    1. [KNOWLTON] fishing again...

    3. I guess I am sorta stuck in a quandry. I have a Revolutionary (and War of 1812) Knowlton ancestor, Robert Knowlton (abt 1748-abt 1839), but can't seem to prove his parents. Stocking consistently is inconsistent on sorting out which Robert Knowlton is which, so is of little help, and I don't know where to look for primary source material since he seems to have moved at least a few times, and I am not the least bit familiar with the New England area. I have this one lone line that goes that direction. Ask me a question about Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky and southern Indiana, or better yet, German immigration in the mid 19th century (esp. ships traveling from Bremen to Baltimore with tons of immigrants from the "Kahlgrund" in Bavaria), and I can help you. Massachusetts? Vermont?? New York??? Where's that???? Many of my ancestors and relatives would have referred to them as "D___ Yankees" or worse. So I will again make my plea for anybody who may have information leading to the capture of one Robert Knowlton. Further information follows... Patrick Descendants of Robert KNOWLTON - 7 Feb 2004 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- First Generation 1. Robert KNOWLTON was born in 1748. He died in 1839 in Mercer Co., OH. He served in the Revolutionary War. He may be the son of Andrew Knowlton and Abigail Stone, and then again, he may not be. He may be the Robert Knowlton in the 1790 Census of Woodstock, Windsor Co., VT: Knowlton, Robert 1 male over 16, 4 males under 16, 2 females, 7 total people in household He appears in the 1820 Census of Meigs Co., OH with his son Chauncey, aged 45+. He appears in the 1830 Census of Athens Co., OH with his son Daniel, aged 70-80. The following is most of the text of an e-mail that I sent to the Knowlton listserve, 5-23-98: I don't know a lot about the Knowlton family, it's a family that I have only just begun to research, so bear with me as I muddle through this. My great great grandfather was John J. Hays (1837-1901) who lived most of his life in Blackford Co., IN. He was a son of Henry Hays (who died relatively early) and Lucinda Knowlton. Henry and Lucinda were married in Washington Co., OH in 1825. After much searching and sorting, I have come to the conclusion by process of elimination that she is almost certainly the daughter of William Knowlton (1777-1828 bur. Rinard Mills, Monroe Co., OH) and his first wife, Eunice McVay (1783-1824). William Knowlton first appeared in Washington Co., OH before 1810. According to the biographical sketch (1882, Monroe Co., OH) of John Knowlton (1803-1883), William Knowlton was born in Vermont and was a son of Robert Knowlton, who fought in the Rev. War. In nearby Athens and Meigs Co., Oh there was a Robert Knowlton who was a Rev. War vet living with his son Chauncey. This Robert Knowlton died in about 1839 in or around Mercer Co., OH. The children of Chauncey went on to South Bend, IN and Iowa among other places. This family appears in Stocking. Chauncey is #595 and Robert is #284, but there are some problems. If Stocking (or even the addenda) was correct, William 599 Knowlton who married Barbara Ritz would have been the son of Robert 284 Knowlton. This is not very likely since William 599 was born in about 1838, when Robert 284 was a very old man (about 95 years old using Stockings date for his birth). William 599 it turns out is actually the SON of Chauncey 595. I have tracked most of the children of Chauncey down, and with this sole exception, Stocking seems to be accurate to this point. Robert 284 Knowlton, father of Chauncey had a pension from the Rev. War (#S41734). In his pension application, he claims that he enlisted as a private on May 1, 1775 at Bedford, MA under Capt. Thomas Kempton and Col. Danielson. He was discharged in February 1776. He enlisted again into Capt. Noah Hull's company in Col. Aaron Willard's regiment in Spring 1776. And was discharged again (no date given). He enlisted yet a third time at Bedford, MA into Capt. Nathaniel Jarvis' company in Col. Henry Jackson's regiment and served for three years. This matches, for the most part with the records cited in the massive Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War (vol.IX, KAB-LSU) for "Robert Knowlton of Dartmouth" and "Robert Knowlton of Yarmouth (or Dartmouth)", which has much more detail about his movements in the war. Also according to this pension application he served in