    3. I just came across a site showing some listings from Wagstaff's new catalogue of rare old books, for 1780. Amongst the books listed there is one called "Knibbs Dissenting Psalm Tunes Set to Music". It was on sale for 1 shilling and 6 pence. It was also listed in the next years catalogue so either there were lots of them around or no-one bought it the first time round. Don

    2. Hello Tony I have an aunt Betty (Betsy or Bet) Knibb in my tree, born 1909, Dorridge Warwickshire, died 1998, Boscombe Hants. Unfortunately this is not the Betty Knibb you are seeking but, because of geographical proximity and near dates, I give this info so you don't waste time searching this line in case you come across it elsewhere. Incidentally, like your ancestor, my aunt Betty was also a very kind, it must go with the name!! Robin

    3. Hi Tony :) Yes, we ARE lovely, aren't we? ;D I think Alan's tied up at Wimbledon this week from memory, so I'm going to jump in here since I'm online and you've just posted. If you can give us some more details about your Grandmother, I'm sure you'll find you're connected to someone on the list. I'm from the Tasmanian Nibbs line so I'm not, but perhaps Don is? Sorry Don, I can't remember where all your family come from (having a blonde week) but you can go take a look at Don's site Tony ... http://knibbs.family.users.btopenworld.com/index.htm ... that's a good place to start anyway! :D I'm sure someone else will contact you if they have Betsy in their tree, and welcome to the family!! :D Take care, Rob. 1. It never rains but ...
    2. ...it better not pour tomorrow because we're at Wimbledon. In search of any K/NIBB/S from Derbyshire? Well not there but I wonder if either of the sportsmen mentioned recently are descendants of one family I've just linked together. Please remind me John, who did we find last year from your Northants family within a Derbyshire branch of KNIBBS? An Edith born c1901, I was told, was a Tiller girl who married and died young. Well I've sussed that she was Agnes Edith born 04qtr1903 Wolstanton District, distant from where the rest of the family were born, both before and after that date. Interestingly, a Thomas Norman KNIBBS was also born in the same District and it was his roots that I was researching, prompted by another genesreunited contact. He also fits neatly into the gap alongside Agnes Edith, so the Northants/Derbyshire tree has grown somewhat in size as there are a fair number of descendants of Thomas. And can we 'place' the following from a recent Australian newspaper report: "PROCESS and Control Engineering’s inaugural PACE Zenith Awards 2004 initiative has surpassed all expectations, both in terms of the quality of the competition and the high calibre of attendees at the awards ceremony, which was held in Sydney on 2 June. Present: Jeremy Knibbs, Chief Executive Officer of Reed Business Information" He could well be husband of a Margaret Louisa who I have within the database. Any claimants? We won't be seeing 'Bat Boy' at Wimbledon, notwithstanding the name. We saw him last night on stage in Leeds in the way-out musical from America. Wow! Then we came home to watch a recording of 'wonder boy' ROONEY scoring another two goals in Euro 2004 - that's a football competition for the benefit of overseas listers. England are through to the quarter finals and now play hosts Portugal. It's all happening. bfn Alan Alan Jackson Host at The K/NIBB/S One Name Study & Mailing List Website address http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~knibbetc Did you know? No, unfortunately first name not given but a Google search shows a Sue KNIBBS at Duffield tennis club. I suppose it could be her or her husband/son/daughter because the report didn't say whether mes or ladies though like you I assumed mens. As for Jon KNIBB, Alex thinks could be Jon KNIBBS. We'll have to get them on board to arrange a K/NIBB/S mini Olympics or Euro 2008, though with Alex now across the pond, perhaps that ought to be World 2008. bfn Alan

    1. Grandma's Family Tree
    2. Don Knibbs
