1. [K/NIBB/S] Thursday 18th October ....
2. ....... a day for taking stock. Or stocktaking? Richard KNIBBS (who loaned us his 'World Book of KNIBBSES' for display at Warwick) has written to me with an idea as follows:- ''Just a thought. How about starting an internal library. By this I mean that everyone says what parish registers thay have etc. This is held by say yourself, or on the one name page. Then if I needed to know anything about, say Oxford, I could look into the library list. See, say Don has submitted a list with Oxford on it. Then all I need to do is contact Don. Of course if it were held centrally it would make life easier.'' Of course, I already include on the website a 'dossier' of the items that I have available. Perhaps, we could include a separate section there of any additional items held by others eg Don's several microfiche of Parish Registers and Bob has some copy Wills. If listers could mention what they have in a message to all, I will be happy to amend and update the website as a permanent record. Does anyone by chance have a London Street Directory dated c1891? Guess not but I've asked my 'book finder' to see if he can get me one. I think this might be the way of making the best use of the 1891 London Census recently added to the dossier. Working in the gas industry, I learned, to my surprise, that on average 10% of customers (Marsha please note the expression!) move each year. That also seems to have been the norm a century ago as I've only found a few K/NIBB/S living at their same address in 1891 as 1881. I've used some addresses from Wills to find a few more but the vast majority have not been traced. Of those that have, there are a couple of items of interest to report. 1. Henry Theodore KNIBBS senior came from Somerset and not London as stated in 1881. His tree which was fragmented now, thanks to the 1891 census, boasts 50 or so names but not yet linked to any researcher. 2. Mary Jane KNIBB first came to my knowledge via John KNIBBS extracts of a Northampton parish register. The published National Probate Calendar (later typed out by Robin) revealed she left a Will on her death in 1911 and that she lived in a posh address in Whitehall. Michael PEARMAN obtained further details for me but she hadn't left the fortune that I had, perhaps optimistically, imagined. The 1881 census listed her as a housekeeper to an MP. In 1891, she is at the same address but then housekeeper to the Duke of Buccleuch. Rose-Marie, is that the closest your tree gets to royal stock? 3. Armed with that piece of knowledge, I eagerly looked for Ann Elizabeth KNIBB, widow of Peckham House, Peckham, Surrey whose Estate was administered by her son Tom Fitzpatrick KNIBB. Sad to say, I found that she ended her days in a lunatic asylum. No names, no pack drill, re current researchers of that line. Now, on Sunday I spoke for a second time on the telephone to Margaret BOWMAN who rang me from Portsmouth. She had contacted me following a recent advertisement I had placed in the 'Family Tree Magazine'. Although her KNIBB connection is quite remote, she has accumulated a large collection of K/NIBB/S and K/NOBB/S. I had previously rejected the latter but some of her finds suggest that I should keep an open mind. Her family links are to Northampton/Stoke Goldington but her researches have extended as far as to Leicester and Stamford. So unrelated researchers Sioux and Audrey might be able to hob KNOB it with the best of them. Full details awaited from Margaret, bless her, not as old as mother but no spring chicken. I'd better not directly use a 'stock' analogy to the next item. Our stock has, however, gone up in the eyes of a KNIBB working for Cameron MACKINTOSH - usually deals in his stocks and shares. He was impressed with the website but what I really need him to do is to persuade the impresario to back 'KNIBB, the Musical', if not personally then through his Foundation. I won't be satisfied with a stock answer to my enquiry. Enough, I hear you say, or we'll all go round the bend, looking for Edwins in Tavistock or some place else, bridge-building in Bradford PA, ending up in a body stocking in some asylum. bfn Alan List Administrator and host at THE K/NIBB/S ONE NAME STUDY website Did you know? 2. Alan Unfortunately I have not obtained any Cert's for this branch as there did not appear to be a direct attachement to my line . I will of course review any info I have and try to connect if possible. I was at one stage considering the link between Richard Knibbs and Sarah Bignell who lived in deddington and then moved to Steeple Barton . m.1789 . Through to to London via William b. 1777. But Don had him documented elsewhere. Regards BOB K

