Posted by Sandi Gorin on Wed, 17 Jun 1998 Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. Greetings all, This morning I found this on the web site that lists most of the messages that have gone out on the KY BIOS list. ------------------------------------ MRS. LAURA A. OLDHAM is a native of Henry County, Ky., a daughter of C. M. and Frances M. (Edwards) Mathews. September 22, 1857, she was married to William B. Oldham, of Jefferson County, a son of Pressley and Margaret (KELLER) Oldham. William B. Oldham graduated in medicine in Louisville, Ky., in 1855, and after graduation had charge of the Marine Hospital in Louisville for several years; then moved to Christiansburg, Shelby County, where he remained about two years. He then came to New Castle, Ky., and remained up to the time of his death, which occurred in August, 1878. Five children were born to this union, three living: John, who graduated in medicine in Louisville in 1886 and is now taking a special course under Prof. Reynolds, of Louisville; Frank, who is employed in the New Castle Bank, and Annie, who is at Nicholasville attending school. Dr. Oldham was considered one of the finest surgeons in the State of Kentucky, and was a close student. As a citizen he was popular, companionable, public spirited, and enjoyed the respect and confidence of all who knew him. Mrs. Oldham is comfortably situated in New Castle, and also owns 100 acres of land near new Castle. She is distinguished for her beauty and many fine qualities.

Prominent Men of West Virginia. [p.748] WILLIAM HENRY CURRY. DR. W. H. Curry was born in Baltimore county, Maryland. His father, Kean Curry, was of Scotch descent, and possessed in a large measure the strong, sturdy characteristics of the race. He was especially noted for his benevolence, unflinching loyalty to principle, insatiable love for books, and remarkable powers in debate. On his mother's side he is descended from the old Pennsylvania family of **KOHLER**, who were among the early German settlers of that State. She was a gentle, amiable woman, devoted to her family, and found her highest gratification in rearing and training their childrentwelve in numberall of whom she lived to see reach man and womanhood, and settled in useful pursuits. Doctor Curry inherited little of the strong physical traits of his parents, being slight and frail from childhood. He early showed, however, a special fondness for study, and his parents indulged the bent of his mind as far as their means would allow and the nearest schools afford. These did not satisfy his thirst for knowledge, and at fifteen years of age he was working on neighboring farms to earn the means to continue his education. His savings were supplemented by some aid from his parents, and he was thus enabled to take a course of study in one of the best classical schools in Pennsylvania. At eighteen he began teaching, and continued to do so for several years, when failing health necessitated a change. He then began the study of medicine, at the University of Maryland, and graduated with great credit at the end of the prescribed course. The condition of his health was so impaired at this time that he gratefully accepted an offer in the Regular Army, with service on the frontier, and remained therein as Assistant Surgeon until the fall of 1866, when he resigned and entered upon private practice in the city of Baltimore. He continued to practice there until 1875, when his health again gave way and he was obliged to abandon his profession entirely.

Hello to all, I am researching my Koehler and Kohler family. I have two brothers that came from Bavaria. Don't have the exact time period when they came to the US, but I have the time period when they were born. I have a Michael J. Koehler (GG Grandfather) born Jan 24, 1843 in Bavaria. He came to the US and settled in Piqua, Ohio. He married Mary Britsch or Bruetch of Piqua. to this union they had three sons. Baltasar Ambrose, Edward, and Matthew. Michael died April 6, 1906 in Lima, Ohio. Mary died June 1930. Ambrose changed the last name to Kohler. Ambrose (G Grandfather) was born Jan 24, 1876 in Piqua, OH. He married Clara Della Gastinger. They had two sons and one daughter: John Francis Mather (Grandfather), Clinton (Died after a few months), and Pauline. Pauline married Jack Mayberry in Columbus, OH. Michael's brother also came to the US about the same time. He was born 1841 in Bavaria. Do not know too much about him. Last that was heard of him was that he was living in Dayton, Ohio. If anyone has any connection to this family please write. George Custer Kohler http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/k/o/h/George-C-Kohler/

To All, I am new to this list and need assistance on my KOHLER line in Lehigh (then Norhampton) County during the 1700's. Specifically, I am interested in finding the names of the parents/siblings of George Kohler whose Last Will is dated 1775. In it, he names his sisters and nephews. One of his sisters was "Margaret". He left an equal amount to a George Frantz, son of Jacob Frantz. I have been looking for the maiden name of Jacob Frantz's wife for years and I would appreciate any assistance. I would be more than happy to reciprocate. Regards to all, Nancy in Sea Bright, NJ
