Accidental death ruling on OAP in bike smash A RETIRED postman died after being hit by a motorcyclist.Frederick Walsh, 79, of Mylis Close, Sydenham, died on September 17 last year, two weeks after the accident. The pensioner, who was leaving St Lawrence's Church, Bromley Road, Catford, at 9.45pm, suffered with angina and sciatica. He had been out dancing that evening with his friend, Gladys King, Southwark Coroner's Court heard on April 21. Mr Walsh's son, John, told the inquest his father suffered from a rare eye condition, called homonoimus hemiopia, which meant he had lost part of his vision. Rider Michael Knibbs told officers at the scene: "I was just coming down the road and saw the gentleman and the lady crossing the road. I applied the brakes but the bike skidded and it hit them. "Mr Walsh was taken to Lewisham Hospital with suspected head injuries as well as fractures to his legs. Pathologist Dr David Rouse gave the cause of death as bronchial pneumonia due to heart disease.PC Gary Lawrence, who conducted the traffic road investigation, said he found both of the front headlamps had been illegally covered with purple covers and the helmet visor was tinted, which was again illegal. He added: "The purple headlamps are considerably dimmer than normal headlamps and they can be obscured by an oncoming car. "Coroner Selena Lynch recorded a verdict of accidental death. 9:43am today
