    3. 1st August 1886. Yesterday's Inquests and Accidents. Terrible Death on the Railway. Yesterday afternoon, Dr. Diplock held and inquest at High Street, Kensington, on Thomas KNIBBS, a platelayer, aged 30. William Biggs, a platelayer, said that on Thursday afternoon he and the deceased were at work near West Brompton station, on the line of the West London Extension Railway. A train passed, and witness then saw KNIBBS lying in the four-foot. Three parts of his head was off and half his feet. David Leach, gauger of the platelayers, stated when he saw the train he called out to the deceased. Witness only saw the train when it was about 30 yards off, as there was a curve at the spot. James Stanley said he was driver of the train, which was one from |Richmond to Waterloo. Witness could not see deceased until the train was a few yards from him. There was no time to open the engine whistle. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death" and added a rider to the effect that an efficient look-out should be maintained when men were at work near a curve or other specially dangerous spot.
