Marcia, Since Martha has answered your question concerning Wiram L. Knowlton's parentage, here's some information for you, and others who might be interested, about Judge Wiram Knowlton: Wiram Knowlton, b. Jan 24, 1816 in Smithville, Chenango, NY to Ephraim Hiram Baker Knowlton and Anna Lepper. Moved to Janesville, Rock, WI ca. 1837 along with his parents and five brothers. Moved to Prairie Du Chien, Crawford, WI in 1840. Served on the Territorial Council from 1844-1846. At the beginning of the Mexican War, he raised a company of volunteers who were assigned to attached frontier duty, and served as Captain and commander of Fort Crawford, WI . In 1850, he was elected circuit judge for the 6th Judicial District of WI. As circuit judge, he also served as a justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court until a separate Supreme Court was formed in 1853. He served as a circuit judge until 1856. Wiram Knowlton died June 27, 1863 in Menekaunee, Oconto, WI at the age of 47. He never married or had children. You may have come across a Wiram A. Knowlton, born in WI, in the California censuses for the same time period. That Wiram is the son of Judge Wiram's brother, John Barlett Knowlton. Since Wiram was a brother to my ggg-grandfather, Aratus K. Knowlton (and an interesting character), I have lots more information, if anyone needs it. Kari Flodin
