Hi Carlisle, I can take things back to point. I'm in the process of collecting additional info to send to Paula. I'm not surprised you didn't find them in Stocking - Elizabeth had checked for me once and not found them. James Alanson KNOWLTON had an older sister Mabel Frances KNOWLTON, born 10 November 1884, most likely in Plainwell, Allegan, MI. She married Harry DELAMATER or DELAMARTER. They remained in Michigan. He had a younger brother Robert Melvin KNOWLTON, born 9 January 1890 in Mackinaw City, Cheyboygan, MI. Hew as married twice and also moved to Northern California. Alanson Lacy KNOWLTON was born 13 November 1856 in Washington, Erie County, Pennsylvania. His older sister Lucena (25 November 1853) and younger brother Melvin (11 December 1860) were born in Belfast, Allegany County, NY. It's likely that he was named for Alanson LACY, son of Elnathan and Nancy (HORTON) LACY and husband of his aunt Sarah Ann KNOWLTON. The LACY's lived in Wyoming County, NY. Sarah was the oldest of 8 children. She was born 16 December 1817 in Mendon, Ontario, NY. Alanson Lacy KNOWLTON's parents were James Palmer KNOWLTON and Mary Frances HART. James was born 6 December 1823 in Freedom, Cattaraugus, NY. On 1 July 1852, he married Mary Frances HART in Belvidere, Allegany, NY. Mary was born 7 November 1830 in Groton, Tompkins, NY. Her parents were Andrew Stout and Florina H. (WHIPPLE) HART. Mary is also my great-grandaunt. In addition to Sarah, James Palmer KNOWLTON's other siblings were Rachel R. (1819-1838), William A. (1821-after 1866), Calista (1827-), Mary B. (1830-), John A. (1832-1892), and Marcus (1835-). Sarah, Rachel, and William were born in Mendon, the rest were born in Freedom. I don't know too much more about his siblings. John A. KNOWLTON married Ursula STEARNS, daughter of Squire and Lydia (SCOTT) STEARNS. They also ended up in Michigan. In the 1850 Census in Amity, Allegany, NY he was working as a farm laborer on the farm of Chauncey and Katurah (STOUT) STEARNS. Chauncey was Ursula's brother; Katurah a 1st cousin of Mary Frances (HART) KNOWLTON I'm also trying to prove that Calista KNOWLTON is the same Calista KNOWLTON that married Gordon STOUT. Gordon was Katurah's brother. The 1900 Census gives October 1826 as her birthdate, while the records from my cousin give 13 August 1827. It's close enough. I've known the 1900 Census birthdate's to be wrong before. It all depends on who gave the information and what the Census heard and wrote down. The parents of these folks are John KNOWLTON and Esther HICKS. John was born 18 February 1796 and died 29 February 1844 in Portage Falls, Allegany (now Wyoming, I think), NY. Esther was born 31 January 1793 and died 19 April 1866 in Belfast, Allegany, NY. They were married 27 February 1815. According to my cousin's information, John and Sarah were both in New York City. I find that puzzling because the 1850 Census gives Vermont as her birthplace; the 1860 Census states New York. I hope this helps.
