OK, all you Knowltons who are always talking about Timothys and Merryfields and Ephraim and Ruth Nolton of Wrentham, MA [ERRATA, p 150], we need some help. Carlisle and I are trying to help a woman in Minnesota who can trace a Knowlton line from that state back through Wisconsin and New York to John A. Knowlton, born 1802 or 1801 in Rhode Island. He named his first child Charles R. Knowlton. He moved back and forth across the MA/RI border before leaving for good for points west after 1850. He is on the 1830 Wrentham census with his first two children (all the rest were girls). I have not found him in 1840. In 1850 his wife with daughters and his married son Charles are in Walpole, MA. I don't know where he is unless he is the James Knowlton in Allegany Co, NY, where the family was in 1855 (have not seen this myself). JAK was married to Eliza Wood. Surnames of his daughter- and sons-in-law are Rhodes, Smith, Guild, Whipple (twice), Tatro, Bennet, and Van Gilder. Things are nicely documented 1850 forward. It is the old MA and RI stuff that needs help. Based on children and births, I can guess that JAK was in: 1802 RI 1826 RI 1829 MA 1830 Wrentham, Norfolk Co, MA 1831 MA? 1833 RI 1835 RI 1850 Walpole, Norfolk Co, MA I would not be surprised if JAK's father were not Charles. There is a Charles Knowlton in 1810 in Needham, Norfolk Co, MA, but nobody put any strokes in the people columns; perhaps Charles was in the household of someone else. Someone has stated that his parents were Grant and Marjorie or Abigail-- no source given. This cannot be the Grant born in 1753 to Ephraim and Ruth and who moved to the Carolinas and had a wife Frances. Elizabeth W. Knowlton
