I received a copy of the Deddington News from October 1991 from my dad's cousin today with a front page feature showing "The Old Trades of Deddington". It's quite an attractive item with graphics of the particular trade together with the names of those individuals who provided that service to Deddington. Sadly, it's not an old document, but designed to look old. Of the 10 traders identified, two of them are KNIBBS. The first is John KNIBBS, a Deddington man born and bred (1807-1901). He married his second cousin Mary Ann KNIBBS and went on to have five children. The graphics shows an old bearded man with a walking stick against which is written "JOHN KNIBBS, TOWN CRIER AND ALE-TASTER". Whilst I was already aware of him being a Town Crier, the job of Ale Tasting is new to me - a pretty good job too if you can get it! Also listed is "RICHARD KNIBBS, SADDLER". I suspect this is John's uncle Richard, the son of Richard KNIBBS/Sarah BIGNELL. Other Traders listed are: Thomas DEELY, Carrier James BANES, Shoemaker T H ("Ticky") WELLS, Drapery Store John SCROGGS, Maltster and Auctioneer Joseph & Samuel MASON, Axle-Tree Makers John Samuel HIRON, Printer, Bookbinder and Stationer Robert & W FRANKLIN, Builders & Woodcarvers John & Thomas FARDON, Clockmakers Some of the above surnames make we want to sidetrack a little and dig into families that married into the KNIBBS line. I know of connections between my KNIBBS line and the families of FRANKLIN, WELLS and FARDON. I will be scanning this article into my PC and sending a copy of it to those sharing my KNIBBS line, but if anyone else would like a copy, please let me know. Don
