Bill, I have located this Lyman on the 1850 census in Collins, Erie co, with wife Lucy and son Jared P Knowlton. I believe him to be #5091 in Stocking as in 1860 in Dayton, Cattaraugus co, NY, he and Lucy and Geo and Willie (little Jared has apparently died) are living with an old man named Jared Knowlton, aged 62, b NY, who appears in Stocking as Lyman's father. In 1850 this Jared is in Collins also, a woolen manufacturer, 51, with Charlotte, 46. I would guess him to be #2534 who married Charlotte Burright. The family came from Troy, NY. This Jared is not the Jared of Bill Allen's ancestry who only briefly crossed NY state on his way to Portage co, OH. However, another of you has laid out a family history of Roswells and Jareds from Belchertown, MA, and I believe this Jared is more closely related to them. (But all are probably descended from same 18th c Jared in CT.) Nor is this Lyman the one I am researching, #1154, who was probably born in Saratoga Co, lived 1797-1882. I have located him in Oneida Co, Utica, in 1830; Syracuse, Onondaga co, in 1850 (wife Sarah, children Lyman and Hellen), occupation, waggonry; and then finally as Lyman Nolton with his daughter Hellen L. Leland and family in Cleveland, OH, in 1880. The man has escaped me in 1840, 1860, and 1870.
