American Biographical Library The Biographical Cyclopædia of American Women Volume I Daughters of America; or Women of the Century Kohler, Rose Educational Work page 254 KOHLER, ROSE, sculptor and painter, daughter of the Reverend Kaufman and Johanna (Einhorn) Kohler, was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1873. Her father, the son of Moritz and Babette Kohler, was born in Fürth, Bavaria, May 10, 1843, and received the degree of Ph.D. from the University of Erlangen in 1867. In 1869 he was called to Beth E1 Congregation, Detroit, Michigan; became rabbi of the Sinai Congregation, Chicago, in 1871; and from 1879 to 1903 was Minister of Temple Beth El, New York. Since 1903 he has been President of the Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, Ohio. He has been a leader in Reformed Judaism and a writer of many books and articles on Judaism, ethics, and Biblical criticism, as well as Editor of the Departments of Theology and Philosophy of the Jewish Encyclopaedia. In 1870 he married Johanna, daughter of the Reverend Doctor David Einhorn, born in 1848. She was at one time Historian of the Woman's Art Club of Cincinnati, is a member of the Art Committee of the Woman's City Club of Cincinnati, and has been Chairman of the National Committee on Religious Schools of the Council of Jewish Women. Miss Kohler has painted portraits of Mr. L. Rothenberg, Doctor Kohler, Mrs. Kohler, and others, and has executed bas-relief portraits of Doctor Solomon Schechter (1918), and Doctor Kohler (1919). In 1919 she also modelled a pair of book-ends entitled The Talmudic Scholar. One of her most notable sculptures is the bas-relief medallion (1920), The Synagogue, a symbolic [p.255] treatment of the idea expressed in the phrase: "My house shall be called a House of Prayer for all people." This sentence is inscribed upon an arch over the dominating central figure of the Synagogue, allegorically presented as a young woman, crowned and with sceptre, and holding the Scroll of the Law in each hand. At the left of the medallion is a group which represents the Congregation. An old man, his head covered and his shoulders wrapped in the praying shawl, announces the new era on the ram's horn. Before him are children with books who symbolize Instruction. To the right is a group expressive of Worship. Behind the youth in an attitude of prayer stands a pulpit on which is the Seven-Branched Candlestick, the symbol of Light. In the background is a priest with hands raised in benediction and a cantor chanting from a scroll. The whole is strong and well-balanced and the countenances of the figures show faith and trust in the future. In addition to the Woman's Art Club and the Woman's City Club, Miss Kohler is a member of the Three Arts Club and the Crafters of Cincinnati. Leslie

Most of us with some version of this name (Kohler, Koehler, Kahler etc.) should already know the reason for all the different versions and what the name means, but I haven't seen it in any E-mail so far, so just in case a few don't know the origins, here goes for at least the German version of the name: most all of us came from that old country with the name spelled Köhler, complete with the umlaut over the "o". In English, there is no way to pronounce the German "ö", although it sounds a little like "Kurler". (I had a German teacher who told us to make an "o" with our lips and then say "e", and that's the way it should sound). Anyway, our ancestors had to find a way to Anglicise the name, so some just dropped the umlaut, others replaced it with "oe", some substituted an "a" etc. So, now we get pronounced 'Kohler', 'Koler', 'Kayler', 'Kahler' even 'Koyler'. (I'm a 'Kayler').Not sure if those with "n"s or "t"s tacked on are the same root name or not. As for its meaning, I'm told that a Köhler was a man who tended the peat furnaces back in the days of soft coal fuel...köhl being an early word for coal. Does this jibe with what you know about our origins? For the Rootsweb record, I am descended from Heinrich Köhler and wife Katerina Schweinsberger, who lived in either Obersalzbach or Obersulzbach near Gelnhausen in the Grand Duchy of Hesse, some 30 kilometers east of Frankfurt. Two sons, Heinrich (Henry, Jr.born 1828),Caspar(born 1835) and a daughter Katerina(born 1832) came to America sometime in the mid 1800s and settled first in Davenport Iowa, then in St. Louis, Mo. The 'boys' were successful as brewers, operating several breweries in both cities and changed the spelling to "oe". Henry married Ottlie Schlapp in 1857 and produced: Oscar C. who married Matilda Lange...4 kids Ida married Adolph Priester...3 kids Herman unmarried Hugo Arthur married Corinne (?) widow of Max below Paula married Karl Vollmer.. 1 son Karl Max married Corinne .....2 kids Katerina married Ignatz Huber 1854 Davenport IA...3 kids Caspar married Josephine Junge in 1862 in St. Louis,Mo. Amelia "Ellie" married 1.Limberg, 2.Lemp Richard Otto married Edith krausnick Ottilie married Carl Krausnick..1 son Carl Frederick married Clara Wipperman StL..1 son (my father) Julius Henry married Alma Portner...one son. Hi folks, I have a KOEHLER family that I am tracing from Philadelphia PA: Christian KOEHLER b. 12.13.1818 m 11.8.1841 to Wilhemina HENSEL b. 1.21.1824. children: John Herman b. 3.12.1843 d. 1.13.1869 Emma Matilda b. 3.16.1847 d. 2.14.1920 Henry William b. 5.12.1849 d. 5.12.1876 m. Augusta Kaylor Daniel Edward b. 8.11.1851 d. 3.21.1923 m. Eliza Binley Ida Amelia b. 7.26.1853 m. John Watts Benjamin Christian b. 4.4.1855 d. 1.1.1901 m. Clara Kuntz Christian was a Baker and owned a Confectionary shop. I do know that Wilhemina's father ;John Gotleib Hensel, was either a freind or associate of Christian's. I also know that most of their children lived with them after marriage and that Christian often sponsored younger bakers (or relatives?) from Germany to his home to work for him.
