This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: KNOWLTON Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.knowlton/501/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, I am the administrator of the Knowlton mailing list, and I invite any of you board readers to join us by subscribing (see the rootsweb.com home page for instructions). Also, these board messages are gatewayed to our list, so we do see them; however, our posts and replies are not seen by you board members unless we log on here. Some of us have been doing Knowlton genealogy for 40 yrs or so; some of us own Rev Stockings HISTORY OF THE KNOWLTONS pub in 1897 and the ERRATA AND ADDENDA published only a few years later. Both volumes are still full of errors. Nowadays with more records available, much more USA Knowlton history is known for the 17th-20th centuries. I want to caution you that there is no documented proof at all for the Richard Knowlton and Elizabeth Cantize info in the Stocking volume. I personally believe this was another family (Knowlden) altogether. At any rate, research done in England a couple of decades ago failed to connect our family with these people--in fact, proved they were not related. We sort of keep old Capt William Knowlton as our founder even though we have no proof of him either. He is a handy way to link John, William, and Deacon Thomas Knowlton of Ipswich, MA; all of us are descended from the first two men. All over the INTERNET is undocumented info about ancestors of the Ipswich people and, worse, embarrassing nonsense about nobility etc. Our people were shoemakers and brickmakers, good yeomen and women who labored in Ipswich to make a living and bring up their families. They are enough for us to be proud of without adding fiction to the story. I hope some of you will join us on the Knowlton mailing list!
this to Kari especially, Do you believe that James and Nancy Agnes Knowlton had a son, Frederick E., as appears on 1860 census with them in Wisconsin? If so, do you have a granddaughter, Agnes M. Knowlton, marrying Joseph Sewell and moving on to Montana? Elizabeth W. Knowlton

Yes, not until after I sent out five batches of 50 people each emails did I realize that compuserve was not even putting my signature in; plus I had lost my email address with them [long long boring story] so you would not even recognize the old one. How clever of you, Linwood! But all of you who want your email address in my address book, please send me a personal email at my new address knowltonew@earthlink.net and I will click it into my address book. Thanks. You can tell it is really I because I am grumpy and giving you instructions. Elizabeth W. To Knowlton Rootsweb list. Caution Knowlton's The latest email asking to change an email address, add the address to your address book, and send an email to that address, was apparently from Elizabeth. However, since the sender did not state their name, it could be anyone looking for email addresses to spam, or phish for information. Sounds suspicious, but I know Elizabeth has been having computer problems. If it was Elizabeth, please resend the email stating you are Elizabeth. Thank you, and be careful out there. I appologize if it was Elizabeth. Linwood Wickett Husband of Nancy (Knowlton) Wickett

Frabjous Day indeed! Slow and steady wins the race. It was indeed I; and will quickly send directly to you the necessary detail as to getting a test kit, etc. etc. Thank you, and again congratulations! carlisle knowlton
Will the kind gentleman who was organizing the Knowlton dna testing please respond to this address. In switching email providers, I have lost his emails and cannot remember his name-- Carlisle Knowlton, was it you? I have gotten my brother to agree to testing! The good thing about aging is that you don't care about what you don't remember and you can't see what you look like any more. :>} Elizabeth W. Knowlton
thank you all for your patience while your list owner is STILL switching computers after nearly three months. No one wants to hear the whole boring story, but I just dread the time I have to do this AGAIN. Anyway, how is the dna testing going? Let the list know. I still don't have email files and addresses in the service I am going to use so am just sending this message to the list and will read your replies there. Thanks a lot for hanging in there. Recently I completed a scholarly article on the descendants of Daniel Knowlton (#459) b ca 1750 and am just waiting to get some sources confirmed [because I did not fully write down each source over the past 15 years as I should have--just a warning] before I send it in to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society Record to see if they will publish it. Has been fun to do regardless. He is a sort of cousin, not an ancestor, more closely related to our Kari from Minneapolis than to me. Elizabeth
