Hi - I'm brand new to the list, so please let me know if I do anything incorrectly. Thanks. I am looking for a Mr./Mrs. Henry Koehler w/two children who were listed as relatives attending my ggrandfather's funeral in Bremer County, Iowa in Oct., 1926. They are identified as being from Chicago. Other relatives names listed are Liser, Shiestel, Bohnen, and Gieb, also from Chicago. They attended the funeral of Joseph Schaefer. Joseph evidently was orginally Catholic, but married a Lutheran lady. He was from Hesse-Nassau, if that has any bearing. No one is alive who remembers where any of these relatives lived except in "Chicago". Joseph Schaefer had a brother, "Jake", at least one sister, Margaret (who married a Liser), and possibly a sister, Elizabeth (Lizzie), who may have married a Gieb. Was there another sister who married a Koehler? A grandaughter does remember meeting the Koehler and Gieb relatives as a small child, but nothing else. I don't even know if there were any children, other than for the Koehler bunch. Any clues here would be more than gratefully accepted. I am trying to determine the county and/or location where any of these people lived. If I can help with any Koehler names here in Bremer County, Iowa (NE Iowa), I will be more than happy to do so. We have some Koehler families still in this area. I have records that go back to 1875 and also, cemetery records, if you have an idea of location. Sorry for the length of this message, but I tried to explain it as best I could. Thank you for any assistance you might be able to provide. Karlyn kdka@netins.net

To the best of my knowledge, none of my Köhler ancestors/relatives came to the USA. Additional research is possible in Remptendorf/Thüringen, but after having written to the parish priest several times, I have yet to receive an answer... All of this Köhler research was done by a cousin of my father's in the late 1930s/early 1940s. Köhler is a relatively common name in Germany, so most all of the various lines are unrelated. If any of you have Köhler ancestors from Remptendorf, though, we're probably related and I would love to hear from you. don ludwig
Dear Deborah! I plan on posting an entry soon on my Köhler ancestors... but I wanted to respond to this Email. You appear to not know the birthdate and birth location of your immigrant ancestor and this should be relatively easy to determine. For you (and anyone else), whose ancestors immigrated to the US in the early 1900s, you have two great resources at your disposal: 1. the National Archives maintains copies of the ship manifests that list all immigrants to the US. You can request a search of the indices and for $10, you can get a copy of the page where your ancestor's name appears. The entry lists the person's age, residence (in Europe), US residence, and often birthplace. After the Immigration Act of 1924 was passed, each immigrant had to apply for an Immigration Visa from the INS. Thus, after 1924, the ship manifest also contains this Visa information. 2. the INS (Immigration & Naturalization Service) maintains records on all immigrants. The INS was founded in 1906, so any naturalizations before that date are not stored there. You can write to the INS and receive copies of the citizenship file for your ancestor, and, for those who immigrated after 1924, you can also get a copy of the Immigration Visa file. EXAMPLE: My grandparents, Karl Ludwig (his mother was a Köhler) and Gertrud Schulz emigrated from Germany in 1925/1926 respectively. My grandmother was born in Schlawe/Pommern and all civil records were destroyed there in 1945 (WWII). When she applied for her visa to the US, she had to submit a birth certificate, and I received a copy of it when I requested her immigrant visa file. Unbelieveable--this was the only source where I was able to get a birth certificate for my grandmother! don ludwig ------------------------------- (Embedded image moved DJKoehler@aol.com to file: 06/23/98 05:18 AM pic22451.pcx) To: KOEHLER-L@rootsweb.com cc: (bcc: Donald Ludwig/AMS/AMSINC) Subject: [KOEHLER-L] KOEHLERs from Hanover Hello all! For 25yrs I have hunted for the parents of Mary Ellen KAYLOR,KALOR or what ever. She was born March of 1824 in Virginia. Census of 1880 she says father born VA , mother PA. On May 14, 1844 in Delaware Co., Ohio she married Elijah Roads, but the name on the marriage was Taylor, not Kaylor. So for 15 years I looked for Taylors before getting her childrens death certificates and seeing the name was Kaylor or several spelling there of. . Mary Ellen died 1899 in Kansas and that was before they started keeping death records here. On the 1850 census Elijah and Mary Ellen were in Clermont Co., Ohio, 1860 McLean Co., IL and 1870 they moved over to Ford Co., IL. Then by 1880 they were in Shawnee Co., KS where Elijah died 1896 and she in 1899. Elijah got a pension from Civil War and so did Mary Ellen after he died. On that it said she had not been married before or after her marriage to Elijah Roads. So, Please help me if you can. Hello everyone, I'm a new list member, my name is Gunner Danneels and I have a line of Kohlers (without the umlaut usually) in my family tree. My research goes back to Fidelis and Agathe Kohler who moved from Wuerttrmberg to the Russian Crimean colony of Katherenental in 1816. Fidelis was born in 1775 in Trochtelfingen (spelling may be much different, I'm going from memory.) They had a son Xaverius, who had a son Michael, who emmigrated to Richardton North Dakota in 1890. If anyone is interested, I have lots of information to share about the Fidelis->Xaverius->Michael line. My information is sketchy about the descendents of the other children of Fidelis and Xaverius after about 1850 and whatever became of the family line in Russia. I would appreciate any help that anyone may have on those lines. I'm particularly interested in information or suggestions about how I would go about locating ancestors of Fidelis and Agathe. Gunner

