The only connection I have with the Knowlden family of Deptford, London is:- a marriage of Matthew Munday and Amelia (nee Knowldo(e)n possibly in Deptford about 1836/7, but have not as yet found the marriage. - Their children: Mathew James - Emily Amelia (my Gt/Grandmother) and Phoebe - all above baptised St.Paul, Deptford 13 April 1845 together... 1841 Census - Ref. HO 107 488 - 18 Victory Street, Deptford Ann Knowlden 20 Needle Worker Matthew Munday 20 Bricklayer Amelia 15 Needleworker Emily 4m Plus 2 Servants. Elizabeth Fairway, and Harriet Turner I presume that Ann Knowlden (20) would be sister of Amelia. ---------------------------------- My Gt.Grandmother was born 5 February 1841 at Victory St.:( St,.Paul, Deptford) Emily Amelia - dau. of Matthew Munday Bricklayer, and Amelia Munday (nee Knowlden) Birth registered 15 March, 1841.. As to the spelling of the name - please see 'Dictionary of Welsh and English Surnames... If you cannot obtain this herewith gist of it.... Knowlton, Knowlden 'Local' of Knowlton' a parish in Co.Kent. There appears to be little doubt that Knowlden is a lazily pronounced variant. Knowlton has flourished for some time in the United States. The two following Kentish entries are strongly conclusive of the view that Knowlden is a variant of Knowlton 1658 - Married Thomas Godfrey and Anne Knowlden - Canterbury Cathedral 1665 Married John Smyth and Mary Knolden 1776 Married William Knowlton and Mary Howse St.George, Hanover Square, London 1799 Married Francis Knowlton and Sarah Widley =============== I have a copy of a marriage at St.Mary, Lewisham, London - 30thAugust, 1812 Gilbert James KNOWLDEN and Ann Elizabeth Callaghan ( both had good signatures) It appears that Gilbert James was of St.Mary, Magdalen, Bermonsey, Surrey and Ann Elizabeth was of St.Paul, Deptford Their children: Martha Bapt. 14/11/1813, St.Paul, Deptford James William Bapt 17/9/1815 " Amelia Elizabeth Bapt. 31/3/1822 St.Paul, Deptford (I am not sure if she belongs to my family) CanterburyCathedral 13 May 1738 Abraham Raysell of Sittingbourne (Kent) and Ann Knowlden of Newington, next Sittingbourne (by Licence) 27 June 1744 Edward Warner of Borden, and Ann Knowlden of Newington, next Sittingbourne (by Licence) St.Alphage, Kent, Canterbury Knowlden 1 October 1694 John Knowlden and Mary Dawson (by Licence) I hope the above helps in your quest.
