    1. Database collection
    2. I'm not sure if this is new or if I just now stumbled on it. In any case, http://aad.archives.gov/aad/title_list.jsp is the (US) National Archives "Access to Archival Databases" site. I haven't spent much time with it yet, but would suggest this for this weekend: From the "Subject" pull-down list, select "World War 1939-1945" (last item on the list. Then click on the second item in the list, "World War II Electronic Army Serial Number Merged File, 6/1/2002 - 9/30/2002" On that screen, click the "select" button. This takes you to a screen with two "select" buttons. Click on the first. Now you're finally at the search screen. Type your surname of interest in the name category, and away you go... This is only a list of Army records. I'm not sure if it includes the Army Air Corps. I wonder if they'll do something similar for Navy records? -- *Marsha L. 3. Thomson Gale, who brought you The Times OnLine, have got another Free Trial on offer - this time of their entire 18th Century Collections, and hopefully none will suffer the same access problems which, by the way, were fairly common. It wasn't just people from the KNIBB list who struggled. This collection is different but well worth looking at. There is a quick summary of it's contents at http://www.gale.com/EighteenthCentury/quick.htm Go to http://trials.galegroup.com/ecco/confirm.html and click on "Database Trial" to gain access to the search page. I haven't found anything about KNIBBS bit did find some interesting references to Deddington and Clifton in Oxfordshire from whence my lot came. I note that the first search gives references to documents in the collection and from there it's possible to search for the key words within the document. Don

The online edition will be launched at the Victoria University next Wednesday (June 1st) by Prime Minister Helen Clark. 3. Hi Alan :) I just asked hubby in the hope he would know. He said he's always done it that way (month/day) but he has no idea why. I'm wondering WHEN they started doing it that way in the States, does anyone know? Perhaps after finally getting England out of America, they changed as one last act of defiance? Just my thought! ;D If you think it's hard with genealogy, spare a thought for this little Aussie ... Americans do month/day, Australians do day/month, Germans do day/month. Doesn't sound that confusing, does it? But it IS when you're living in Germany on a US military base and you're Australian. I can keep the Germans happy, but when you're dealing with the military who are living in another country, SOMETIMES they change to suit the country ... grrrrrrrrrrrr!!! I don't write the numbers now on ANY forms, I always put, for example, January 1, 2004. That way EVERYONE knows what I mean!! lol Take care, Rob. 2. Jamaica Observer Reporter Friday, May 28, 2004 National golf trials tee off Dennis Atkinson, ranked first in three Order of Merits for the Jamaica Golf Association's 2003 / 2004 season, heads the list of qualifiers for the National Trials which tee off this weekend at the Cinnamon Hill Golf Club in Montego Bay. Atkinson, who led the men's, seniors and mid-amateur Order of Merit, will be vying with 27 other males for a much-coveted spot on any one of three teams: the Hoerman Cup (men), Ramon Baez Figueroa (men 35 and over) and the Francis & Steele Perkins (men 50-59). This year's trials are organised to provide the maximum challenge for the competitors who will be seeking to represent Jamaica in the 2004 Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships (CAGC) and are scheduled for two very different layouts. Cinnamon Hill, with its undulating fairways and greens, many of which are protected by numerous bunkers, will not easily give up any birdies and pars and the field may have to make up ground in the final two rounds, scheduled for June 5th & 6th, on the more forgiving and open Caymanas golf course. The line-up for the teams includes Owen Samuda, Jason Garbutt, Paul Thompson, Philip Prendergast, Hansel Williams, Gifford Wilmot, Wayne Chai Chong, Michael Gleichman, Hamar Dayes and Radcliff Knibbs. The two spots for the superseniors Higgs and Higgs team will be up for grabs among Cleo Taylor, Maurice Foster, Herman McDonald, Gordon Hutchinson, William Telling and Ossie Lee. Former junior representative Lisandra Brown heads the list of ladies for the George Teale trophy team. This is Brown's first year on the ladies' Order of Merit, and after six tournaments was ahead of her fellow competitors by 800 points at the end of the season. Also in the ladies' field are Darnley Thomas, Barbara Sampson, Michiko Asonuma, Tiffany Terrier, Yvonne Munn and former top lady Jodi Barrow who had three wins from three events. The 2004 CAGC will be held from August 1-8 in the Bahamas at the Lucayan Country Club.