Just one addition concerning the name itself: Those of us researching in the "new world" should be aware of the difference between the names of Köhler and Keller. Their pronounciaction is quite similar, so their anglicized forms might be the same. They are however distict: Köhler is derived from "coal" while Keller is derived from "cellar". Concerning "my" Köhlers: They all seem to come from Leissling, a small village Weissenfels, soutwest of Leipzig. There still exists a spring called Köhlerquelle ("Quelle" = spring). The village belonged to the Kingdom of Saxony but was later und Prussian authority. It is very close to the border to Saxony-Meiningen. Anybody who has ancestors there, Köhler or not, please contact me. (1) Julius Köhler, born 24-Mar-1835 in Leissling. Julius was one of seven children. (2) Johann Christoph Köhler, father of (1), born 22-Jul-1785 in Leissling, married Johanne Sophie Haberkorn, died 18-Jul-1850. (4) Johann Tobias Köhler, father of (2), born 31-Jan-1754 in Leißling, married Marie Elisabeth Rothe, died 18-Oct-1813. (8) Ehrenfried Köhler, father of (4), probably born in Leissling, married Marie Dorothee Körch. Do you have any records from this area? Regards, Hasko Heinecke

Kansas and Kansans: Volume 5 Mr. Bauman was born in New York City, New York, January 15, 1859, and is a son of Wendelin and Ursula (Kohler) Bauman. His father was born in 1812, in Kippenheim, a suburb of Freiburg, Baden, Germany. America owes to the struggle for more liberal government in central Europe, which culminated, in 1848, in the suppression of the patriots and in the self-expatriation of many of their brilliant leaders, some of her best citizens. The reader will readily recall the names of Gen. Franz Sigel and Carl Schurz as shining examples of these patriots. Wendelin Bauman, a tailor by trade, stood high in the councils of the patriots, was one of the organizers of the revolution, and, as a trusted secret emissary, traveled all through Austria, Prussia, France and Switzerland, making addresses in behalf of the cause and speaking in several languages. When the revolt against the Bavarian government was suppressed through the intervention of Prussia, the patriot forces to which he belonged took refuge in France. When it became evident that the cause in which they had struggled was hopeless, Mr. Bauman, then a man of forty-two years, sought a permanent asylum from political persecution in America. Locating first in New York City, he found employment at his trade as a merchant tailor and remained in that city until 1868, when he removed with his family to Ohio, in which state he resided for three years. In 1871 he came to Neodesha, Kansas, retired because of ill health, and lived here quietly until his death, in January, 1876. He was a republican and a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Mr. Bauman was married in his native place to Ursula Kohler, who was born in May, 1820, at Jungingen, Prussia, Germany, and died December 26, 1907, at Neodesha, Kansas. Their children were four in number, as follows: Franciska, who is the widow of J. G. Winter, a dry goods merchant of Neodesha, and lives at this place; Adolph, of whom more later; August, of this notice; and Caroline, who is the widow of W. C. Spangler, who was vice chancellor of Kansas University, and now makes her home at Lawrence, Kansas. Leslie