    3. There's been a change in Grandma, we've noticed her of late, She's reading history or jotting down some date. She's tracking back the family, we'll all have pedigrees. Oh, Grandma's got a hobby, she's climbing Family Trees. Poor Grandpa does the cooking and now, or so he states, That worst of all, he has to wash the cups and Dinner plates. Grandma can't be bothered, she's busy as a bee, Compiling Genealogy, for the Family Tree. She has no time to baby-sit, the curtains are a fright. No buttons left on Grandad's shirt, the flower bed's a sight. She's given up her club work, the serials on TV, The only thing she does nowadays is climb the Family Tree. She goes down to the Courthouse and studies ancient lore, We know more about our forebears than we ever knew before. The books are old and dusty, they make poor Grandma sneeze, A minor irritation when you're climbing Family Trees. The mail is all for Grandma,it comes from near and far, Last week she got the proof she needs to join the DAR. A worthwhile avocation, to that we all agree, A monumental project, to climb the Family Tree. Now some folks came from Scotland and some from Galway Bay, Some were French as pastry, some German, all the way. Some went on West to stake their claim. Some stayed near by the sea. Grandma hopes to find them all as she climbs the Family Tree. She wanders through the graveyard in search of date or name, The rich, the poor, the in-between, all sleeping there the same. She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze, That blows above the Fathers of all our Family Trees. There were pioneers and patriots mixed in our kith and kin, Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and thin. But none more staunch than Grandma, whose eyes light up with glee, Each times she finds a missing branch for the Family Tree. Their skills were wide and varied, from Carpenter to Cook, And one (Alas) the record shows was hopelessly a crook. Blacksmith, weaver, farmer, judge, some tutored for a fee. Long lost in time, now all recorded on the Family Tree. To some it's just a hobby, to Grandma it's much more, She knows the joys and heartaches of those who went before. They loved, they lost, they laughed, they wept, and now for you and me, They live again in spirit, around the Family Tree. At last she's nearly finished and we are each exposed. Life will be the same again, this we supposed ! Grandma will cook and sew, serve cookies with our tea. We'll all be fat, just as before that wretched Family Tree. Sad to relate, The Preacher called and visited for a spell, We talked about the Gospel, and other things as well, The heathen folk, the poor- and then- 'twas fate, it had to be, Somehow the conversation turned to Grandma and the Family Tree. We tried to change the subject, we talked of everything, But then in Grandma's voice we heard that old familiar ring. She told him all about the past and soon was plain to see, The Preacher, too, was nearly snared by Grandma and the Family Tree. He never knew his Grandpa, his mother's name was ..Clark? He and Grandma talked and talked, outside it grew quite dark. We'd hoped our fears were groundless, but just like some disease, Grandma's become an addict--- She's hooked on Family Trees. Our souls were filled with sorrow, our hearts sank with dismay, Our ears could scarce believe the words we heard our Grandma say, "It sure is a lucky thing that you have come to me, I know exactly how it's done, I'll climb your Family Tree. Author Unknown.

    1. Arthur KNIBB
    2. How wrong can I be? I had placed Arthur KNIBB below with a family from Leamington (exFenny Compton) who had moved to Manchester - Chorlton and Salford Districts. Then I found that father Tom had married his Amy 'Amelia' LLOYD in 02qtr1867 not seemingly 01qtr1865 as first supposed - hurrah for Freebmd! This put me on notice that Arthur born 02qtr1867may not be Tom's, hanky panky notwithstanding. But if not Tom's, who was his father? Now I had recorded his birth as at Stretford (a part of Manchester) and then it dawned on me to check if there was a Stretford District, only to find that there wasn't. (I had misread Michael's handwriting on his K/NIBB/S GRO extracted birth entries). Clearly as confirmed by Freebmd, he was born in the Stratford upon Avon District. Veritably a bard's tale this. Checking the database, I found I had another Arthur KNIBB from the 1901 census with the right credentials. He was married with a family at Lancaster, having married first in Salford. Naturally that had me questioning whether I had been right after all. However, I had a note that his 1881 census entry gave him as with his widowed mother Mary Ann, not Amelia. Mary Ann who? Her birth in Welford, Gloucs gave me no clues. Who else was born in the Stratford District around the time of Arthur. There was an Eliza KNIBB 1862 but I hadn't 'placed' her. So next, what about Stratford