the War of 1812. He volunteered at age 65 in 1813 as a sharpshooter and served for 14 months in Capt. John Lyte's company, First U. S. Rifle Regiment. During this time he apparently lived in Sackett's Harbor, NY. He first applied for pension in 1818 as a resident of Athens Co., OH. Stocking says this about Robert 284 Knowlton: "Robert was a sailor. He removed from Mechias, Me., to Vermont , and engaged in farming. He served in the Revolutionary War, in Captain Allin's company, Colonel Bradford's regiment, having enlisted for the whole war. He also served in the War of 1812. He married at, or near, Sackett's Harbor, N. Y., and removed west." According to the Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War (vol.IX, KAB-LSU), this matches up with a "Robert Knowlton of Machias". Unless Robert Knowlton was into magic and could be two places at once, this is a different man! The Robert Knowlton who had the children attributed to Robert 284 was not from Machias,. ME. In the 1850 census of Athens Co., OH there appears Daniel Knowlton (presumably Stocking #598) aged 68, born in Vermont. IN the 1850 census of Delaware Co., OH there appears Lydia McGeorge (Stocking 597) age 50 also born in Vermont. Chauncey and Robert Knowlton did not appear in Washington Co., OH until after 1810 (likely 1818). The first two children of Chauncey were born in New York in 1815 and 1817. Robert was in Athens Co., OH in 1818. In 1820 he probably appeared in the census of Meigs Co., OH in the home of Chauncey. Robert Knowlton probably also appeared in the 1790 census of Vermont in Woodstock, Windsor Co, with 4 boys under the age of 16 (William, Chauncey, Daniel and Levi??). Robert 284 Knowlton is listed in Stocking and addenda as being born on May 26, 1743, and son of Andrew 139 Knowlton and Abigail Stone. He is supposed to have married a Perry and a Pratt. According to the marriage records of the town of Rochester, MA, Robert Nolton, of Dartmouth married Rachel Perry of Rochester on May 17, 1777. This is a bit unusual, since there were no other records of Knowlton's in Dartmouth (or Rochester) according to the vital statistics, and there was no records of a birth for Rachel Perry in Rochester (or Dartmouth). However, "Robert Knowlton of Dartmouth" is also the man who fought in the Rev. War and removed to Ohio. During May 1777 he was not busy serving in the war. He enlisted for his third tour on June 25, 1777. However, in another unusual twist, William Knowlton of Washington and Monroe Cos., OH who was presumably his son was born on June 3, 1777, a mere two weeks after he married Rachel Perry. As luck would have it he was NOT away at war nine months prior to this birth. However, why would he wait until the last minute to marry Rachel, if she was pregnant, and why would he go off to war again so soon thereafter. The birth of William does not appear in Dartmouth, Rochester or any other MA vital statistics that I have seen. Supposedly he was born in Vermont. Was the Robert Knowlton who went to Ohio the son of Andrew Knowlton and Abigail Stone, or was the Robert Knowlton who was from Machias, ME their son??? There are other Robert Knowltons in Stocking and Errata that come into question along these same lines. On p. 580, the list of Robert Knowltons who fought in the Rev. is totally identified in the Errata except for Robert Knowlton of Dartmouth. This is likely the man who married Rachel Perry and is most certainly the man who ended up in Ohio. On p. 588, Robert Knowlton, Pension 44485 served in the exact same company as Amos 381 Knowlton. Stocking has a brother Robert 386 for Amos 381, however, he supposedly changed his name to Rogers according to Stocking and Errata. On p. 53 Robert 476 Knowlton is not accounted for as far as descendants are concerned. He was born on February 6, 1748. Robert Knowlton of Dartmouth and Ohio was 70 in 1818, which comes out to 1748 (as opposed to Robert 284 Knowlton who was born in 1743). Abraham 237 Knowlton, uncle of Robert 476, had a son named Amasa. This is a uncommon derivative of Amos. Chauncey, son of Robert of Dartmouth and Ohio, also had a son Amasa. Robert KNOWLTON and Rachel PERRY were married on 17 May 1777 in Rochester, Plymouth Co., MA. Rachel PERRY. Robert KNOWLTON and Rachel PERRY had the following children: +2 i. William KNOWLTON (born on 3 Jun 1777). +3 ii. Daniel KNOWLTON (born in 1782). +4 iii. Chauncey KNOWLTON (born between 1790 and 1794). 5 iv. Levi KNOWLTON. 6 v. Sophia KNOWLTON. 7 vi.