    2. Valerie Well found and thank you for thinking of us. I can't pin Thomas down but if Elizabeth is the one who was buried at Deddington in 1792 then, if 28, we could expect Thomas to have been born around the same time ie c1764 There are a couple of possibilities but difficult to prove on the info currently to hand. I haven't viewed the Will but if anyone likely to be related does so, then I'd gladly follow up on any further clues given there. bfn Alan Alan Jackson Host at The K/NIBB/S One Name Study & Mailing List Website address http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~knibbetc Did you know? 2. Help Design The Car Of The Future (27 May 04) The University of Oxford is heading the SPRINTCar project, in which a group of academic institutions, research and industrial companies are joining together to help create "the shape, architecture and function of future road vehicles". There are three phases to the programme, the first of them being a six-month consultation period before the parties involved get down to Phase Two and Phase Three, proceeding via detailed design work to a full-scale prototype. The other partners are Oxford Brookes University and its counterparts at Sussex, Cranfield and Swansea, plus MIRA at Nuneaton, the Foresight Vehicle combine, Warwick Manufacturing Group, Menard, TWI, Knibb and Gormezano. In the first phase, they're looking for contributions from members of the public with ideas on future design. There's a questionnaire on www.sprintcar.org.uk.

    1. Commander Mark KNIBBS in the news again
    2. Piracy-fight frigate home By Angela KNIGHT in 'This is Hertfordshire' HMS ST ALBANS returned to Portsmouth Naval Base on Friday, May 21, after a six-month Campaign Against International Terrorism (Cait), fighting smuggling and piracy in the Gulf. The Royal Navy's newest frigate was joined by warships from the United States, France, Germany, Spain and Italy collectively known as Task Force 150 in policing the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. One of their key tasks was to check that passing ships were correctly registered and not engaged in any crimes such as smuggling people, drugs or contraband. The crew on board the type 23 frigate questioned 807 merchant vessels, 31 of which were intercepted as being suspicious, but nothing illegal was found. One of the small vessels boarded contained 34 people, including women and children. There was little sanitation. After being given some water, they were let go. Another boat contained 1,500 goats, although the herd proved to be legal cargo bound for Saudi Arabia. Commander Mark Knibbs, HMS St Albans commanding officer, said: "We acted as the command platform for Task Force 150 for two months the first time a type 23 frigate has been used in such a role. "And there is no doubt the force's presence had a tangible effect in reducing piracy and other facets of illegal maritime activity. "The men and women on board have risen to every challenge and task with professionalism and determination and I am proud of our successes and achievements." After the ship had clocked up 12,000 miles, the 200-strong crew aboard HMS St Albans enjoyed a ten-day break in the Seychelles, one of the most romantic destinations in the world. Set in the heart of the Indian Ocean, 1,000 miles from Africa, this archipelago of more than 100 islands was a resting point for the crew while the ship underwent rigorous maintenance and engineering checks. In all, HMS St Albans travelled 38,519 miles on patrol, before handing over duties earlier this month to HMS Cumberland. On the way home she paid a goodwill visit to the Maltese capital Valletta, which coincided with Malta's entry into the European Union. The crew enjoyed two days of celebrations, including fireworks, in the Grand Harbour.

    3. This came from a book called 'The Churchill Chronicles' written by by Major General T.B. L. Churchill and outlining the history of the Oxfordshire Churchill line (not the one connected with Winston Churchill). There is a considerable amount of information about Elizabeth Churchill's family in the book but nothing further about Thomas Knibbs. Elizabeth's father was from the Deddington branch of Churchills. This is his will which can be seen online on the PRO site: Will of Thomas Churchill, Butcher of Saint George Hanover Square, Middlesex 19 October 1781 PROB 11/1082 which may give some further information about his daughter.
