Cathy. George J. Knibbs and Anna Knibbs of the Wisconsin 1860 Census were brother and sister to my great grandfather, Charles Cordon Knibbs, whose father was Charles Knibbs. I don't know who Jane and William Knibbs were. >From Two Rivers, Wisconsin they went to Verona, Grundy County, Illinois. Ritchie Thomas
Hi Alan, You've got me thinking a bit now -- Manitowoc is a major ship building area on Lake Michigan. It is all the way across the state from Iowa,Grant and Crawford counties where my relatives are from -- probably 200 to 250 miles 370 or so Kilometers from Platteville to Manitowoc. BUT ... I don't know how they arrived here. Some of my other ancestors came through the Great Lakes and then by train -- maybe they came by boat and then more by boat after falls -- no locks then. It is possible that the Charleses were on the census -- I just looked at the index for this group -- and actually on the index my John was missing -- but his wife and daughters were there and when I got to the actual census, he was there. Did Ritchie's family hang out in the Surry area? I'll keep at it -- I know that marriage license for John and Amelia is somewhere -- I must just not be looking in the right place -- I know where they were married and the date, and I know he was a Methodist Minister -- so it had to be a Methodist ceremony. And when I get back to the SHS I'll look up the census on the Manitowoc Knibbses. Thanx for this info which perhaps indicates a greater latitude in looking for John's birth. Is Manitowoc Co far away from where your relatives were living? I ask because the family there originated from England. Jane was born in Kent as RUMNEY. She was married to Charles on Ritchie Thomas's chart and by then the couple in addition to George, William and Anna also had a Charles. Perhaps the two Charles were just away on census night. bfn Alan > Finally -- I have something to add -- but not much. Finally -- I have something to add -- but not much. I just returned from 7 1/2 hours of looking at microfilm and old books at the Wisconsin State Historical Society. I still haven't located the marriage record of John Knibbs (in case you don't remember, John is the brother of Ann Knibbs Brashier -- my gggrandmother and their father was also John Knibbs)-- so I don't have much more information about him...but the census indices were helpful: No Knibbs in the 1850 census index. In the 1860 WI Census for Dodgeville, Iowa County, WI John Knibbs -- age 34, minister Methodist Church, $1,000 worth of land and $250 in personal property, born in England Amelia Knibbs -- age 23, born in Illinois Mary Catherine -- age 1, born in WI and in the1870 Census for Platteville, Grant County, WI found: John Knibbs -- age 42, ME Minister, no land, $400 personal property, born in England, both parents foreign born (interesting that Rev. Knibbs aged only 8 years in the past 10 -- and lost all his real estate.) Amelia Knibbs -- Age 32, housekeeper, born in Illinois of non-foreign parents Katie Knibbs -- age 11, born in WI Nettie Knibbs -- age 7, born in WI ( have oral history from my mother's cousin that my g-grandmother Alice Amelia Brashier McCartney Frye -- used to correspond with Nettie -- or Nellie Knibbs in North Dakota.) Hattie Knibbs -- age 1, born in WI I also found some Knibbs in the Wisconsin 1860 Census index that I do not have a connection to that I can find... Anna Knibbs -- Village of Two Rivers, Manitowoc County George J. Knibbs -- Village of Two Rivers, Manitowoc County Jane Knibbs -- Village of Two Rivers, Manitowoc County William Knibbs -- Village of Two Rivers, Manitowoc County I'm sorry, but I had so many other things to look up that I forgot to go to the 1860 Manitowoc County Census to get the rest of the information on them -- next time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Anybody got anything K/NIBB/S to report? > > Alan >
