happening in my so-called life; Network Solutions and my ISP conspired to make the Kornegay pages inaccessible for the last three weeks or so (anybody notice?). After a very heated conversation this afternoon, my ISP has magically "found" the pages they declared were absolutely irretreivable and the pages (all of them) are now back on line. I can't make any changes to the pages until they finish doing "whatever it is they're doing", but hopefully all will be well in a couple of days. Jerry

    3. Sorry, Gayle but I doo not know the history on the Ward's.I do know that there used to be a book in the Public Library in Kenansville on the Ward family. The Summerlin's settled around what is now Summerlin's Cross Roads. Am related to some Summerlins through marriage - but am not familiar with Lucy. Wonder who her parents were. Summerlin's X Rods of mpt far from Ward's Bridge Rd. Good hunting Ruth At 01:30 PM 8/11/01 -0700, you wrote: >Ruth, >Hello. The Ward's Bridge you mention is it where a lot of Ward's lived. 2. Thank you so much, Ruth, for the offer. I'll take you up on that next time. I apologize for not having done so this time, but when we set out on the trip I had no idea where we were going. It was just on a lark that I chose to cross the state after a couple of days in west NC and make the pilgrimage. Matt > > From: "Ruth R. 2. My wife and I are on a vacation. We set out Monday (Aug 6) from Murfreesboro, TN (near Nashville) with no plans or deadlines other than to make it down to Columbia, SC by Saturday (Aug 11). After moseying (first time I ever tried to write that word down!) through East Tennessee and Western NC for a couple of days, I made the trek I have been wanting to make for years...I drove to the eastern side of NC and drove through Duplin County. We drove through Kornegay three times trying to find it! Then we drove to Kenansville. On the way there, I passed a "Ward's Bridge Rd.", and, since my Ward ancestors are from that county, too, I had to back up and turn on it to see what I could see....mostly turkey farms! We visited the museum in Kenansville and drove around in the historic district (which is just about the whole town) for a short while. Interesting incident occured while eating lunch in a Bojangles in Goldsboro just before we turned south to go to Duplin Co: I was studying the map to see the best route to take and an older fellow at the next table asked me where I was going. When I told him Duplin Co. to see where my ancestors had come from, he asked if I had ever met......Dallas Herring! How about that! I told him that I hadn't had the privilege of meeting him but I had corresponded with him years ago. Many of us with roots in Duplin Co. owe a great deal to the genealogy work of Dr. Herring. Turns out the fellow at the next table had served on the NC community college board under Dr. Herring and later I believe chaired it himself. I regret that it was getting late in the day as we left Kenansville and I wanted to make some tracks toward New Bern before dark, so we didn't take the time to back track up the other route that would have taken us to Mt. Olive and Rose Hill. Maybe next time. We drove on to New Bern, the landing place of our Kornegay ancestor. I was surprised to find that they pronounce New Bern with the emphasis on the "New", basically like it was one word "Newbern". The old historic district of New Bern is fascinating! It's like a little Savannah or Charleston. I wish we hadn't had that Saturday deadline to get to my son's house in SC, but my granddaughter's fourth birthday's won't wait! Anyway, I just wanted to say, I have made my pilgrimage, now. Matt Ward (gggggrandson of Capt. Jacob Kornegay through his daughter, Rockalena (Roxie Laney) and John Ward.

    3. My father, Curtis Kornegay, has obtained a journal dating from the 1880's with entries by RICHARD HENRY KORNEGAY born August 30, 1854 son of WILLIAM Kornegay and Susan Winders, grandson of HARGETT Kornegay and Susanna Simmons (ISAAC4, WILLIAM3, GEORGE2, JOHN GEORGE1). In this journal are recorded business transactions, purchases and travel expenses. There is an entry where he purchased a bed and various bedding items from the estate of his grandmother Susanna Simmons (widow of Hargett Kornegay,Sr.) in 1881. Among his grocery list were an occasional entry for "beer" and "whiskey". He also had notes from a sermon with the entry, "In my father's house are many mansions". One of the more interesting pages has written with an old ink pen in excellent handwriting the note: "When this you see, remember me though many miles apart we be." Many miles and 120 years! If anyone would like to see a scanned image of this, I'll be glad to share. I also have a photo of Richard Henry, Email me at [email protected] This journal is remarkable for me because there is an entry where my great great uncle (my father's line) made a purchase from my great great grandfather J.J. Hillin (my mother's line)!!! The journal was graciously given to my father by his sister, Dorothy Kornegay Rockett, who has a wealth of geneology on our family collected over many years. I have gone as far back as my great-grandfather, Thomas Edward Brown who married Henrietta E. Kornegay. They gave birth to my grandfather, Calvin Brown (never had a middle name that I know of), on December 16, 1886 in Gause, Milam Co., TX. Calvin died in Ranger, Eastland Co., TX and is buried along with other family members in the Evergreen Cemetery. He has one son (Calvin Earl Brown) who is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery also located in Ranger, Eastland Co., TX. Please help me break through this brick wall. 3. I would love to go to N.C., I would like to get back to Alabama also. There are so many places that I would like to visit and do research at. I probably do have some relatives in Robeson, It seems like I can remember seeing Robeson in connection with my family somewhere. I have seen very few old Kornegay pictures. I wish we could find more of them too. Take care.
