    3. Hi everyone, The Pommerscher Verein Freistadt database at http://www.execpc.com/~pommern/browse.html has many Kahler/Koehler/Kohler names in a searchable database which only shows the name of the father or of the spouse of a person. Pedigree charts are evidently available for a fee ($5.00) if a name you are looking for is found. I assume the names involved are mainly from WISCONSIN or UPPER MIDWEST, but I am not sure. Might be worth a look-see... -- Bob Mittelstadt rdstadt@cts1.internetwis.com -- Researching the surname MITTELSTADT, any spelling (30 known), anytime, anywhere; and just about everyone who ever lived in western Dodge County, Wisconsin, including the KOEHLERs of Lowell Township.

    1. [KOEHLER-L] Koehler/Kaylor in Holmes Co., OH
    2. Hi fellow Koehler researchers - I am including some info on my ancestor Henry Koehler (c.1794 Alsace-1849 Holmes Co. OH), who immigrated to the US about 1829 and initially settled in Yates Co., New York, where he was naturalized. The Henry Koehler family migrated to Holmes County, Ohio in 1835; many Koehler/Kaylor descendants still live in this Holmes/Ashland/Knox/Wayne Co. OH area today. While I still have a good bit of Yates Co. NY research to do, I believe Henry's father was also named Henry Koehler (b.1767, d.1831 Yates Co. NY). I also suspect that Frederick Koehler (1783 Alsace-1840 Yates Co. NY) and Magdalena Koehler Herman (b. c1791 Alsace) are siblings of Henry. The Frederick Koehler and Henry Herman families remained in Potter Twp., Yates Co. NY. Following is a narritive on the Henry Koehler family, which will be included in the Holmes County Ohio History book which will be published this fall. The article is based on research done by several of us Koehler/Kaylor "cousins." I'd be interested in hearing from any of you who might connect to this family! Susan Franks Leininger THE HENRY KOEHLER FAMILY Henry and Magdalana (Sennarhart) Koehler, natives of Alsace, settled in Knox Township, Holmes County, Ohio by December 1835. The Koehler family had immigrated to the United States in 1829, along with the John Charles Hans and Benjamin Wander families. The Koehlers and Wanders initially settled in Yates County, New York, while the Hans family migrated to Lake Township, Wayne County, Ohio (now Ashland County). Nine children were born to Henry and Magdalana Koehler - Michael, Henry, Jacob, George, Magdalana, Ireths, Christian, John, and Fredrick. The family resided in the area of Knox Township known as Kaylor Ridge. After Magdalana's death in 1837, Henry Koehler married Margaret Hans, widow of John Charles Hans. Henry, Magdalana, and Margaret Koehler are all buried at the Kaylor Ridge Cemetery in Knox Township. The Koehler surname was "americanized" by Henry and Magdalana's children and grandchildren in several ways. The more commonly used surnames were Koehler and Kaylor, but different family spellings include Kahler, Kohler, Kayler, and Kaylar. Michael Kaylor, oldest child of Henry and Magdalana Koehler, was born in Alsace in 1818. His wife, Elizabeth Wander, was the daughter of Benjamin Wander, then residing in Jefferson Township, Knox County, Ohio. For the first years of their marriage, Michael and Elizabeth resided in Knox Township, Holmes County; but Michael later purchased a farm in Jefferson Township in Knox County. Michael and Elizabeth's children include Philip Koehler (b. 1847, died in infancy); Sarah Kaylor (b.c1848, m. Samuel Brown); George H. Kaylor (b. 1850, m. Isabella Rice); Benjamin Kaylor (b. 1854, wife Mary); Mary Kaylor; William M. Kaylor (b. 1856, m. Ida Catherine Lafever); Philip Kaylor (b. 1858, m. Ida May Frost); Simon Kaylor (b. 1860, m. Florence Hattie Hess); and Charles M. Kaylor (b. 1868, m. Louvina Workman). Elizabeth Wander Kaylor died in 1893; Michael in 1906. They are buried at the Harding-Hardinger Cemetery, Jefferson Township, Knox County, Ohio. Henry Koehler, second child of Henry and Magdalana Koehler, was born about 1821 in Alsace. He married Mary Ullman in 1849, and farmed in Knox Township, Holmes County. Henry and Mary's children include: Caroline Kaylor (b. 1850); Henry Jacob Koehler (b. 1852, m. Margaret Gairring); Mary Kaylor, Sarah A. Kaylor, George A. Koehler (b. 1859, m. Julia Ann Kiner); Magdalana Kaylor (b. c1863); William