I guess that explains why my inbox has been so quiet lately. I hadn't thought to check the helpdesk; just figured everybody was out celebrating the long holiday weekend instead of inside doing genealogy. The helpdesk (http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/) indicates a server is still down, though KNIBB mail seems to be coming through now. I received a separate e-mail from the "Mailer Daemon" indicating that a message I sent couldn't be posted because it had been queued for five days. So, if messages don't show up, perhaps they can be resurrected from the mailer's "sent" boxes & resent. Meanwhile, here comes another weekend. I think it was Bob KNIBBS who discovered a George KNIBBS who had served in the Indian army. Then Don found his marriage at http://users.rootsweb.com/~indwgw/Bengal/BM7496K.htm His son Charles G was born there and duly shows up on the 1901 census at Woolwich as born in India. The entry also confirmed that the family came from Cookham. Well, I'm glad to say I've now found at genesreunited one of his descendants who has just joined us on the mailing list. Welcome Kerryann! I was able to verify the connection with her grandfather, Charles G KNIBBS jnr, and acquaint her of his background. She in turn has given me full details of her family many of whom were born in Basingstoke ie Don's neck of the woods but a completely different family - well no connection post 1811. Next I hope to report a new found connection for Bob. From South Devon Herald Express - Torquay, England, UK SCOUTS JOIN IN BIG SLEEP RECORD BID BY NAOMI TOLLEY 11:00 - 07 July 2004 Dozens of Cubs and Scouts from Torbay slept out in Watcombe in an attempt to smash a world record. The First Aid Giant Sleepover event saw more than 130 Torbay youngsters camping out for two nights on Easterfield Lane. The aim was to raise crucial funds for their group while learning essential first aid skills. Everyone who took part in the event gained their first response badge. The Torbay Scouts spent two evenings around a huge campfire and Gaynor Knibbs, from Sainsbury's at The Willows, Torquay, joined them to draw a raffle. I note that there is no mention of the family of my great-great-grandmother Hannah Haynes NIBBS born 1817 at Kidderminster, daughter of William NIBBS b.c.1773 and his wife Sarah b.1791. Hannah's siblings were William b.c.1807, Sarah b.c.1808, and Mary Ann b.c.1819. Has any lister any information as to what became of the family after leaving Kidderminster? Alan Your analysis demonstrates that, thanks to you, Don and ......., great strides have been with the 19th/20th Century K/Nibb/s family trees: there will now follow a steady growth with increased connections stimulated by the web site/s and the established data base. For me the great challenge, the unattainable Holy Grail, is the linkage of the earlier trees. I recall you have already undertaken geographical analyses but is there any mileage to be gained from a (post-Wimbledon/Euro 2004) pursuit of the total population of pre-1700 K/Nibb/s? Can we just list them- not worrying about connections at this stage- every pre-1700 waif and stray. How many would there be? What geographical clusters? The areas where there are none? None because there are none? Or because no research has been done there? Can the call, therefore, go out for any pre 1700 K/Nibb/s, ticking off the Record Offices that have been scoured and those still to do? No urgency- just a separate and discreet mission, where this head count can be enjoyed and celebrated. A waste of effort? Already undertaken? John Knibbs

Peter's posting as above (relevant extract copied below) set me pondering about William KNIBBS born Somerton. As Don has confirmed, he wasn't baptised there c1804 according to the Parish Register, nor can I find him in a nearby parish. Interestingly though there was a William and Mary with family at Lower Heyford and I have recorded him, from somewhere, as a boatman. Now I may have confused him with the William from Brierley Hill or could he be the same man in which case the dates/ages given are awry?
