I am a direct descendant of Daniel Knowlton & Ruth Holdren-Knowlton, of Athens County, Ohio. As a child I use to play in a old cemetery near the town where I was raised (Albany, Ohio) I use to call it the Knowlton Grave Yard, because most of the grave stones were for Knowlton's. Recently one of my cousins found a head stone for Ruth Holdren-Knowlton. While cleaning up around the grave stone she found what she thought at first was a large rock. As she dug, she realized it was a head stone. After trying many different things, such as rubbings and such, we still could not make out what the stone said. The historical society suggested that we take shaving cream and layer it on thick across the front of the stone. Then take a flat edge ruler and scrape it away. The shaving cream showed up enough in the indentations that we were able to read the stone. Finally!!!! Daniel Knowlton's grave has been found. If anyo! n! >e would like to go to this cemetery, please contact me. I live in Virginia now, but all of my family are still in Ohio and I go back often. There are several Knowltons buried there and you may find someone you have been trying to find. :) > >Geana Knowlton-Conti > > >============================== >To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: >http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > > > >

    2. Replying to Margaret Stephens' query: I can't help except to say that a Benjamin Knowlton of Rowe did actually marry a Betsey Grant of Buckland. Marriage: Benjamin Knowlton of Rowe and Betsey Grant (Elizabeth int. p.r. 41) of Buckland, Sept 17, 1798 c.r.1 (=First Congregational Church). Gill, Mass. v.r. pg 85 (G) and Buckland, Mass. v.r. pg 85 (G)) (Mass. Archives) (note: Buckland - Apr. 14, 1779 the plantation called no-town and part of Charlemont.; pop. 1790 - 718; 1800 - 1041.) If two wives left him, he apparently wasn't a very nice person. In my opinion, Stocking tried to present a positive representation of the family, and was vague about some individuals intentionally, due to their possible not conforming behavior. I marvel at Stockings ability to keep it all as straight as he did, I have a computer helping me and I still get very muddled at times. Keep us posted of your progress. Marcia *****

Or am I mis- understanding you? I suggest you post a new message (see top) and title it Herbert P. Knowlton, b. ca. and fill in an approximate birth date. One can always guess when someone was born. Take your father's birth year and subtract 30 years. Then write your own message. Someone may recognize his name right away if it is in the subject line. You know he lived in Wisconsin (where?) and about when he was born. What was his wife's name, his children, and anything else you know about him? Where he lived when? When he died? From your email I can't even check a census. There were 32 Knowlton households in Wisconsin in 1910. We promise to help. Are you willing to work at this? I will answer both emails here. If our surname is Knowlton, we are not direct descendants of Thomas Knowlton of the Am Rev as apparently he left no male line. We are all related to him in some way, however. A number of Knowltons went to Canada after the Revolution and did found a community there in Quebec right over the border. I have visited.

Had possibly three brothers and a sister and remember seeing a grave stone picture shot in Wisconsin. He may have been from Mass. in his early childhood and remember that he often ate beans and a special bread. I remember that my stepgrandmother said that he was directly related to Thomas Knowlton at Breeds Hill battle at the start of the Revolution. Some family member migrated to Canada and founded a town of Knowllton so said a high government official who had hotel contacts call him when there was a Knowlton there. He gave her a good tour of the Capitol.

And if so, how?< Kathleen, Sorry, I am an archivist: when I say people stayed in Ipswich, I mean for the first couple of hundred years. What people did in 1920 is so recent by my lights and so well-documented that I don't think of it at all. No, my line left Ipswich [the Ur-city for Knowltons] about 1700, that is, Ephraim Knowlton (ca. 1676-ca 1735), for metro-NYC where they remained until 1920, when they went to NJ. Well, that is metro also. My father is still there. Since the 1960s, however, we are scattered to the winds. Elizabeth W. Knowlton
