The following passage is from "Dictionary of Culprits and Criminals" by George C. Kohn, The Scarecrow Press, Inc., Metuchen, N.J., & London, 1986. "KNAPP, Joseph (c. 1770-1830). Massachusetts murderer. On the night of April 6, 1830, Joseph, his brother John, and Richard Crowinshield clubbed and stabbed retired sea captain Joseph White to death. They had conspired to rob the captain of his hoarded money. Crowinshield, already having a bad reputation, was questioned and put in jail. A fellow prisoner, after learining of the crime from Crowinshield, wrote a letter to extort money from the Knapp brothers. The police seized the letter and arrested the Knapps. Joseph confessed and was promised immunity if he testified against the others. Crowinshield hanged himself in his cell, and John was found guilty and hanged without his brother's testimony. Daniel Webster, the prosecutor, said Joseph had consequently lost his immunity because he failed to testify against his brohter. Joseph was tried, convicted, and hanged, despite a public outcry against his conviction, termed "vindictive" by many." (See p. 203). Query: Of what line of descent are the brothers Knapp, Joseph and John? Does anyone know the names of their parents and siblings? -Stephen ***************************************************************************** Stephen Emery Researching my ancestors University of Louisville Family names: Emery, Garris, Hektor, Louis D.
