    3. Thank you, Marilyn, I do have the census work done and know that the old man is Daniel Knowlton (458) living in the household of his son Thomas. He dies in 1838 according to the journal of Richard Woolsey. I have seen Voughts in the area but am not quite following your two snippets. Where does Leander come in? If I am understanding what you say, your Leander/Henry line was traced from western NY direct to NH. Were there two Leanders, one in Orange county? I have a listing of children for Thomas (who married two Earl sisters) but have no idea of the other siblings of Thomas. Thanks, Elizabeth Message text written by INTERNET:KNOWLTON-L@rootsweb.com >Elizabeth, I was cleaning up old e-mails and ran across this one that had been sent to me by a Orange and Westchester County researcher who had been a great help to me on my Voughts. He knew about my great grandmother Vought being a daughter of Leander Knowlton and of my search for Leander Knowlton's father Henry Knowlton. I had no need to follow up on this because my Knowlton's ended up in western NY after migrating from NH. Knowing you Elizabeth, you probably already have the 1830 census for Thomas Knowlton. Thought I'd send it on just in case you did not. 3. Elizabeth, My snipets were just to explain why Tom knew my great grandmother was both a Knowlton and a Vought. Tom also knew that I was unable to find where Leander W. Knowlton's parents died and were buried. My great grandmother Hattie Lenore Christian Knowlton b. 1863 descended from both Vought and Knowlton lines. Then she married her cousin George Vought. Twelve years after George died she married his brother Wm Henry who was also widowed and together they raised several of their grandchildren after their own children had died. My Voughts were from the Peekskill area and then migrated to other areas of NY before migrating west. Leander Knowlton's parents Henry Knowlton II b: September 20, 1778 and his wife Rebecca Southwick are my brick walls. They may have died in Western, NY before 1850 because so many of their children were living in that area. Leander married Maryette Christian Vought and Maryette's brother William Jackson Vought was the father of Hattie Knowlton's first and second husbands. To complicate things even more Hattie and George Vought's daughter Gladys married George's sister Sarahette's son Wm Dymond. It makes a very complicated family tree. I found in my great grandmother Hattie Vought's things a yellowed brittle scrap of paper that states..... This may certify, to all whom it may appear or concern that , I have this day married Leander W Knowlton of the town of Victory, to Miss Maryette Vought of the town of Butler, according to the Laws of the State of New York. I have a few (not my direct line) connections to the Earl surname in my data. Portrait and Biographical record of Orange Co. by Chapman Vol.3 pg. 1481 Elam Earl was born on a farm adjoining his present homestead, and spent his entire life in this vicinity, following agriculture for his occupation. In his youth he attended the district schools at Bakertown and Highland Mills, but his educational advantages were very meager, and his knowledge was mainly acquired by self culture. Unto his, marriage seven children were born, namely Elizabeth, Mrs Jacob Blaheny, deceased, formerly of New York City, and who had four sons in the war; Mehitable; Mary, deceased, wife of Simon Howell of Blooming Grove: Rachel, who married Charles Mapes, of Monroe; Nathaniel, who resides on a farm between Highland Mills and central Valley; Matilda, whose first husband was Charles Peters, and her second Henry Mapes; and Peter who married Hannah Conklin and is now deceased. Peter Earl born on May 19, 1830, died on October 18, 1881. Peter Earl's life work was agriculture, he owned a large part of Schunnemunk Mountain known as the Benton Brooks tract upon which he spent many a day hunting the game that abounded there. My connection to Earl is 1 James Clark Sr. b: February 19, 1790 in Orange Co., New York d: April 26, 1872 in Orange Co., New York .. +Catherine (Katie) Christian Vought b: November 30, 1805 d: November 20, 1896 Catherine Vought was a sister in law to Elam Earl.