1. [K/NIBB/S] KNIBBS Obits. from New York
2. Don Knibbs
3. James KNIBBS below is the 2xg.grandfather of Ana Knibbs-Rizzo from New York. Ana is also the g.grand-niece of Royal B KNIBBS, listed further down. Don KNIBBS, James. The funeral of James Knibbs, late superintend of the Fire alarm telegraph system, was held this afternoon from the family residence of 34 Grand St.,Rev. R.D. Williamson of the United Presbyterian Church officiating. The obsequies were largely attended, delegations from the Masonic bodies, The Odd Fellows and the Fire department .being present. The Read steamer Company presented a facsimile of it's badge and appropriate pieces sent by Athenian Lodge and the Encampment. In addition to these pieces there were numerous floral tributes from many friends. The Empire Male Quartet, including Ben Franklin, Ed Humphrey, Fred C. Comstock and James Laing sang at the house and at the grave. At the residence the selections were " Lead Kindly Light" and, "Apide With Me," At the grave the quartet sang in th Masonic burial service " O Solemn Strikes the Funeral Chapel and " My heavenly Home" The Bearers were Frank C. The Masonic burial service was conducted at the grave in Oakwood cemetery under the direction of Mr. Master Anaon R. Thompson. Delegations from the Masonic and Odd Fellows bodies and from the companies of the fire department were present at the grave. The members of the Araba Read steamer Company, of which the deceased was an organizer and it's first engineer attend the funeral. At a meeting of the company last evening a committee was named to draft revolutions of respect. The captains of the fire Department met and decided to send delegations from each company to the funeral. (from The Troy Times, April 17, 1901. Submitted by an unnamed contributor). KNIBBS, James. James Knibbs, Superintendent of the Troy (NY) fire alarm system and for many years engineer of the Arba Read Steamer Company in that city, died at his home there yesterday. He was stricken with paralysis a few days ago. Mr. Knibbs was born in England in 1828 and came to this country in 1840. He was twice married, his second wife surviving him. His only son died several years ago. Mr. Knibbs was very prominent in Masonic and Odd fellows circles, but was best known throughout the country by his invention of what is known as the "Knibbs Run Around" This is an attachment to steam fire engines which prevents a waste of water and saves the hose and suction pipes" The Run Around "was utilized almost everywhere, and by the advice of counsel he brought suits against many municipalities. Many of the latter settled for large sums, but the City of New York defended the action. Recently a verdict was given in the United states court for nearly $1,000,000 in the favor of the persons to whom Mr. Knibbs assigned his invention. One of these is ex-collector of customs Thomas Murphy of New York. (from The New York Times, April 17,1901. Submitted by an unnamed contributor). NOTE: There is one inaccurate part to this. He had a second son named William H. alive at the time of his death. KNIBBS, Royal B. Died on the 19th Royal B., youngest son of Ja's & Rhoda A. Knibbs, age 1 year & 2 mths, funeral today at 3:00pm from the residence of it's parents 47 Grand Division St. (from The Troy NY Daily Whig, Aug. 20, 1857, 2.6. Submitted by an unnamed contributor). KNIBBS, Royal B. Lines suggested by the death of the infant son of Ja's & Rhoda A, Harvey. Dear Parents, wipe away your flowing tears Suppress each rising sigh, And then, by faith, behold me here, Beyond the bright blue sky. In the dear savior's loving arms Reclining on his breast You little one, from sorrow free Shall here securely rest I'm sure you would not wish me back an heir to sin & pain When I am free from every care, And with my savior reign. But you dear parents, you will, come, Your little one to see; Look forward, then, with cheerful hope, for soon you follow me But a few fleeting years at most, Before your summons will come; And then we'll meet, to part no more In our eternal home. I was not sent to the earth to dwell And toil, & weep, and sigh But only lent you for awhile, To lure you to the sky The little bud you loved so well Just bursting into bloom, " Was sent to show how sweet a flow'r In Paradise would bloom." August 21st, C.D.J (from TheTroy NY Daily Whig, August 24, 1857, 2.5. Submitted by an unnamed contributor).

2. Don Seeing these reminded me of something Graham NIBBS sent to me a while back - see below. Extracted by him some years ago from a commercial offering but I think its OK to pass on for our private study. It's enough to drive anyone round the bend trying to fit them all together. I once came across a Bend in Oregon but in true American fashion the streets were laid out on a grid system and as I recall the main road was as long and straight as any I've ever seen going through a town. bfn Alan > Fort Bend, TX 1850 Federal Census > > Nibbs Ann B. 38 F North Carolina > Nibbs Mary L. 18 F Alabama > Nibbs Austin 5 M Alabama > Nibbs May 85 F South Carolina > Nibbs William 22 M Alabama > Nibbs Lucinda 20 F Texas > > > William Nibbs 1800 Abbevilee,Abbeville District, So.Carolina William Nibbs 1820 Boston Ward 7, Suffolk County, Ma William Nibbs 1820 Abbeville Cpunty, So. 1. [K/NIBB/S] Edwins galore
2. Don/Bob et al Can anyone link these two trees? Note in particular the Edwins who all seem, from census info, to be related to drink, if not to each other! Both families stem from Oxfordshire, pass through London and end up in Christchurch - via the US :-) Do you have certificates for any of them, Bob? I'm having doubts about Francis being born c1767 unless he indeed married a previous time where possibly the connection is to be found. There is though a later Francis baptised at Deddington who might fit more happily with the 1818 marriage. What became of the other anyway? 3. I've just looked at the ship's manifest and see that on arrival at New York, Francis said that he was "Touring & Looking" so it maybe that he didn't emigrate but was just on holiday. Other interesting snippets about Francis are that this was his first time in the US, he was 5' 9" tall, with a very fair complexion, fair hair and grey eyes. Don

3. Bob, I was checking data on the Ellis Island Web Site last night and came across a Knibbs that maybe of interest to you. Francis KNIBBS, from London, England arrived at Ellis Island on August 15, 1912. His age on arrival was 37 years 5 months, and he was single at the time. He travelled to America on a ship named Olympic which sailed from Southampton. I wonder if perhaps this is Francis, the son of Francis Edward KNIBBS and Amelia Unknown from East London? As you identified from the 1881 census, this Francis would have been born in 1875 which is spot on. Don