My father John M. Knowlton (Jack) was an Armed Guard in the US Navy serving aboard various Merchant Marine ships in WWII. I don't know an aunt named Marion His Father-James A. Knowlton b. Iowa d. IL Grandfather Asaph Knowlton born Canada from that bunch who emigrated to Canada from Mass
I recently got this private note and am passing it on: >Hello: Upon my venture to obtain information about/of Jack Knowlton, I happened upon your letter dated March 02, 1996. Could you please tell me if Jack was a Merchant Marine. If so, I need to speak with you. If not, do you know of, within your family, Jack Knowlton who was a Merchant Marine? If you would or could take the time to reply, I would certainly appreciate it. I do know that Jack also had an aunt named Marion. Even though I only get the long phone cord hooked up every couple of days, I am pleased you all are talking among yourselves and not doing bad things (like with the mccarthy list I administer too) per the teacher having to leave the classroom. I had no idea there had been any Knowlton reunions in over 100 years! Held in Boston in 1896 with over 200 in attendance, it sounded like a fun affair. Nowadays things would be somewhat different. All the officers would not be men, for instance. As a Knowlton from a tiny thin line, knowing no others but my own nuclear family, I would be interested in staring at everyone at least once. :>} I suspect I have aspergers syndrome and that it came down through my father. But, hey, it makes me a great archivist, so I am not complaining. After a great deal of effort, I located a fourth cousin Knowlton and met him once to hand back a family Bible belonging to his branch. But it was not an ongoing relationship since he was not a genealogist. Signing up for the dna test would be a lot cheaper than going to a reunion. No one responded to my plea that those of you with the male stuff join the ongoing project. Would love to hear about those west coast reunions, past and future. I have no skills in that direction but would attend anything I did not have to fly to get to. Elizabeth W. Knowlton
What to talk about? Marcia, If a reunion is planned correctly, we could always talk about the weather, and the great food dishes (pot luck). If it is in New England, bean-hole-beans is a great topic. Oh, of course, we could exchange notes about the inaccuracy of Stocking's Knowlton History. Someone could bring a picture of the infamous William Knowlton. They do sell old pictures on the net that you could attach any name to. And we could ask if any is attempting a new correction to Stocking. Grinnin in New Hampshire. Linwood Wickett, husband of Nancy Knowlton. Nancy is a descendant of Joel Knowlton (#959) (NOT JARED!!!). Joel (#959) married Hannah Guptill, not Hannah G. Upton. He married only once, as far as we can find. Joel (959) (NOT JARED!!!) was a son of Isaiah Knowlton (Stocking 410) Isaiah was the son of William Knowlton and Rachael Anderson, not John or Jonathan. Well, we could get into the "who the hell were Capt. William and Ann" situation! ...Compare our family line's eccentrics (oh, come on! you KNOW they're there!) Anyway, the Knowltons I've met have always been lots of fun and interesting. No problem! I'd like to add my two cents---lets have one in the West. (Preferably in CA) :) Seems all reunions are on the East Coast. How about us out here? Who else is a West Coast Knowlton? Peggy
I am in Oregon. My wife suggested that we might consider having mini reunions in all 50 states and each Canadian province . There does seem to be a considerable number of Knowlton's out there. Hi, all: Although I am several generations removed from being a KNOWLTON, I would be happy to attend a reunion if it were held in New England and the timing worked out. I'd LOVE to go to a Knowlton Family reunion!! Since I'm a stern old bachelor in the Moses Adam Knowlton line (my great grandfather), I'll have to represent that branch of the tree. Of course he now has a ggggrandson through his Son Henry but he's only a few months old. Just let me know when and where, I would love to meet some of my cousins. Bruce ud -- Some day people will grow up and realize that the only thing vile about human bodies is the small minds some people have developed within them." - Dick Hein
Hi Elizabeth, Why not try to get a reunion together? I know there are various small Knowlton reunions, (though Mike and I have not gone) There is one that is done in Colorado. Hey are any of you listers Knowlton's from Colorado? Hope you get your computer problems settled---ours is a mess too Peggy K.
