It isn't often that a man takes his wife's surname, but in the case of my great uncle's sister, Lena Kohl, family lore has it that her husband Charles name was Jones, but because he felt closer to the Kohl family than his own, he took the Kohl name when they married. I have no documentation to substantiate that. Lena Kohl was born about 1870, daughter of John Wolfe Kohl (01 Oct 1846-01 Sep 1927) and Sarah Walpole Kohl (1846-bef.1925). The Kohl family first came to America, arrived in New York City 29 Aug 1845 and then whent to Milwaukee, and later to Washington Co. (Addison Tsp., St. Lawrence, Slinger, Kohlsville) and some move to Wood and Marathon Counties. The 1920 Census for Stratford, Marathon Co., WI shows Charles (age 60) & Lena (age 49) Kohl, and their children, Mildred, 17, Elmer, 14, Walter, 12, Susan, 4, adopted son George, age illegible... may be 12 or 6/12. I would like any information on Charles Jones>Kohl, his birth parents, place of birth, etc. I would estimate his birth year as 1870 or before. Pasted below is a copy of a message I received. Does anyone have any further information they can provide? Judie Cale Nelson ***************** Dear colleagues, I only know that Wilhelm Martin Kohl was born Jan 19, 1920, in Balhorn, Germany, and that he died April 4, 1945, in Kopenhagen as a member of the German occupation troops. His wife (and children) lived in the Bremen , it seems, before they immigrated to the US. The mother always tried to conceal the German identity of the father - was he maybe even a member of the SS troops? Do you have any further information? I am searching for any information on John W. Kohl and Sarah Wallpole, who were the parents of my great uncle Charles Kohl. Charles was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on August 8, 1874 (according to his marriage record). He was married October 21, 1902 to Catharine Weber, daughter of Christian Weber and Anna Kaiser Weber at Webertown, in the Eau Pleine Township of Marathon County, Wisconsin. Charles Kohl died at the Soldiers Home at Milwaukee in November 1929. He was a veteran having served in the army for Uncle Sam during the Spanish-American War, a member of a St. Louis company. Other children of John Kohl and Sarah Wallpole were: Herbert of Washington, Harry of Milwaukee, Frank of Montana, Mrs. Chas. Kohl of Two Rivers and Mrs Clarence Reno of Stratford, Marathon County, Wisconsin. Sarah died when her children were very young, and John remarried to a woman by the name of Jemimia (or something like that). There have been several new researchers subscribe to the KOHL list lately, so maybe it is time for a roll call. Here is my immigrant ancestor: Philipp Jacob KÖHL, b. 17 June 1803, St. Johann now part of Saarbrücken, Saarland, Germany. His parents were Georg Ludwig KÖHL and Anna Margaretha KARCHER. I have traced both the Köhl and Karcher back to the mid 1500's in Germany. Philipp emigrated about 1833 to Ripley Co. IN where he married Elizabeth HAURI/ HOWERY there 19 Dec 1836. They had 12 children. They lived in Morgan Co. IN and then Carver Co. MN where Philipp died in 1870. Philipp changed the spelling of his name to CALE. Judie Cale Nelson List admin
