    3. Sheri, This is my research on John Knowlton. It is based upon Stocking and research in the Ipswich town records. 3. John (2) and Marjery Wilson: a. John (5) b. 1633 at Ipswich or Hingham, MA, m. (1st) Deborah (surname perhaps Grant) ca. 1655 at Ipswich, MA, (2nd) Sarah ______ ca. 1667 at either Wenham or Ipswich, MA, d. 10/8/1684 at Ipswich, MA b. Abraham b. 1635, d. before 1688; occupation soldier c. Elizabeth b. 1639, d. before 1688 John was a shoemaker, settled in Ipswich in 1639, became freeman 6/2/1641, and died abt. 1654. Before a member of society (male only, of course!) could exercise the right of suffrage or hold public office, he had to be made a "freeman" by the general or quarterly court. To become such, he was required to produce evidence that he was a respectable member of the Congregational Church and take an oath. In 1652, John was appointed to "search and scale leather", that no unmarketable leather might be sold by any tanner of hides. Marjery also died abt. 1654 (both of their wills were dated 1653 and proved in 1654). 4. John (5) and (1st) Deborah Grant?, (2nd) Sarah _________: a. John b. abt. 1656 at Ipswich, MA, m. Sarah _________ b. Nathaniel (19) b. 6/29/1658 at Ipswich, Essex County, MA, m. Deborah Jewett of Rowley, MA 5/3/1682, d. 9/24/1726 at Ipswich, MA c. Elizabeth b. 3/1/1659 at Ipswich, MA, m. Timothy Dorman of Topsfield, MA 11/15/1688 d. Thomas b. 5/19/1662 at Ipswich, MA, m. (1st) Margery Goodhue of Ipswich, MA, (2nd) Mary Coy of Beverly, MA e. Catherine b. 1668 at Ipswich, MA f. Deborah b. 1670? at Ipswich, MA g. Robert b. 1672 at Ipswich, MA; occupation soldier h. Suzannah b. 8/15/1673 at Ipswich, MA i. Ephraim b. 1676 at Ipswich, MA j. Abraham b. 1678 at Ipswich, MA k. Ezekiel b. 1 or 2/1679 at Ipswich, MA John was a shoemaker, also residing in Ipswich, and, during King Philip's War, was drafted into the Narragansett Winter Campaign (Major Samuel Appleton's Company) on 11/30/1675. According to Stocking he was a man of substance, being a public official and involved in many real estate transactions. Admitted freeman 10/13/1680. John removed from Ipswich to Wenham probably abt. 1666; he had a seat in the meetinghouse there in 1669 and d. 10/8/1684. Deborah d. after 1666 and Sarah d. 2/3/1679. John and his second wife, Sarah, must have moved back to Ipswich, as they both died there. There is no evidence that his second wife was a "Whipple". I see that many others have John KNOWLTON b. abt. 1633 married to many women including Debra Grant and a Sarah who some think is Sarah Whipple. I also trust your work as to who the children belonged to. I already had their names but not all of their spouses and I had a daughter Deborah listed for Debra Grant without a birth date. This I had picked up before from other researchers. Not sure where they got the information. Did John really marrying all of these women? I know that you are a very competent researcher so I trust your data. What does Stockings say? Thanks, Sheri " --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Check out the new Yahoo! 3. Thanks Clyde for your imput. Arrived back in Mexico after a wonderful month of research but that wasn't enough to follow up on all the information I wanted to gather. I drove over 5,000 miles from Texas to New York stopping where possible to fill in data fabout my family. I do have to rely a lot on wonderful people like yourself who are willing to share your personal research. I want to get it right. By the way can you explain a little what was involved in the Narragansett Winter Campaign. I recently read a novel by the ggggrandson son of a minisiter who translated the Bible into the Narragansett language to the "praying Indians" and a lot was mentioned about the wars during the 1700's. Thanks again, Sheri Burk Vanderbrouk <rpckvv@swbell.net> wrote: Sheri, This is my research on John Knowlton. It is based upon Stocking and research in the Ipswich town records.