F. Kaylor (b. 1865, died in infancy), Martin Kaylor (b. 1868, died in infancy); and Cora A. and Clary Matilda Kaylor (twins, b. 1871). Mary Ullman Koehler died in 1875; Henry in 1890. They are buried at the Kaylor Ridge Cemetery in Knox Township. Jacob Koehler, third child of Henry and Magdalana Koehler, was born in Alsace in 1823. He married Charlotte Hans, daughter of John Charles and Margaret Hans, in 1842. They resided in Knox Township until 1846, when they settled in Lake Township, Ashland County, upon the homestead originally owned by John Charles Hans. Jacob was a distiller for a number of years, then turned to farming in the 1860s. Children of Jacob and Charlotte include Jacob H. Kaylor (b. 1843); George Kaylor (b. 1844, m. Sarah Long); Matilda Kaylor (b. c1848); John Kaylor (b. 1852, m. Sarah Rominger); Daniel Kaylor (b. 1860); Emeline Kaylor; Adam Kaylor; Albert Kaylor (b. c1862); Solomon Kaylor (b. 1863); Charlotte Kaylor (m. Etzwiler); Jonas P. Kaylor (b. 1869); and two children who died in infancy. Charlotte Hans Koehler died in 1890; Jacob in 1905. They are buried at St. John's Cemetery, Lake Township, Ashland County. George Koehler, fourth son of Henry and Magdalana Koehler, was born in Alsace in 1825. His wife was Caroline Hans, another daughter of John Charles and Margaret Hans; George and Caroline married in 1849. They remained in the Kaylor Ridge area, where George was engaged in farming and stock raising. Their children were: John Kaylor (b. 1850, m. Rachel Gray); Barbara Kaylor (b. 1852, m. Zacharia Powelson); Jacob O. Koehler (b. 1854, died in infancy); Margaret Kaylor (b. 1856, m. Sanford Ruble); Sarah H. Kaylor (b. 1858); Lavina Koehler (b. c1862, m. Jacob Spreng); Daniel Kaylor (b. c1863, died in infancy); George William Kaylor (b. 1865, m. Olive Young); Charles Edward Kaylor (b. 1867, m. Lucy Knox); and Cora A. Kaylor (b. c1870, m. Alva Miller). Caroline Hans Koehler died in 1915; George in 1916. They are buried at Kaylor Ridge Cemetery. Magdalana Koehler, daughter of Henry and Magdalana Koehler, was born about 1827 in Alsace. She married Jacob Friermuth in 1842. No additional information is known about Magdalana or the Koehlers' other daughter, Ireths. Christian Koehler, son of Henry and Magdalana Koehler, was born in Yates County, New York in 1829. He married Helena Hans, daughter of John Charles and Margaret Hans, in 1851. Their children were Caroline Kaylor (b. 1855, m. John Shaffer); Daniel Kaylor (b. c1857, m. Elizabeth Schaffer); Helena Kaylor (b. c1859, m. Michael Hoff); Margaret Ann Kaylor (b. c1862, m. Phillip Schaffer); Charles Lewis Kaylor (b. c1865, m. Carrie Lee Hyaat); Sarah Kaylor (b. 1868, m. John Strang); Philip Koehler (b. c1871, m. Grace Foster); William A. Koehler (b. 1874); Emma Kaylor (b. c1879, m. Samuel Jolly); and George Koehler. Helena Hans Koehler died in 1912; Christian in 1915. They are buried at Kaylor Ridge Cemetery. John Kaylor, sixth son of Henry and Magdalana Koehler, was born in 1831 in Yates County, New York; he married Catherine Kettering in 1859. Their children include Henry M. Kaylor (b. 1860, not married); Sarah Helen Kaylor (b. 1861); George M. Kaylor (b. c1869, m. Viola Addy); William A. Kaylor (b. 1876); Adam Franklin Kaylor (b. 1879, m. Bertha Brush); David Otha Kaylor (b. 1882, m. Bertha White); and Callie Kaylor (m. Delbert Figley). Catherine Kettering Kaylor died in 1910; John in 1916. They are buried at the Loudonville Cemetery, Ashland County. ` Fredrick Koehler, the youngest son of Henry and Magdalana Koehler, was born in 1832 in Yates County, New York, and never married. He died in 1884, and is also buried at the Kaylor Ridge Cemetery in Knox Township.

    2. Melissa, I saw your email on KOHLER's (et al) in Ohio in 1840. There were KOHLERs in Montgomery County OH also. From about as early as 1820s. The given names were mostly George John and reverse. If you get a chance to read more, perhaps you can look for these also. Penny

    3. In Germany, most of them were spelled Köhler, I believe pronounced "coaler". Koehler, would have by the Germany pronuciation rules, with the e last, and the e was pronouced as an "a". However, the traditional way, of americanizing the ö, is oe. I am not an expert, I just spent the night at a holiday inn.