Nothing much to report I'm afraid but nevertheless, plenty to say! I made a new contact today. I heard from Marlene Everett Hawkins who is another of the New York clan - Ana Knibbs-Rizzo's cousin. Marlene's mum was Sylvia Knibbs from New York. Marlene would like me to add her family to my tree (which of course I'm more than happy to do) and hopefully, Marlene will be able to fill in some of the missing dates in the data that Ana has already given me. If it carries on this way, I'll have more entries for New York than I have for Oxfordshire! I'm sure that Ana or Marlene won't mind me passing this on, but Marlene's sister Kathy is married to Robert Gleeson. If you go to http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyKey=66365&category=C it's an article in the Timesunion Newspaper about Robert Gleeson and his dog Ruger's involvement in the rescue of fire-fighters at Ground Zero of the World Trade Centre. It includes an interview with Robert and a photo of him with Ruger. Also, for anyone who maybe interested, I've posted a few more South African and New York Knibbs on my web page, courtesy of Natascha and Ana. These can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~knibbs/. Hover over the Photo Galleries icon on the index page and then click onto New York KNIBBS or South African KNIBBS to view them. The New York ones go back to James Knibbs, the inventor of the Knibbs Runaround which was a device that controlled the pumping of water on fire engines. He was born at Somerton, Oxfordshire but emigrated to New York in about 1840 with his family when he was about 13 years old. Other new ones include Ana's grandparents Harold James Knibbs and his wife Pearl Nancy Palmatier, plus Harold James' sister Bertha. The South African ones go back to James Arthur Clement Knibbs who is the grandfather of Graham Hartlett, Natascha's husband. This photo shows James and members of the next two generation, some of whom Natascha is still trying to find details. If you go to my web page to look at the photos, whilst there, please have a look at the new Chronology of Events listed on the Index page. It's a new feature that I've just got hold of and I think it's quite good - it gives a chronological list of all events taken from a GEDCOM file. It's brand new and has a few minor bugs that the creator is working on. He is also working on a new version which will provide a Chronology of Events indexed by place names (again taken from a GEDCOM file). It'll give a complete index of every place entered in the GEDCOM file, with a list of every event that took place there. Best of all, it's FreeWare! Sorry, but run out of steam now so will close for the night. Don

Just a quick message to the list to say that in addition to the Warwick Photo's, I've now added a couple of pictures of "KNIBBS" who share the same line as me, but couldn't attend the Warwick gathering. One of the benefits of Warwick was being able to put faces to e-mail address, so here's a couple more. If you go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~knibbs/Photos/NYKnibbs.htm you can see Ana Knibbs-Rizzo, her mum Ana Modesta, dad William Harold and two children Matthew and Adriana, plus her brother Harold and his two children William and Candice. If you go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~knibbs/Photos/SAKnibbs.htm you can see Natascha Hartlett, her husband Graham and their eldest son, also Graham. Don
There's a new online death index for New Mexico http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nm/nmdi.htm The site has info on how to obtain copies of death certificates. No obvious K/NIBB/S, but someone might find other relatives... -- *Marsha L. I have the standard ancestry.com membership with the (US) census addition. The census will be considerably more useful when they post the indices. At the moment it's a line by line, page by page search. The image of the census page doesn't fit well with any monitor I've tried it on, so there's a lot of redrawing to try to read the text. I'll look up the standard stuff for people, but I think I'd need some detail (at least identify the township) on the census records. -- *Marsha L. It's the 'Old Crocks Race' on Sunday so we're off to view it from Mother's refurbished balcony which overlooks the route. Well, it's not a race but our name for the London/Brighton Veteran Car Run. Before I go, I've one or two things to pass on. I've taken ancestry.com up on a 14 day free trial of their predominantly US data and found a fair few new K/NIBB/S as well as more details re known ones. I've written off-list to interested 'family'. Within 24 hours of writing to 6 complete strangers, I had answers back from all of them! One in Canada was able to supply the parents names of William Alfred KNIBBS who died in WW1 and is commemorated on our Roll of Honour. They were Thomas and Caroline nee GOODWIN. In the same post, I received a list of KNIBBS who died in Ontario from a researcher who is kindly helping me with original settlers there. A Caroline was on it and doubtless one and the same. Another was in reply to a find re a Deborah KNIBBS marrying William WELCHMAN at the British