marriages pre 1867? I hit upon John KNIBB 01 qtr 1867 who, from the IGI, I had as marrying Mary Ann BOYCE. Apologies to Don here because I had allocated this marriage to his John KNIBBS born in Snitterfield, Stratford District 01qtr1840. Apart from the giveaway S, I noticed that the family had moved to Oxfordshire when he was young, so I shouldn't have ever 'placed' Mary Ann BOYCE with him. Find John KNIBB but how? Well, for starters, born c 1820 to match Mary Ann's age? Luck came into play here. Looking for Mary Ann originally, I hit upon Mary Ann SMITH who had married a Thomas KNIBB in Stratford upon Avon 25th Nov 1866. The father of Thomas, one of eight children, was a John KNIBB who had married Elizabeth JACKSON - her eponymous family are listed in the Shakepeare papers no less. He was a tailor journeyman from Ely Street, Stratford (1851 census) who lived until 1877. I had tentatively allocated an 1859 death for Elizabeth but I had no way of knowing it was her as the indices of the period don't give her age and the burial isn't on the NBI. It could equally have been her granddaughter Elizabeth's death. Well, no other Johns coming to the fore, I decided to check the 1881 census entry for Arthur and Mary Ann KNIBB at familysearch.org - quicker than loading up my CD Rom version. I had only previously worked on the microflimed photocopy of the Warwickshire KNIBB/S entries supplied to me years ago by Robin. What should I find at the household entry but Mary Ann with children named BOYCE and son Arthur KNIBB. So she was not born a BOYCE but married one then married a KNIBB. And where were they living? Ely Street! QED! See revised extracts from the database below. Lucky for some who now have Arthur in their tree (if verified to their satisfaction) but not for the genesreunited contact, Geoff KNIBB, who set this ball rolling by causing me to compare his updated data with my own. Have you got such a tale to tell listers? Or a doubtful K/NIBB/S ancestor of your own, who you'd like me to check out? bfn Alan EXTRACTS FROM K/NIBB/S DATABASE - 17th June 2004 E&OE John KNIBB Born c1810 Stockton Baptised 29Apr1810 Leek Wooton Died 1Qtr1877 Stratford District aged 77 Buried Occupation Tailor Journeyman Ely St Stratford Father Richard KNIBB Mother Sarah WOODFIELD Married (1) 2Mar1835 Stratford on Avon Warwicks Elizabeth JACKSON - 8 children already known to you. 3. Alan, I now have copies of all the certificates that Diane has. It shows Ellen was indeed registered as Ellen DRINKWATER. She was born on 20 Aug 1852 at Wootton, the daughter of Robert DRINKWATER and Leah DRINKWATER (formerly FRANKLIN). However, her marriage certificate has her as Helen DRINKWATER. She married William KNIBBS on 16 August 1879. William's trade was given at that time as Glover. Their daughter Sarah Ann was born on 11 Sep 1879 at Woodstock, so pretty soon after the wedding.. William gave his occupation at that time as Glove Ironer. Sarah Ann KNIBBS' husband Alfred LONGWORTH was born on 2 Dec 1877 at 16 Culvert St, Manchester, England. He was the son of William LONGWORTH (a Plumber by trade) and his wife Emily LONGWORTH (formerly GAYTHORP) Sarah Ann KNIBBS and Alfred LONGWORTH had a daughter Elsie Maud LONGWORTH who was born on 9 May 1905 in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. Alfred gave his occupation as Mechanical Engineer. Elsie Maude was the mother of Diane Shartland who shared all of this information with me. 3. I have mixed findings for Ellen/Helen. She's named as Helen Drinkwater in the transcript of Marriages from Woodstock so I suspect that is where we both got it from. The 1881 Census has her as Ellen Knibbs and the 1901 census has her as Helen. The 1891 census has her as Sarah Ann which I believe is a total transcription error as that was the name of their older daughter. Diane was quick to point out it should be Ellen so I'm sure she has strong evidence - I've asked her anyway. Checking through my records I see the closest connection we have on the KNIBB list with Diane Sharland who is descended from William and Ellen KNIBBS are Trevor Knibbs from Combe, Claire Graham, and Cathy Cliff. Trevor and Claire are 3rd cousins. Their g.grandfathers were brothers to Diane's g.grandfather in Woodstock. Cathy is a half third cousin. Cathy's g.g.grandfather John Knibbs from Woodstock married twice. Cathy is descended from Ann KNIBBS, a daughter from his first marriage. Diane is descended from William KNIBBS, a son from his second marriage.
