In Germany, most of them were spelled Köhler, I believe pronounced "coaler". Koehler, would have by the Germany pronuciation rules, with the e last, and the e was pronouced as an "a". However, the traditional way, of americanizing the ö, is oe. I am not an expert, I just spent the night at a holiday inn.