Embassy in Paris. In this case, I've been given the name of someone who has researched that family in depth so am hoping to make progress. If a mindblowing theory of mine is proved to be correct, I will be writing to several of you re a connection to this couple - and the previous item no less. Yet another referred me to the website which displays the 1870 Michigan census re details of Henry KNIBBS and family there, 'Libbie' having married into his family. Henry subsequently remarried so I thought I'd use the site to search for his bride to be. I thought I'd found her but for her age which doesn't agree with her being mother of the children allocated to the second marriage. But then was Henry really 72 when tha last of them was born? Yet to prove/disprove. By the way, we're still linked to the first item, theory-wise that is. Number 4 has referred me to her father who can hopefully confirm a Claude's stepfather's first name whose KNIBBS surname became his by choice. Now I have confirmation he was a Henry and am following up his mother's details. >From KNIBBS to KNIBB. Does this mean anything to anyone? From the American Genealogical Biographical Index re Isaiah KNIBB - Boardman gen, Eng. Anc. of Sam. Boreman, Wethersfield [et. al.] By Charlotte Goldthwaite. Hartford, Ct, 1895. (13, 778p.):128 The BOREMAN family website regret they can't help me. There is obviously a book by Charlotte GOLDTHWAITE listing families (with perhaps some family trees) and this could be of great interest as Isaiah is a descendant of the clockmakers. I was impressed with the detail in the Connecticut death records. From information there, the USSSDI and a couple of directories, I've put together a provisional chart for some KNIBBS of great longevity. Trouble is, I don't know where they came from nor anyone currently researching this line but with help from those willing ancestry.com contributors, perhaps it won't be long before I'm reporting a success story. Oh yes, another award as come the way of the website and is reported on What's New/Latest page along with details of a couple of new helpers whom I've already mentioned on list. Is anyone else subscribing to Ancestry.com and does their subscription extend to the census and/or UK data? I'd be glad to know if they think it's worthwhile. And remember last week when I mentioned K/NIBB/S who'd subscribed to books and were listed in Directories? - they are at Ancestry.com HXR323? That's the number plate of 'Genevieve' the eponymous car of the old film with Larry ADLER's mouth organ playing the soundtrack. With facts like these to hand, perhaps I should set a trivia quiz, starting with whose autobiography was entitled 'It ain't necessarily so'. Answer herein and in today's Daily Telegraph! bfn Alan List Administrator and host at <A HREF="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~knibbetc/">THE K/NIBB/S ONE NAME STUDY website</A> Did you know? Quite by chance today, I came across the burial for Dinah WAITE at Swerford, Oxfordshire. Dinah was the third of four children from Joseph KNIBBS of Swerford and Elizabeth WEBB. Dinah was baptised in 1846/1847. Although I can find no sign of her baptism in the PR transcripts, I believed she was baptised at Swerford. Her older and younger siblings were all baptised there. I know from the Swerford PR transcript that Dinah KNIBBS married James WAITE at Swerford on 12 October 1864 when Dinah is listed as being just 18 years old. I was checking the Swerford PR transcript again today and sadly, I found that Dinah was buried at Swerford on 20 Mar 1869, aged just 23 years. Don

Sioux Richard has already informed me that the lady is Margaret Bowman, 12, Walden Rd, Stamshaw, Portsmouth, Hants PO2 8PJ - who has relatives from Stoke Goldington and Chacombe, N'hants She is in fact the lady whose letter was waiting for me on return from Warwick and who had seen my Family Tree Magazne advert. As I wrote to you at the time, her 2x great grandfather's daughter by his second marriage married Bartholomew Thomas KNIBB who I have on your chart as a son of James and Hannah BODILY. So the connection is remote but she has collected some KNIBB items which she is sharing with me eg some census extracts, marriages etc in Bucks/Northants. Nothing new for you there I'm afraid. Write by all means but I didn't want you to think she is a brand new contact. However a descendant of Shadrach KNIBB contacted me yesterday and we are just putting together his tree which I'll pass on with his permission asap. bfn Alann
