    2. Thanx for this info which perhaps indicates a greater latitude in looking for John's birth. Is Manitowoc Co far away from where your relatives were living? I ask because the family there originated from England. Jane was born in Kent as RUMNEY. She was married to Charles on Ritchie Thomas's chart and by then the couple in addition to George, William and Anna also had a Charles. Perhaps the two Charles were just away on census night. bfn Alan > Finally -- I have something to add -- but not much. 3. Hi Alan, You've got me thinking a bit now -- Manitowoc is a major ship building area on Lake Michigan. It is all the way across the state from Iowa,Grant and Crawford counties where my relatives are from -- probably 200 to 250 miles 370 or so Kilometers from Platteville to Manitowoc. BUT ... I don't know how they arrived here. Some of my other ancestors came through the Great Lakes and then by train -- maybe they came by boat and then more by boat after falls -- no locks then. It is possible that the Charleses were on the census -- I just looked at the index for this group -- and actually on the index my John was missing -- but his wife and daughters were there and when I got to the actual census, he was there. Did Ritchie's family hang out in the Surry area? I'll keep at it -- I know that marriage license for John and Amelia is somewhere -- I must just not be looking in the right place -- I know where they were married and the date, and I know he was a Methodist Minister -- so it had to be a Methodist ceremony. And when I get back to the SHS I'll look up the census on the Manitowoc Knibbses.
