I had only: 1. Seth1 Knowlton was born on 5 Aug 1784. Seth Knowlton married Jerusha Lewis in a ceremony performed by James Walker, a justice of the peace, on 26 Mar 1818 in Bridgewater, Windsor Co., Vermont. Seth Knowlton died on 24 Sep 1857 at age 73. He was a merchant according to his marriage record on 26 Mar 1818. He moved to Malone, Franklin Co., New York. Seth Knowlton and Jerusha Knowlton appeared on the 1850 census enumerated 30 Aug 1850 in Malone, Franklin Co., New York . Seth Knoulton was a 61-year-old farmer, born in Vermont and owning real property worth $1000. Jerusha was 50, born in Vermont, as was George N. (23), who is described as a farmer. Also enumerated in the household were Charles N. (22), Adeline (20), Elmira (16), Janette (13), and Oren (9), all born in New York. Adeline, Janette, and Oren had attended school that year. Jerusha Lewis was born circa 1800 in Vermont. Children of Seth1 Knowlton and Jerusha Lewis were as follows: 2 i. George N.2 Knowlton was born circa 1827 in Vermont. 3 ii. Charles N. Knowlton was born circa 1828 in New York. 4 iii. Adeline Knowlton was born circa 1830 in New York. 5 iv. Elmira Knowlton was born circa 1834 in New York. 6 v. Janette Knowlton was born circa 1837 in New York. 7 vi. Oren Knowlton was born circa 1841 in New York. My sources were: Information handwritten by Effie Lunette Knowlton Riley (1935 or afterwards, based on letterhead of stationery), passed on by Claudine Riley Shuey. Records of Bridgewater, State of Vermont: p. 77, Vermont, Bridgewater Town Clerk. FHL 2025248. Though I do have a bit more info I haven't put in the database yet--marriages of Janette and Elmira (from Slattery, Marriages of Malone, New York and Area, 1810-1870), and deaths of Freddy Knowlton (son of Orin) and Elmira (from Slattery, Deaths of Franklin County, New York). Are you interested in info on Seth's siblings and parents?

Actually , the Asenath Willson might just be the one I am looking for also. Found her ancestors recently, and there IS intermingling of family lines between the Knowltons, Willsons, and with the Willson, Mitchell, Thompson lines. It gives one a headache to weed through who married whom, being that relatives married relatives, but they weren't first cousins or anything like that. I am trying to connect all my lines, naturally, and these last resources have really helped. Feel free to email me seperately if you like.

They were children of Thomas Knowlton, b. 31 Mar. 1699 in East Haddam and Susannah Cone, b. 15 Jul. 1708 in East Haddam. I don't know anything about her other than what I've learned about her ancestors, which I'd be happy to share, though there's not a great deal. Interestingly her brother Roswell had a great grandaugter, Asenath Knowlton Willson, b. abt. 1813 in NY. Your other query about an Asenith Willson caught my attention, but this seems to be a different person. As you research the Knowltons, beware of information that goes back to Rev. Stocking's book on the family. He is notoriously inaccurate and even the corrections made later are not always accurate. Primary town and county records on microfilm are available from the LDS Family History Library. They reveal that even some of the transcribed records in the Barbour Collection on the East Haddam families are not accurate. As you work back you'll also find there are some fantasy connections in the Hungerford family, so don't be misled into thinking there's a Mayflower line there.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5Mn.2ACEB/331 Message Board Post: Correction to One World Tree: Lucretia Wolcott Knowlton The information in Ancestry.com's One World Tree for Lucretia Wolcott Knowlton conflicts with direct information from my mother-in-law, who at 95 is still living. Her grandfather was Harrison Howell Dodge, and her grandmother was not Lucretia Wolcott Knowlton, but Lucretia's daughter, Elizabeth Plympton Knowlton. Lucretia had been married to Lincoln B. Knowlton in 1842 and lived with him in Peoria, where they had 4 children that I know of in addition to his daughter Eleanor by a prior marriage. The children were William S., James W., Louisa, and Elizabeth Plympton Knowlton. Elizabeth, born in Jan. 1854, married Harrison Howell Dodge in 1875 and lived with him in Washington, D.C., where he was the superintendent of Mt. Vernon for many years. Elizabeth and Harrison Howell Dodge had four daughters. They named the first Lucretia Wolcott Dodge after Elizabeth's mother, and that Lucretia is my mother-in-law's mother. The second daughter, Anna Howell Dodge, married Elvin Ragvald Heiberg. Both of them had children, on whom I have information. The third daughter was Elizabeth Knowlton Dodge. The fourth daughter was Mary Eleanor Vernon Dodge, who married William Strong Cushing; their daughter Elizabeth married Boris Dmitrievitch Wolkonsky and is also still living here in Southern California at the age of 80. Probably the reason the researcher got confused and thought that Harrison Howell Dodge married Lucretia is because Lucretia, as a widow, lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Washington. There is a directory listing for her in 1890 which gives their address, but it identifies her as the widow of Lincoln B. Knowlton. At that time she would have been about 80; I am not aware that she ever remarried. I think her husband may have died in the Civil War, because I do not find him in censuses after 1840 and 1850. Just wanted to correct this in case it has misled anybody.

Can anyone point me to a good source for the parents of Sarah KNOWLTON who married Barzillai LAMB on 28 Feb. 1734 in Hopkinton, Mass.? C. Stocking's "History and Genealogy of the Knowltons" lists her father as Robert and gives his ancestry, but George Henry Knowlton's "Errata and Addenda to Dr. Stocking's History..." says "Erase Sarah. Cannot place her ... Erase Robert ... died unmarried." Another source says Sarah's fathers name was Daniel but I have not found any information on him. Sources, info, or suggestions appreciated. Hi All, Last week I sent a brief biography of Wisconsin State Supreme Court Justice Wiram Knowlton (1816-1863) to the List. In it I wrote that Wiram had never been married or had children. I based my information on several sources, including family Bible records. So, imagine my surprise when I stumbled across this whilst searching the updated Historical Newspapers Collection at Ancestry.com: DIED. In this village, on Tuesday last, the 9th inst., of Chronic Bronchitis, Candace A. wife of Cap't Wiram Knowlton, and eldest daughter of Bennet Attwood, Esq. of Platteville, Wisconsin, aged 23 years. (Prairie du Chien Patriot, Feb 9, 1847) I was then given this corroboration by Dave Taft, Grant Co. WI historian: From the “Earliest Marriages of Grant County Wisconsin,” compiled by the Grant Co. Genealogical Society: Wiram Knowlton and Miss Candace Atwood, license issued 24 Jun 1842 by L. O. Shrader, Clerk. Married 6 Jul 1842 by Henry W. Reed, Minister at Platteville. Witnesses were James M. Goodhue, George W. Lakins, and Rev. F. T. Mitchell. Filed 18 Jul 1842. Recorded in Grant Co. Book-Sup. A, Pg. 2. So Judge/Justice/Cap't. Wiram Knowlton was married after all. I have still found nothing to indicate he ever had children, and don't think he did. But, who knows what will turn up next? A family tree is certainly a "living document", isn't it?
